I did not come to work Monday because I had a nasty stomach bug. I also had this the first week in January and had to miss a day. My supervisor - who is also my friend - commented that no one else she knows gets this stomach bug as much as we do. (and I need to mention, when one of us gets it, everyone in the house ends up with it, no matter how much I sanitize and spray Lysol). And how it is strange that we dont pass it on to the people we work with, or the kids friends.

Well...the reason I dont pass it on to coworkers is because I stay home! And I keep the kids home from school when they have it!

She never gets sick. So she doesn't understand.

I am soooo tempted the next time I get this, to come to work anyway, and lick my fingers and touch everything, including her doorknob! Of course, I wouldnt really do that!! The thought did creep into my head though :crazy2:

Am I really deranged or what!??

No just frustrated and I can see why...

I'd come in...puke on her desk and then go home.

She is your boss. I'm sure she in a tough spot as well. I'm sure she didni't want to come down on you, however that is part of her job. That why it's so hard to be friend with the boss.

I feel for ya...my DS10 comes down with EVERYTHING. He's always sick. Last week he had the stomach virus, and this past weekend he came down with a bad cold. Kid can't catch a break. I've had friends comment about it...almost making me feel like they think I don't take care of him or something:confused3 Sometimes things come across the wrong way and the person saying it doesn't even realize.

I hope you are all healthy again!!

This is why I never ever ever become friends with anyone on my staff. You would say things to a friend that you would not say to an employee.

I would never say this to an employee until they had exceeded their paid time off benefits. At that point, then yes, there would be a conversation but it wouldn't be done in the way this one was done.

I don't think it's difficult be friends with the boss. I think your friend was being rude. I hope you did defend yourself and ask if she really thought you were the type of person to fake ill to avoid a day of work. She should know you better. I think she handled the situation poorly and I would be frustrated too.

If she feels that you're missing too many days of work then that's something that can be discussed in your review or on the side, but she shouldn't have implied that you were faking sick.

I'd be frustrated too. When my kids were little i would keep them home from school when they were ill. Send them back in ad they were sick again. One of the administrators commented that my son was out a lot and that hurt their metrics. I told her that I was well awaare of the time he was home and that because I volunteered in the classroom I was also aware of the kids who came in sick, drooling and sneezing and whatever else all over everything. I told her that my poor kid could never catch a break because other parents sent their kids in while I kept my own home but that I would be happy to send him in the next time he had the bug and let other people deal with the aftermath.. I never heard another thing after that.

I did assure her that I wasn't lying. I haven't missed hardly any days. Thats what frustrates me. I have plenty of sick time left.

Many years ago I had a boss who did not believe me when I called in sick. He told me if I did not show up for work, I would be fired (at this point I had worked there for 18 months and had never called in sick). I dragged my butt out of bed, took a taxi to work (too sick to drive) and spent like 4 hours basically sleeping at my desk. Still sick I showed up for the rest of the week for fear of being fired.

The next week, we had a BIG visit from the home office, and no one was in the office. Including one person who was in the hospital suffering a complication of the flu (probably because of me). The same boss who threatened to fire me told the executive visiting that everyone was ill because I was inconsiderate and came to work sick.

The executive took it upon himself to have a talk with me about responsibility. I explained that I did call in sick but was threatened with termination if I did not show up. My boss denied it, and the executive did not believe me either........until I told him I had the message to prove it. Now back in the stone ages of answering machines when your phone rang and you picked up the machine kept recording.......so I had a record of everything my boss said. Needless to say my boss was fired--turns out this was not the first complaint the home office received about his "sick policy".

Agreed - at my previous job we were allowed 3 sick "incidents" per year (an incident was missed time of any duration not resulting in short term disability), then we had to be written up. Anything past 4 could be cause for dismissal.

Come down on her for what? Getting the flu? I'm assuming the OP had sick days to take. If she didn't take them, everyone would be complaining.

I have worked jobs that didn't have sick time. I was told come to work or quit. There are many many many jobs out there that don't have sick time.

I feel your pain. My kids were both always healthy as horses until about a year ago. It started last Feb. when all four of us came down with the flu. Omg, we have never been that sick. The kids were off for Pres. Day (this was exactly one year ago) so that helped but even with a four day weekend, they each missed three other days of school. Sent dd back too soon, she relapsed and missed another few days. Then all winter long last year into spring she got sick. Each month for the rest of the school year, she was sick a day or two. Then in August, both of my kids got swine flu.

I got so much crap! My sister kept saying "Zach never got sick". That was her kid. In her mind my kids had somehow turned defective on me and were just puny, ill littlel mites that clearly weren't as strong as her son. I no longer even mention to her if I have a sick kid because I know I"ll have to listen to her surmise about why my kids are so weak and puny.

A good friend mentioned "your house looks so clean, hubby and I are just suprised they get sick so much and wonder if you need to really clean deeper". So now my house looks clean but is in fact a germ factory!

Right here on the dis if I mention my dd is sick again, I get this "man you guys are sick all the time, do you take vitamins?" from a few. Nope, I don't let my kids take vitamins and if I did I am sure they'd be fine all the time! Sheesh why did I not think of that already? They just need Flinstone chewables and all will be fine. Oh wait, they take vitamins. Hmm, guess that isn't it anymore than my flithy house.

It gets old. But yeah, I feel your pain because now any little thing that comes down the pike, dd gets and in spite of her being healthy for the first 12 years of her life, its all about how unhealthy she is now by some people's mindset!

If you have decent insurance, I'd go in when any of you get sick and you miss work and get a doctor's excuse to show your boss/friend.

Or go in and barf all over the place and then take your leave and leave her to clean up the evidence that you are indeed sick!

But this isn't one of them. She states she has lots of sick time and rarely uses it.

I'm a boss. I don't give the staff a hard time if they're ill. Yes, I may have to pitch in and cover their work but that's my job.

Unfortunately, I'm the one who is sick today. Actually, I've been sick with a sinus infection for about a month. I'll start to feel better one day and then the next day, I'm worse. I've missed about 50 hours work since January. My boss, bless her heart, asked me if I wanted to go home at 10:30 this morning and I was feeling badly enough to take her up on it. I've worked there for 8 years--she knows I'm not one to abuse sick leave. And it's back to the doctor for me tomorrow.

I think your "friend" was a little catty they way she spoke to you. She should know you better than that.

I am an office manager and I have worked for some horrible office managers. I swore if I ever got in a management position I would not be like them and I am not. We get PTO time which we can take for anything including sick time. I have two assistants and if one of them even thinks she is sick I tell her to stay home. As a result they never come to work sick and they never abuse it. They know they would be so far behind in their work if they did so they only call in sick if they are really sick or have a sick child.
