I'm sure the whole police force is laughing at us tonight!

DS 18 months grabbed my cellphone off the counter and was running around with it with us trying to grab him. My company makes us have passwords on our devices, so it therefore has an option to make an emergency phone call from the first screen. Even though it gives you several chances to NOT make an emergency call, DS managed to hit all the buttons in sequence and it dialed 911.

The operator hears "grab him - he's got my phone! Quick, he's going to throw it!" DS throws the phone as we grab him and is laughing/screaming hysterically. (Smashing sound. Disconnect.).

A minute later the phone rings. It's 911. They ask who they're speaking to, my name, address, my location, whether it's my phone. They say they received a call and heard arguing, then a disconnect. Is everything alright? Yes, my toddler got the phone, so sorry, etc. He asks me my phone number and I'm so nervous I say it wrong 2 TIMES! He asks me again if I'm alright. He says he hears crying (DS still shrieking with excitement). I tell him again everything's fine. We finally hang up.

I jokingly say to DH, great, now the police are probably going to come. I no sooner get the words out when the doorbell rings! It IS the police! He asks if he can come in. We're all in the family room like deer in headlights. He says they are following up on the 911 call. We explain again that DS got the phone. He's casually chatting with us, checking the house out, he chats with DS11. He engages DS 18mos, tells us he has a 16 month old, he asks if we have other kids, if anyone else is in the house. Talks about the Wonderpets, which were on the familyroom TV, tells us the song is permanently in his head. Asks what we're having for dinner. Finally, after about 10 minutes, I guess he determined that everything really was OK, said good night, happy holidays, and I showed him out. As I was closing the door, I notice another officer on the front walk, and another car with ANOTHER officer at the street.

They were unmarked cars, but still, our neighbors' tongues must be going a mile a minute tonight.

On one hand, I am so glad for the fast response and followup, but on the other hand - urrgh, I'm still cringing!:headache:

PSA of the night - your toddler's arms are longer than you think!

LOL.. I'm not sure if I should think - "Nice! They're really on top of things.." - or - "Slow night.. Might as well take a ride"..:rotfl:

It happens..:santa:

Nothing for you to be embarrased about! It was mistake thats all.
Also be glad that the police did respond in the manner it did in following up :)

   When I read this in the mouseover preview, I thought I was going to be able to say, "Don't worry. I'm sure this happens a lot. It's routine. At least, they didn't have to send the police over."

 Not so routine after all. :lmao:

DS17 called 911 from my sister's house when we were there for Christmas when he was 3--we didn't know it until the phone rang and 911 called and told us they got a nice phone call from a little kid wishing them Merry Christmas, but they still had to call and check if everything was okv:scared1::lmao:

I guess you could look at this as a positive--your police responded quickly, professionally & made sure you were alright. I wouldn't worry too much, I'm sure that sort of stuff happens.

These things happen, I'm glad your police response time is almost instant! No need to be embarrassed.

I think it's good they're so on top of things. If the dispatcher thought it was a domestic disturbance and a wife or child called to report abuse and then got scared, good for them for sending someone anyway. I know in your case it was a total waste of time, but I'm sure they've gone to houses and caught abusers that way.

:lmao: Been there, done that! When my DD was 5, she called 911 while I was in the shower. I had no idea. Apparently she left the phone on and the police tried calling back but couldn't get through. So, they came to our house to check! My DH answered the door and yells up stairs to me, did I call 911. I'm shocked and say that I didn't. Then my DD says she did, just to see if it worked. I heard the police chuckling and then DD tells them that she actually called 911-5 so it was ok, it wasn't really 911! Boy did they laugh after that. They told her (and us) that if you dial 911, any other numbers dialed after it don't count!:lmao: Talk about mortifying.

My DD did that when she was a baby. I don't remember how old exactly but definitely under 2. I didn't know she had done anything until a policeman showed up at my door. I had to let him in and he checked out the entire house, just to make sure we were OK and not being threatened.

OK, I did not technically, legally HAVE to let him in, but....

Boy was I embarrassed.

We used to have a key fob for our house alarm system and DH had it on his keychain. He had it in his pocket while giving DD a bath (she was around 2) and apparently managed to trigger the silent panic button to alert the alarm company. He had no idea until the police showed up at the door and wanted to make sure everything was ok. Not his best moment, but at least they were understanding about it; they said it happened more often than you'd think.

They come out for all 911 calls, I know because my ds also did that too :rolleyes1
We were visiting my Grandmother and she had the phone in her bedroom on a nightstand and my ds picked it up and pressed the emergency pre-set button. I went into the room and found the reciever and spoke to the dispatcher and told her it was a mistake, then we went outside. A police car showed up moments later to make sure everything was okay. It was embarrassing and I felt so bad for wasting their time. My Grandmother keeps her phone up on her chest of drawers now

Yeah - that's small potatoes - I win the acidental 911 award!!!!

I was watching my DS and my niece at my Dsis house. They were about 18 months at the time. Her Hubby was a police officer, who was working nights. He had just gotten off work and had gone to bed. I decided to jump in the shower, the kids were watching cartoons in the next room. Then next thing I know Sis's DH was cursing up a storm and I heard more sirens than I had ever heard in my life. Niece had somehow gotten ahold of his police radio and had pushed the "Officer Down" button!! Every police officer in the entire county was currently enroute to the house. Sis's DH had called the station and reported the false alarm, and I felt like a heel.

We have a winner, folks! :lmao: Though I know it was not funny at the time.

Yeah! I can laugh :lmao:....... NOW!

Yeah! I can laugh :lmao:....... NOW!

You definitely eclipsed my story. Now hopefully, you live in central NJ, and right now at the station house, all the cops are going "yeah, tonight was funny, but remember that time that kid pushed the officer down button?!"

It's been good to hear I'm not alone!

Ahh.. I didn't mean to steal your thunder! I promise, the cops are still laughing about your story ;)

Don't be embarrassed. I used to work as a police dispatcher in my town and it happened EVERY night. And yes, a unit had to be sent as a follow-up...and no, none of the officers ever laughed. Well, maybe they laughed with empathy, because many of them were parents and their own kids had done the same thing at some point...

You're not the first and you certainly aren't the last, believe me! :goodvibes

Some firemen came to my kids school last May to teach them the "stop drop and roll" and how to call 911 etc.

That night, when the oven opened up, the chicken wings let off some smoke and BANG, off went the fire alarm. As I was getting the ladder to wave the smoke away, the kids went in their room to get away from the noise.

A minute or two later i walk in their room to find one of my 5 year old twins on the phone. She called 911 when she smelled the smoke and heard the smoke alarm. I got the phone from her, and could already hear the sirens coming. The urgency was because when the 911 operator asked to talk to Mommy, Jessica said "Mommy's dead". Mommy had died of cancer a couple years earlier, but the poor operator thought it was due to the fire.

Luckily the operator and firemen weren't angry at all. It was the same fire crew that went to the kids school that day.
