Snowboarding/Skiing Disers - Help me - Please!

I have a 15 year old snowboarding son who was unlucky enough to be born into a Disney going family He wants to go somewhere with "real" mountians (which are sorely lacking in IL) to snowboard. I said that I would take him next winter, but I have no idea where to go?

These are the parameters that I can think of so far

1.A place that is not too far from a major airport.
- I don't want to have to drive 5 hours just to get to the resort.

2. Safe
- It will be just the two of us.

3. Fun for snowboarding
- But not too hard for a novice.

4. Something - anything for a snow/cold hater to do

5. Not too expensive
- gotta save the money for the "real" vacations to Disney

Any help that you can gice would be great!
