Snow anyone?

It takes a couple FEET of snow before we get a snowday. Our kids have had one snow day in 4 years (in Minnesota). We just got 9" on Friday and have had off and on flurries ever since.

Question from the girl who hasn't lived in anything that could be mistaken for "cold" in decades....

How do y'all do that?

I get that if you didn't, it would not bode well for the communities as you would constantly be off...

But how do they keep up with it to keep school in session?

And I interrupt this program for an educational moment. :lmao:

Minnesota in the lovely United States - the entire state - is farther north than Southern Ontario (Toronto's area), Canada! Along with many other states and parts of states. popcorn:: Just sharin'.

Wow golfgal that must have been quite the storm.

Just what I was going to say..

I know we got off for the blizzard in 1991, and I know I got one day in high school...

But other than that...in the cities, they never cancel school for snow. My BFF is a teacher in southwestern MN and they cancel easier since most of the kids come from very rural places where the plows don't get to quick enough...

LOTS OF PLOWING! You just do it I think. Kind of like those in Hurricane areas. Life goes on. We shop, walk, work, etc. Our buses (school) just go right through it. Basically anything over 4 1/2 feet or so, then school is a no go. Especially if it snows consistently all night. But even then, we have sometimes not been canceled.

Plows going by now. WOHOO, first time all day, and boy are we in need.

I remember my first snow day--Willow Grove, PA in 3rd grade--3 feet of snow. I was so excited b/c my parents were military and never got a day off like that. Our road which was off of a main road--wasn't plowed for the longest time.

OMG. Torontonians do not call in the army. Psychotic ;) little tiny hairy mayors call in the army. :rotfl2: ;)

I just got back from my looky. It's unbelievable. I'll take some pictures tomorrow morning. Collingwood is getting blasted. Blue Mountain is in pure glee.

So true, it was that idiot mayor. The only reason I really remember is because it was not long after our Ice Storm 98 ( I think) and the army was called in to rescue us, as our city was on day 17. NOT so fond memories of that.

Yes, I had a looky too. My son was shoveling for the 4th time, and honestly I don't know why, lol. You could not even tell.

I will be nervous until DH gets home. He is "supposed" to finish at 11. I say 'supposed', because he works at the airport, and the pics there are :scared1:

Easy, we have proper snow removal equipment. In a big storm you will see one plow for each lane of the road going down the road taking care of the snow. The freeways/highways are constantly being plowed during a storm. Our city plows had all our roads done by 9:00 Saturday morning-but could have had them done earlier but since it wasn't a work/school day didn't start plowing until about 7:00.

Yes, I know that and no, it wasn't much of a storm, just a pretty typical snowfall in MN, a "storm" would have been high winds, blizzard conditions and a couple feet of snow :lmao:. This was a "get your sleds and lets go" type of snowfall.

Just what I was going to say..

We lived in SW MN for many years and would have a couple snow days/year because it took a while to get the country roads plowed. There would be days that only the kids in town would go to school. The main issue out in SW MN is that the wind blows so much that visibility was so bad and the drifts would get so bad. I remember one day I went out to Walmart (just on the outskirts of town) and driving through town was just fine but as soon as I hit the intersection to cross the highway it was total whiteout conditions-couldn't even see the stoplights.

So in all we have 2 to 4 feet, MORE coming :scared1:, and school is on!

School bus was 30 min late, but it came for my daughter. My son is on public transport, so we will see how it goes for him. I never would have gotten him there, even with my 4x4.

A real mess outside naturally. 100 cars have gone off the road in highways already as of 7am. We are lucky, parts of Ontario have 4x what we have, and more coming.

How much do you have and you are expecting 4 more FEET or inches???:scared1:

We have anywhere from 2 to 4 feet on the ground. Depending on what side of the street you live on, lol. HUGE drifts, surely you get me. :).

I don't believe them anymore. At first yesterday they said 2cms. :rolleyes1 . From 2am to 7am, 13 to 20 fell, with the worst before that.

They now say 5cm to come. As I stated, I don't believe anything right now. Time will tell. I hope they are right, but at this point

Is it possible that you are confusing inches and feet? I checked the weather forecasts for Montreal because I wanted to see pictures of the massive snowfall. 4 CM's is equal to 1.5 inches, there are 12 inches in a foot so a foot of snow would be about 30 CM's. If you have 4 feet on the ground already and expecting another 4 feet, that would mean that snow would be piled up past your first story windows. That much snow anywhere would be headlines.

No confusion except NOT 4 more feet coming. They say only 5cms. That we have, as I said 2 to 4 feet, depending on what side you are not. I would wait for some pictures. They will come.

If you read this, you can see it is not accurate. They amounts of snow are different, lol http://www.montrealgazette.com/news/Montreal+digs+from+25cm+storm/3936399/story.html

I think this will be updated again throughout the day. With more pictures.

Ok, so 25 cm's is equal to about 10" of snow. Drifts aren't indicative of how much snow actually fell. When the wind is right, we get a drift across our driveway that is about 3 feet high, but will only have about 6" of total snowfall, but that doesn't make getting around any easier-the drifts are the bad part of any snowstorm because you come across them so suddenly and it's easy to get stuck in them.

True, but more than that is on the ground, and if you look at the weather network, it says light snow is falling now, LOL. It said that all day yesterday. Light snow my butt. At least not in my part of Montreal. Downtown (those pics) has less snow.
