Sneaky parents beware

There are pretty significant health regulations regarding the changing of diapers, etc. That is a big difference between Flounders and the Club.

Also, there are NOT a lot of diapers on board. We had two babies in diapers when we cruised. I made a huge mistake in packing. When I calculated the diapers we needed for the seven day cruise, I counted up how many changes we did each day---- but I didn't multiply by TWO!!! Show's the silly errors one makes when rushed to pack.

Making it worse, there was a hurricane, so our itinerary was thrown off. We had planned to replenish our diaper supply along the way, but we were on the ship more than expected with an extra stop at Castaway Cay. No diapers there. Also, when the ship is in port the stores don't open on the ship. And the store was limited in its size of diapers.


We did go to see if they had extras at Flounders, but they had none in our size. Make sure you pack PLENTY of diapers, and remember that the itinerary can change due to the weather.

One of our children is developmentally disabled and had trouble at the time with not having accidents. He was seven. For the most part, he is dry but we know that wet accidents aren't uncommon with him. We talked with the staff and explained the situation, and they were okay with his wearing a pull-up. We did not stray far from the club and he was with us most of hte time, but there was no problem.

First, I agree with DCL's policy. Secondly, even if you DON'T agree, they certainly make the policy very clear. Then it's your decision to A) Not go on the cruise. B) Don't use the service or C) Don't leave the child onboard without you.

Frankly, it's ridiculous that this person admittedly "slipped" her child in there knowing the policy. If you're child is borderline trained (which I understand) use your best judgement and be prepared to be paged. Then again, perhaps "best judgement" doesn't mean what it once did.

You know this to me is just as bad as the parents who complained about the Mickey pool rule for non PTd kids and the fact that we saw them with their kids in either the main Mickey pool or the Goofy the pool after then with no swim diaper on. This to me seems like a pretty basic common sense thing but I guess it isn't to some people. One woman started complaining to me about the ship's policy & I simply told her that I agreed with it and it was better to be safe than not follow the rules and have them close the pool for a day or more since that would affect everyone else.

We made DD stay in the fountain ear the first day since with all the excitement she was off schedule and PTg was a new thing for her. After a couple days she was doing great using the toilet on the ship & we would let her go in the pool without a swim diaper...only after she had already done her business that morning. The second day that ear wasn't working & there was no water in it so the CM I asked when it should be fixed told me to let her use the other ear. This didn't make much sense to me with the rule though. They did need to close the pool for 2 hours on Thursday because someone threw up in the water. Considering it was rocky again, that probably couldn't be helped but they were very fast in cleaning it.

Okay, I'm going to be brutally honest here. My dd was 5 on our first DCL cruise. She had been potty trained since she was 2 - actually was our easiest to potty train (including night time). Anyway, one day while she was in the club, we got the page...turns out she had 'wet' herself. When we got there they handed us a large shirt (from the Discover the Magic show) and let us clean her up in the restroom. She told us she got scared because she forgot where the restroom was and just couldn't hold it anymore. Poor thing. Anyway, I am 100% in agreement with what the CMs did - I would never expect them to have to clean up accidents on top of everything else they have to deal with. Call me mean if you want, but I wouldn't want to clean up someone else's child after an accident either - it takes a stronger person than me to deal with that type of profession. I couldn't imagine the liability insurance cost for (900 kids x 52 weeks + 900 kids x 52 weeks x 2.....) if they had the responsibility of actually dealing with "naked" kids - in today's society, an adult who is accused of 'touching' a kid is guilty, fired, unemployable, until proven innocent after many $$$ and time in the legal system. Bet it would be hard to find CMs to work on the ship if they had that duty also. It's shameful that parents knowingly put a non-potty trained child in the club - it's ultimately their fault that poor child suffers.

Just FYI, and this was on NCL, but they were very clear about what would happen if there was an 'accident' and a parent didn't answer a page within a certain stated amount of time. The doctor or nurse on call would be called in, the child would be changed, and the cost of a house call would be billed to the parent's onboard account. That would be $150, by the way. Children in diapers were also not accepted unless the parents left a diaper bag.

I have to believe Disney has something like this in place, and it would make sense. No one would leave a child in that condition long, certainly not for hours.

A parent lying about a potty trained child is not the counselors problem. If the parents know the rules going in...then they shouldn't put the kid in the club.

Now, that's an excellent policy - the kid gets taken care of properly and so does the parent.

I like the nurse/doctor policy. If the parent doesn't come for their child...they both get what is needed...a dry bottom...and a big bill!
I teach elementary school and I have had children as old as 3rd grade have an accident. I love kids, but I would not want to change them. I wouldn't want that liability! Thank heavens for wonderful nurses. That is where our children go and they have things for the kids to change into and she calls the parents.
A child who has been trained for years can still have an accident!

we had our 2 3/4 yo dd in the kids club because she was trained. We NEVER left her there to leave the ship or go on excursions. She did have 2 accidents and I had told the counselors that if she was involved with something that she really enjoyed that she might need some prompting to use the potty. When I returned to the kids club after the page she had been changed into a Dinsney Magic shirt and all of her things were in a bag. Once I just brought her with me and returned to dinner with her the other I brought clothes to the club and changed her there and left her because we were in Palos. Part of my dd's problem was that she was too short to get on the potty herself and there is no stool to help. The pottys in the club are small childrens pottys but the seat inserts are up high on the wall. I did ask the counselors if they could help her onto the potty and they said that would be fine. Depending on where our dinner was I would also go to the club between courses to toilet her. We really enjoyed the use of the kids club even though we used it probably a total of 5 hours our 7 day cruise.

I grew up in Shady Side, and my sister has a weekend place in Chesapeake beach.

I fish out of the rod & Reel often , but I like frenchies and Stinnets to eat at (more reminiscent of old Chesapeake beach)

I remember going to the old amusment park at CB, but don't remember the gambling.

WOW jgalecpa... You brought back a lot of memories for me. My Grandmother lived in Chesapeake Beach. 1st street on the Bay. I would visit her doing the summer and would fish at the Rod and Reel all the time. She used to own a dress shop in town years ago. We ate at Stinnets all the time and then head to the ammusement park. My favorite thing to do was crabing off the pier there. Thanks for the memories...

I don't think this is about disease. It's about the legalities of sexual assault on a child -- I'm sure Disney and the staff just don't want to get into the whole problems of, as someone else said, cleaning up a kids privates. It could lead to very messy legal problems.

Can anyone clarify what happens in Flounders Reef? My 9 month old will be in there in May and she will need her diaper changed. I am fine coming and doing it if that is what is expected but just want to prepare myself ahead of time. Thanks for the response.

Flounders will change diapers, just send them along with a change of clothes, sippy cup/bottle etc. (all labeled, or they will label them for you)

Flounders changes diapers. Just bring your own supplies and bottles, cups and whatever else. First time we used flounders in 2001 they used stickers to label everything this time in October they used permanent marker on cups/bottles to label them.

Just for the record for all the people that are confused about oc my dd had two accidents on our 7 day this October and both times I returned to oc within 5 min after the page and they had her out of her wet clothes and in a disney magic t shirt. This happened with 2 different counselors and it could of been just because my dd probably was unhappy because her clothes were wet. They had her wet clothes in a bag and labeled at the desk when I got there. She was sitting on a mat watching a movie with a counselor when I arrived. The counselors were not upset at all that this happened and told me as I was leaving with her to bring her back after I got her dressed. Although I did not ask any specifics about her accidents my daughter did receive speech therapy for an expressive speech delay and my thoughts are that she told them she needed to use the potty and was not understood by the staff. Everytime I brought her I did tell who ever was on "bathroom watch" that she says this for potty and to ask her if she needs to go. I also went into the bathroom with her when I dropped her off to toilet her and help her wash her hands.
