Can anybody out there tell me what their experience was with snorkeling in Key West? If it's good, what are some suggested spots to snorkel? My DH has recently become a snorkel fanatic and wants to do some snorkeling while we're in Key West. I afraid he's expecting the same type of experience that he's had in the islands and I don't want him to be disappointed.

Appreciate any guidance you can provide. Thanks.

Although I have yet to be in Key West, I have a co-worker who goes twice a year, with and without his family. His advice was to do a snorkeling excursion whereby you get on a boat and they take you somewhere. However, that being said, he has snorkeled right on Key West at Ft Zachary State Park. He said the snorkeling was OK, but not similar to what a boat excursion would be like. I have called Ft Zachary and the park ranger said that snorkeling would be decent "right behind the seawall". From looking at my map, there are about 4 seawalls on the Atlantic Ocean side. The park ranger also said that if the winds were blowing from the South, visibility would be greatly reduced and snorkeling success would be extremely limited.

My family will be there on April 27th and am planning to try snorkeling at Ft. Zachary. Our youngest child is 3 yrs old so that puts the kabbash on any boat snorkeling excursions. Hopefully the weather cooperates.

I had called around initially (back when I thought my 3 yr old would be in the Disney Club), and found dozens of snorkelling tour operators. Shirley Nelson Brown, originally from Key West and a regular poster here on the boards, is very helpful with Key West information and can suggest specific operatiors.

Good luck.

Hello there - yep I am an ol's conch from the island of Key West -
and familiar with snorkeling in and around Key West - for quite sometime, the beauty of snorkeling around KW has just been reduced to not very much - now you can get a boat out of Stock Island that will take you out and from what I understand from my sons, it is almost like it use to be around the island - you are most welcomed to send a SASE to the shop, and I will be more than happy to send information I have on Key West - too you can call Shelly at Key Cat's and she will be more than glad to help you - I will post her number when I get to the shop - snorkeling behind Ft. Zackery isn't what it use to be also remember you will be on the Gulf side - if I can help, just call the shop at 800-950-4559.
Wishing everyone a great week.
Always
Shirley

stiebermom: Thanks for the info. MyDH in his excitement/impatience, went right off and booked a snorkel excursion. I'd also be interested to hear how your snorkeling was when you get back from your April trip. So, now....

Question for snelsonbrown: Shirley, this was done working with Susan Rodnon and she got us booked with Reef Express. Are you familiar with either?

Again, thanks to both of you for your help! ....and Shirley, I've sent off the envelope today. Look forward to receiving the info back!
