The amount of snow will vary based on location, how quickly it falls, and if there's any ice. It will take a LOT more snow to cancel flights in/out of Chicago Midway than it would take in Orlando (yes, I know it doesn't snow much there, just an example). If there's a storm expected, I'd look 2-3 days ahead.

^^ I agree and with the way many airlines operate using hub airports, the plane originally scheduled to be your flight could be delayed/cancelled due to inclement weather in a city not related to your travel plans. There is no general way to answer what you are asking. A major weather event in some area of the country could disrupt many other flights.

Original message posted in wrong Southwest thread, by mistake.

granted this was years ago but our daughters and their baton group got snowed out of a flight in Orlando because their plane was snowed out in another city. no plane no flight even if no storm where you are

Yea, my point was more that some airports have equipment to handle more snow than others, but yes, if your plane can't get to your departure airport, there could be problems.

I like using flightaware.com. You can look up your flight (airline & flight number), then click "where is my plane now". I feel SO much better when I see "my" plane taking off from the previous airport.

I agree BUT don't use this information as reason to get to the airport late. A few months ago SW sent me a txt regarding a new, late departure time. This was consistent with flightaware. My departure time changed again, close to my original time. The plane was "stolen" from a different flight.

I’ve experienced this with many southwest flights

they seem to do this more than most airlines. I assume because they fly basically the same aircraft VHS many different ones flown by other airlines. Easier to swap them around without changing seat numbers
