So Confused!!!

After renting points on our recent vacation, we decided that DVC was right for us and bought 160 AKV points while we were there (WDW). We closed on Nov. 3 and have a June use year.

So...we have 160 pts now and will get another 160 June 08, right? We are not going back to WDW until October of 2008, so I was thinking I need to get busy and bank and also start booking at our 11 month window. Hopefully my thinking is right so far.

We'd also like to spend a weekend at Hilton Head early spring or summer. So, should I bank all my points from 2007, then?? Or, do I need to save some "out" for our HHI weekend?

I thought I understood everything. I did a lot of research prior to buying and read so much on these boards, but in practice, it can get so confusing, lol!

You are correct in that you should have your 160 - 2007 points and since your banking deadline is 11/30, then you do need to plan now on how many points to bank...but...

If you plan on using some of your 2007 points for a spring 2008 HH trip, then you don't need to bank all of your 160 points, which means you could wait until after 11/30 if you are still unsure about how much you want to bank. The 6 month banking deadline is only for banking 100% of your points..you need to check on the banking rules for banking less than 100% of your points.

You really need to do your homework to see how many points you will need for the HH trip AND contact Member Services to book the reservations so you know you can use the points. Then you will know how many points you have left and how many you need to bank.

If 11/30 is approaching and your still do not know about your spring HH plans, another option is to bank all of your 2007 points into 2008 and then if you need points to use for the spring HH trip, you can borrow from your 2008 point allocation. This procedure can cause problems down the road on the usage of the banked 2007 points or if you have to cancel the HH trip, but thats for another thread....it goes on and on and on.....

If you have a June Use Year, the points must be used before May 31 of the following year unless you bank them.

You might want to verify that you do have AKV points from June, 2007 since that was before the resort was open - but if you do have current points and want to make a reservation for a date prior to June 1, 2008 you may use those current points. If you will travel to HH after June 1 then you will need to bank your current points anyway.

If you have already banked points from the current Use Year and later find that you want to make a reservation for dates in the current Use Year (any date prior to June 1, 2008 is in your current Use Year), then you can just borrow points from the next Use Year to make that reservation since banked points caanot be un-banked.

If you do borrow points from the next Use Year and later cancel that reservation, the borrowed points used will be returned to the current Use Year but would still expire on May 31, 2008 since they cannot be banked and cannot be returned to their original Use Year.

Hopefully, this answers your question without muddying the waters too much!

June 1 is beginning of your use year. Points you have now from June 1, 2007, expire May 31, 2008. You must use them for a trip that is completed by that date OR bank them. If you bank them they will be good for any trip from June 1, 2008 to May 31, 2009. You can reserve any trip 11 months out at home resort, 7 at others. Thus:

1. For any October next year trip you can call during November this year to reserve for home resort, when in November just depends on when you are going in October.

2. This years points can be used for that trip only if banked first, which you can do on the same call you make this month to reserve time in October 08.

3. A June use year currently has until end of this November this year to bank all points, and in December you can still bank up to 50%. However, all banking rules change effective January 1, 2008. You will then have up until end of eighth month in use year to bank any or all of your points, meaning come January you will still be able to bank all points during the month of January 2008. However, you may want to bank them this month anyway particularly if you are calling this month to make an October 08 ressie.

4. If you want to go to HH for spring or summer next year, what points you use really depends on when you go. If before June 1, 2008, you could use points from this use year as long as they are not banked or borrow points from next use year if you have none left from this one. If after May 31, 2008, you would still have to bank this year's points to use them for that trip.

5. If you want HH for June or earlier next year, you can make that call during November this year because it is in the 7 month window.

6. A main issue is whether you will be able to get HH for spring or early summer because those are highly popular times there and thus you should be calling this month for a time if you have not yet reserved.

Yes you will have 2007 points we are a March UY and got our AKV 2007 points

Thanks for all the help. I think I've got it!!

I'm going to call MS now and see what they have at HH. We are very flexible with the dates, so I hope we can find something.
