I know that it its mandatory that you wear vests when snorkeling on Castaway Cay. I read a post that said the vests are hung on the life guard chair and you can borrow them from there.

My question is: since these are blow up vests, is there any cleaning done of the mouthpieces or are they just hung up after use, waiting for the next person to take it??

I wrote about this a few weeks ago. They were not washed and I was horrified, and this was the week before anyone got sick. I finished and the guard said I could just put it back down where I got it from. I realized it was a free for all so I held onto it for the day because I wasn't about to share any more germs than I already had. Maybe someone swoops down from a palm tree and disinfects each one as soon as someone puts it back, but sadly, I don't think so.

We bought our own snorkeling gear including vests with us. Not sure
were you can get snorkeling vests, you can try dive shops or ebay. Gary

Problem solved...

Better yet... bring your own snorkling stuff... the equipment they rent is not condusive to a great snorkling experience... also, if you are serious about a snorkling experience seriously consider doing it somewhere else... Castaway's snorkling area leaves much to be desired...

Ewwww! That sounds almost as bad as band in high school, when different classes shared the same instruments. Yuck! We're bringing full PFDs for the children, and snorkelling gear for everyone, but we did plan on using the adult vests from Disney.

Food (spit?) for thought.

My DH borrowed one of those vests on CC last week. After he put it back, I saw attendants taking a bunch of them away to be sanitized. They were cleaning everything that anyone touched last week, so perhaps the virus has taught them that they need to do the vests between users all the time, not just during times of cirisis...? In any case, you could smear a little Purell on the mouthpiece and let it dry a minute or 2 if you are worried. It's just alcohol, basically.

FYI -- we have our own snorkeling gear, too, but had not purchased the vests. We wanted to buy one in Cozumel, and it cost $65! Pretty pricey...I think I'll look on eBay!

WE were on the Nov 2nd Eastern(pre-disease) cruise and We thought the snorkeling
at Castaway Cay was great! You have to go out pretty far but we saw the neighborhood
baracuda and a stingray along with alot of fish.. Much better than snorkeling
in St Martin! Gary
