Took DD9 to doc today - DD has flat feet so we are to get her sneakers with arch support for flat feet. Probably not going to be budget. Does anyone have a recommendation for which brand and style? Just wondering before I go out to shop. Thanks so much
Oh, and we already got DD Teva Tirra sandals that she is just now agreeing to wear them after doctor told her too;)

I don't have flat feet, but I have found the Addidas and Nike tennis shoes always have a good arch. I would recommend going to a shoe specialty shop (a mom and pop type, not a large chain that has H.S's working for them.) They can often find a shoe that will fit your foot type. I know my dh goes to one near our house and they are always right on when recommending a shoe type that helps with his bad knees. He tends to like New Balance and Nike.

You are so right that I have to go to the mom and pop store!! I just called Modell's sport shop (Chain) and they recommended the Nike Shox but the mom & pop specialty shoe store said no, they are not good for flat feet. I probably got a H.S. kid at the chain store :headache:

I have flat feet and could never find shoes with an arch support that weren't painful.

I ended up going to a podiatrist and getting custom made orthotics. Now I can wear almost any tennis shoe... just take out the insole and slip in the orthotic. Also, the cost of the orthotics was covered through my insurance, so it was a really cheap fix.

hmmm orthotics, that's another angle to think about. Sorry to hear that you had to deal with pain getting shoes in the past but that it's all worked out with the orthotics :)

DD14 has almost flat feet...as close as you can get without being 'truly flat footed'. The therapist and the person who cast her feet for her $300+
orthotics (forget what his title was) said NO!! NO!! NO!! to Nike and Addidas. They really didn't even like New Balance. Of the brands available at chain stores Asics were the best choice, but there is a variance in them. You need to look for particular styles. Fortunately, my DD's Physical therapist went shopping with us to show us what to specifically look for and how they should fit.
Best of Luck!! When we went to a small chain store here in MD called Charm City Run and the ones they recommended were $150. :scared1: and the PT suggested that they be replaced every 4 to 6 months. :headache:

Runners should replace their shoes every 300 miles....which can be really often, like every 4 to 6 WEEKS. Ouch.
Yeah, I know...
but these are for just 'normal' every day wear.
Do to some add'l orthopedic issues, she's really not supposed to run at all.

I agree with going to a Mom & Pop store for shoes in general. If you can't find sneakers there, try a running shop - one that sells nothing but running shoes. I don't know where you're located, but Princeton, NJ has a place called Princeton Running Company. They're owend by the Running Company which has locations around the US. I ended up there for DD11 because of her wide feet.

Good luck!

I have flat feet and so do two of my kids. We use the super feet insoles in our shoes. We got ours at a local running store. They are also available on Amazon. My DS has to wear Nikes when he is on campus. His orthopedist does not like that brand at all. The Super Feet insoles have made a huge difference in the way his feet and knees feel.

I'm nosey - why does he have to wear Nike on campus???

It's fine to be nosey. I did not know the deal until last year after he went to college.

He is part of the college basketball team. Nike helps fund the athletics at the school. Those who are in the program are supposed to wear Nike when on campus. If he wears other brands of clothing, shoes, accessories, etc, then he has to cover the name and emblem with duct tape. If they don't, Nike has the authority to quit funding the program.

It is the same in every university I know of that is funded by an athletic company. Michael Jordan's son got the most publicity about this. Here's an article. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=4623688.

Stride Rite possibly. New Balance -- go to a New Balance store for fitting. You want the higher numbered styles as the lower numbered styles sold in department stores usually do not have the construction details needed.

DS developed shin splints and stress fractures in high school before he was referred to a podiatrist for orthotics and advised to wear only New Balance. The whole family wears New Balance now.

I did say that I don't have flat feet, those are just the brands I have liked for running. I was more posting to have her try a mom and pop store because they know what they are talking about when it comes to different shoes for different problems. I would definatley go with whatever they recommend over what I would say because I am not an expert on flat feet. Anyway, yes, rule of thumb for any shoes worn daily is to replace them every 4-6 months, expecially if you have problems with your feet or knees. Even earlier if the use is considered heavy.

New Balance New Balance that is all I wear now. My feet has stop hurt now.

ITA with New Balance. You can search for the sneakers that would best suit you online. You plug in what issues you have with your feet.

they have free shipping through 9/6 and free returns

That is interesting, as my arch is fallen and I went into the walking co and I was to told asics and a orthotic. The shoes were 140 and the arch was 60. I was unsure so I did not get them. But after reading this I may need to.Jo

Wow! I had no idea! I can understand wearing the shoes while they are playing, but I'm shocked that they can dictate what shoes he wears when he is at class. I think he should wear the shoes that are best with his feet, but completely covered with duct tape. That would bring a lot of attention to the fact that Nike doesn't make shoes that support his feet enough. ;)
