I'm sure the whole police force is laughing at us tonight!
DS 18 months grabbed my cellphone off the counter and was running around with it with us trying to grab him. My company makes us have passwords on our devices, so it therefore has an option to make an emergency phone call from the first screen. Even though it gives you several chances to NOT make an emergency call, DS managed to hit all the buttons in sequence and it dialed 911.
The operator hears "grab him - he's got my phone! Quick, he's going to throw it!" DS throws the phone as we grab him and is laughing/screaming hysterically. (Smashing sound. Disconnect.).
A minute later the phone rings. It's 911. They ask who they're speaking to, my name, address, my location, whether it's my phone. They say they received a call and heard arguing, then a disconnect. Is everything alright? Yes, my toddler got the phone, so sorry, etc. He asks me my phone number and I'm so nervous I say it wrong 2 TIMES! He asks me again if I'm alright. He says he hears crying (DS still shrieking with excitement). I tell him again everything's fine. We finally hang up.
I jokingly say to DH, great, now the police are probably going to come. I no sooner get the words out when the doorbell rings! It IS the police! He asks if he can come in. We're all in the family room like deer in headlights. He says they are following up on the 911 call. We explain again that DS got the phone. He's casually chatting with us, checking the house out, he chats with DS11. He engages DS 18mos, tells us he has a 16 month old, he asks if we have other kids, if anyone else is in the house. Talks about the Wonderpets, which were on the familyroom TV, tells us the song is permanently in his head. Asks what we're having for dinner. Finally, after about 10 minutes, I guess he determined that everything really was OK, said good night, happy holidays, and I showed him out. As I was closing the door, I notice another officer on the front walk, and another car with ANOTHER officer at the street.
They were unmarked cars, but still, our neighbors' tongues must be going a mile a minute tonight.
On one hand, I am so glad for the fast response and followup, but on the other hand - urrgh, I'm still cringing!
PSA of the night - your toddler's arms are longer than you think!
