Snacks on the plane

Its been 2 years since I have been on a airplane. Are you still not allowed to bring food from home on the plane? I have talked to some friends and they told me that they have brought food from home and nothing was said when they went through security. Were they just lucky or is it allowed? thankx

As long as it doesn't fall under the liquid ban (or, if it does, it is less than 100mL), you are fine with taking food through security.
