My little boy and I are going to Discovery Cove Nov 2.....I don't know how to snorkel. Does Discovery Cove give you crash courses in this?

Thank you
Charleyann

I don't recall seeing a crash course in snorkeling at DC, but here is my suggestion. Get the gear, and go practice in the lazy river area; it stays about the same depth all around, is very clear, and was never crowded when we were there in June of 2004. Once you feel comfortable with hearing your breathing, and everything, then try to snorkle area.

I recommend this since I freaked out in the snorkeling area hearing myself breathe, and I was in the deeper section--there are areas that are shallow, and areas that are deep. Once I relaxed, I loved it.

Thank you for your quick response. I think too, I may buy some from our local dollar store and practice in our pool. I just can't seem to breathe with those things.

I think the trickiest part of learning to snorkel is training yourself to mouth-breathe instead of breathing thru your nose. I got used to it by concentrating on my breathing and taking deep breaths in and out thru my mouth/the snorkel (Think like at the Dr.'s "Deep breath in. Deep breath out"). Once you get a steady rhythm and have a little practice, I think it starts to become more natural. If you start getting frustrated with it, practice while out of the water but by breathing in and out of your mouth/the snorkel and I would suggest doing it with the mask on so if it fogs up, you know you are nose breathing. You can also gradually get into the water by putting only 1/2 your head underwater while using the snorkel but keeping your nose above water level, just in case you inhale by accident. Practicing in the pool a bit before your trip is a great idea because once you're there you'll want to focus your attention on the great underwater views!

Also, make sure not to go to far under and breathe in the water... :rolleyes1

I MAY have done this one. Or twice...

the most important thing to learn is how to clear your snorkel if you do get water in it. that way you don't swallow or panic.
