I have AT&T and don't mind it so much (except they told me my new iphone would take 5 days to get to the store and it's been over a week), but I know lot's of people prefer Verizon and have avoided getting the Iphone because they wanted to avoid AT&T.

I hope so. I HATE AT&T and my son wants an Iphone BAD. I refuse to get one until they change carriers.

If I'm not mistaken, the current iPhone (or any previous generations) will not work on Verizon because they're on 2 different types of networks, and the iPhone's only built to be on whatever type AT&T (and T-Mobile, and various overseas carriers) is on. So even if you are able to unlock, it's not usable on Verizon.

And as for the iPhone 4, it's a moot point at present because neither the jailbreak nor unlock has been released yet. (So says the nerd who's been sitting here checking Twitter every 10 minutes for possible updates from the Dev Team saying the JB is out and done. I can't WAIT for it. :thumbsup2 )

Have you checked out the Droids? They're a great alternative.

That was the alternative I told him about. My sister has the dreaded Iphone and she swears up and down there's nothing like it and has reeled my son in. :sad2:

Take him to check it out. It really is a great phone. I bet once he sees all it can do he'd be sold.

You are correct. You can jail break an iPhone to put it on any compatible GSM network but since Verizon is CDMA you will have to both jail break the phone and also open it up and install a CDMA chipset.

Good luck with that.

As of the July the 30th, you will be able to purchase 100% Unlocked legitimate iphones from the Candian Apple stores for $659 Can.

These will work with any technology that supports an IPhone. just place the new sim card.

I suspect the border to be busy..

Of course, there is also the soon to be released unlock/jailbreak as well.. Hopefully with this latest news, Apple will just give up on the effort to lock and jail the phones at the source globally (as they had to in Canada).

I have an iphone and use to have verizon. we switched for the iphone. if you look into Droids the best out there is the droid incredible. if we were still with verizon that is what we wuold get.

And as a PP mentioned you won't be able to use the current iphone on verizon because verizon is a CDMA network and at &t is a GSM network. the iphone is built to work with the GSM network.

I have the Motorola Droid. I'm very happy with it and does everything I need it to do. It has the slide out keyboard too, which I had to have, but now I never use it. I got very use to the touch typing.

My plan is to just wait until early next year when the Verizon iphones are supposed to hit the shelves.

I have T-Mobile and a Blackberry and hate the blackberry. I wanted the iPhone but thought you had to have AT&T for it. Am I wrong?

The iPhone won't be able to use Verizon, period. Verizon uses a different type of network that does not use sim cards and is not compatible with any sim card phone, which includes the iPhone. Also, there is a big different between jailbreaking and unlocking a phone. Jailbreaking doesn't mean you can use it on any network, it just allows you to fully use the iphones capabilities. unlocking, which allows for use on any network (that supports sim cards) is not illegal per se since you technically own the phone, but breaches ATT's contract with Apple and could brick the phone (which would basically kill it, and make it useless).

The reality is, ATT has a contract with Apple. So Apple is within its rights to put in some kind of safety measure in the iphone to not allow other networks to use the phone. Even if you buy the iphone off of ebay, you still have to abide by the contract between apple and att.
