Snakes at FtW

My fear of legless reptiles is well founded. I have lived in some really not so nice places where I felt the biggest threat to my life were snakes. Nothing like being an hour and a half away from antivenom by helicopter when the venom can kill you in 45 minutes.

I can appreciate your view of reptiles. Must have been S.E. Asia or the Middle East - or both?? They have some rather nasty reptiles in those areas!! I would not care to mess around with Mamba's, Cobra's, or Gila Monsters for that matter.

I have this insane fear of spiders!! The only good spider is a dead one, IMHO!!

Oh... and I will not swim in anything but a good ol' swimming pool! Ponds, lakes, oceans, rivers, streams, all have unseen critters lurking in them. I fear salt water the most. Sharks, jelly fish, sting rays. Oh no... not this girl!!!

can I be first VP and Sgt At Arms for the Death to the Snake club? I never met a snake I didn't want to stomp the guts out of. We had one in the garage that I thought was dead, until it moved. Then I used what only an experienced golfer would use, my 4 iron to blast it, then fling it in the street.

Stepanahalf snakes -- after you get bit you can walk a step and a half before you drop dead.

One of the closest I cam to dying was in the jungle -- because of a snake.

We were fording a river that was chest high so all our gear came off and we held it above our heads. As we were crossing, all these rounds started impacting in the water all around me. I dropped down under water and came up with my M-16 on auto looking for targets. When I came up the idiot behind me had smoke coming out of his barrel and he said to me "Did you see the size of that snake?" The moron had almost killed me trying to shoot that dam snake. I almost returned the favor.

Snakes don't bother me. Nicaragua Jim?

I have to weigh in on the snake lovers side. My husband and I collect venomous snakes for zoos as a hobby (no pay involved) and we have always kept non-venomous snakes as pets. We treat the venomous one with respect when we are catching them and have never been bitten even though we must get up close and personal with them. We both are also conversationists by trade and I need to get on my soap box for a moment - snakes are an essential part of the ecosystem - the circle of life (to repeat a well known phrase). If we kill off all the snakes as some of you suggest, other animal populations will become out of balance and cause problems that we have already seen in areas that have rattlesnake roundups for example. The rodent populations balloon out of control and get into the grain storage areas (and I don't relish that thought). And that's just one example. I'm off my soap box now. A snake is smooth and cold BUT they do have personality. I've had one that would give me the look "where's my food." He knew the hand that fed him. I love reptiles. I know I'm strange but my favorite pet was an iguana. I trained him to use the litter box and whenever he wanted to get warm, he would climb up my body and sit on my head. He could take on any cat with just a whip of his tail (trust me, I seen it happen)

I don't want to kill all the snakes, just the ones that come near me.

And NO, I wouldn't hurt a puppy...... unless it was a snake puppy. Heck, we have 3 cats now, and I HATE cats.

Iguanas, frogs, and all other reptiles are OK in my book. I'm fascinated by Gators... and not only the kind that live in Gainesville.
