Snooty treatment while shopping yesterday!

WHY is it ok to be so rude and discriminatory to large size people?

Why is it ok to be so rude to ANYone, right?? :p

Black, white, fat, skinny, mentally challenged, geek, nerd or anywhere in between....it's never ok to be rude and discriminitory to other human beings.

Sometimes I think it's just a poor fit when a store hires clerks that are snippy. Those aren't the kind of people I'd want working for me.....
not everyone has a customer service attitude. Good customer service comes natural to some folks, and you really notice them when you see them working in a store. :)

(I felt like saying "because you couldn't fit in anything there" but I wasn't going to lower myself - well except for the little thing I said under my breath )

You should have said it out loud. Life is short. Trust me, you would have felt so much better if you had been vocal :-)

There is an upscale mall located near me. I don't go there very often because most of the shops there are not my style. I don't feel the need to get all dolled up to go shopping. If my jeans and t-shirt aren't good enough for you than my money isn't either.

The mall does have a couple of stores that I do like -- Nordstrom especially. The sales people in Nordstrom are nice though.

I can guess which mall you are talking about :) I agree, the folks at Nordstroms there are very nice. The people in the Cellar at Macy's there are wonderful as well. I'm a "regular" in two stores in that mall that aren't department stores, they greet me by name as I walk in. It doesn't matter how I am dressed when I walk in, I always get great service at both of them. But there are other stores in that mall that will ignore you if you aren't dressed to the nines. I take my business elsewhere.

After asking where my husband was and would he be coming in with me the next time I visited, they denied! my request for a brochure! I chalked it up to a small town, but how obnoxious.

I had a similar experience at All-American Chevrolet in Middletown, NJ. Took a test drive and then sat down to talk price. Sales idiot asked when my husband would be available to come in to talk to him. My mouth hit the floor. I walked out after telling him he lost my business forever, and I'd make it my mission in life to talk about how rudely I'd been treated by that dealership.

My experience was pretty humiliating. I was looking for an outfit to wear to a wedding about a month and a half ago. I had found a really cute skirt, but needed a limeish green twin set or sweater to go with it. The store I bought the skirt at was right next to Dress Barn so I thought I'd look there. I normally do not shop at Dress Barn, but figured they had the more teachery style I was looking for. When I walked in the store was pretty crowded and an older lady walked up to me and asked in a snotty voice if she could help me. I explained what I was looking for and she looked me up and down and asked what size (very loudly)- like I really want to announce my size to the whole store. So I said, "It depends on the style of shirt and whether they come in S,M,L or size numbers." She huffed at me and said (very loudly and snottily again) "I think you would have more luck finding something at our plus size store a few doors down. It has stuff for bigger people (and she made a motion with her hands as to say how big I was.)" Now I am not a small person and I am pretty tall (5'9",) but even if I were plus sized I couldn't imagine the nerve of this woman. Everyone was just looking at me and I'm sure my face was so red. I just left and, of course, thought of some good comebacks, but not till later.
I wrote a letter to the national headquarters and they said it would be forwarded to the store manager, but never heard anything else since then. My mom and some of her friends are frequenters of Dress Barn (teachers ;) ) and have said they will not shop there anymore.

Sooo glad to see you here FAITHINKARMA! Just got my computer back from repairs. It went down right after we last spoke online. Stepson did the repairs and DH said, "Be nice, don't rush him." Took forever and still isn't right! :worried: Well, just wanted to say hello and wish you well. :wave2:

Whoa! Let's back up the truck here on a couple of comments that were misinturpetted!

First off, I never said that they couldn't fit into anything because they were overweight! I was saying that because they were both pushing 95 yrs old - one was about the size of an elf (and not a cute one) and the other had certain parts... well... hanging almost to the equator. Yeah, umm.. not exactly Old Navy type material... at least nothing I would want to see in some of that stuff. (actually I only wear the t-shirts - I just can't deal with the pants that only come up to about 4 inches under your belly button!!) Yet they were in their designer duds strutting their stuff.

Geez Louise some of you jumped to some quick conclusions... I'm sure as heck not classified as skinny!

I just have to say, I cannot imagine bringing a dog to a shopping mall. It astounds me that they allow that! Were there a lot of other people there with dogs? if not, that might also explain the snootiness.

Actually, it was Saks that implimented and encouraged the other retailers in the mall (and it is an open air mall) to allow dogs in the stores. 80% of the stores allow various stages of dogs - some allow all - some only small - and some only if they are carried. The mall even provided the stores with stickers to identify the animal friendly stores. Stores like Restoration Hardware, Storehouse, Sharper Image, Yankee Candle, Dillards, and Saks have cookies and water available for your pets and treat them like royalty (well, maybe not Saks ;) )

The mall itself has provided drinking troughs throughout the common areas. There are bins with "oops" bags for cleaning up after your dog if it has an accident (It's a bannable offense to not clean up after your dog and I have never seen one speck of mess since the mall opened - plus - any roudy behavior by the animal or if the owner fails to control their animal and they do not behave in an obedient and civilized manner - they are asked to leave.) and they have dog statues even throughout the sitting areas.

Oh yeah.. and guess who the architects conferred with on the planning of this mall? Disney - and you can tell. :)

I think it's a fun place to be and the idea of bringing your pet is cool. And judging by the crowd this mall has generated versus the other mall that opened in Richmond at the same time, I think the general public agrees. Unless of course you are a big time dog hater and don't want to be anywhere near them.

Wow, Lauri, that is really amazing!!! I honestly have never heard of such a thing before. My boss and another close friend would probably love it. I'd probably be a little leery of it and avoid that particular mall--I tend to be skittish around large dogs, it would make me nervous (dog bite when I was a kid). But it's kinda cool that dog lovers have that option.

We have a very high end, dog friendly mall in Phoenix also. They even have 'special events' on the grassy area in the center of the mall....guest speakers and the like ::yes::
