I am having a pool party Saturday for my soon to be 7 year olds birthday. There will be several kids his age plus about 25 adult family and friends. Since it will be in the middle of the day, I am trying to come up with some good food ideas. Of course we are having cake and ice cream. I am also planning on doing a fruit tray with dip. Any other good ideas for food at a pool party?

A veggie tray
finger sandwhichs

Since it will be outside, popcisles or freezies.

Grown-ups - finger sandwiches, salads, etc.

Kids - Pizza bagel bites, corn dogs and chicken nuggets.

My mom has been making a veggie pizza for every event our family has recently. It's a crescent roll crust, baked, cooled and topped with Ranch dressing. On top of the ranch "sauce" you put raw veggies - broccoli, carrots, green peppers, whatever you like. Then, sprinkle finely shredded cheddar cheese (or whatever kind of cheese you prefer) throughout. Cut into squares. Kids love it because it's a fun way to eat veggies.

We've had the same kind of party several years in a row. In fact, we usually have two birthday parties for DD - one for our family and "adult" friends and one for her schoolmates.

Since there are more kids at the "school" party, we keep the menu a bit more kid friendly. Chips, fruit, hot dogs/burgers/lunch meat & cheese tray, veggies, cookies, cake and ice cream, lemonade and iced tea (since parents are welcome to stay we also serve beer). We serve all the food in the kitchen (which is right off the backdoor) to keep flies and pests to a minimum.

For the adult parties we usually get a little more extravagant with the main dish... but the last couple of times we've just gotten take out brisket from a great BBQ place in town. We've done our own BBQ chicken, turkey and ribs before, with potato salad, baked beans, a big mixed green salad, etc... Chips and guac or seven layer dip are always a hit. We usually serve sodas, lemonade, iced tea, beer and wine at these parties.

I know you said you're planning a fruit tray, but I'd specifically suggest watermelon cut into wedges. Pretty much everyone loves it, and it helps the kids stay hydrated in the heat too.

How about goldfish crackers, to keep with the swimming theme?

You can get a little snow cone maker for under $20, and the kids go crazy for those!

Oh, thanks for this! Having pool parties on Thursday and Friday for my kids, and I'm looking as well for things beyond just chips. Question: on Thursday, the kids have 1/2 day, and the PTO is providing pizza. The party is from 1 - 3. Now, around here, you always serve pizza, regardless of the time. Maybe just heavy snacks? I'll get pizza for the Friday party.

I'm just serving water and lemonade for beverages. I was thinking about those little single serve cups of ice cream, too.

flip flop cookies. Use licorice for the thong/toe keeper of the shoe.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. They were all really great ideas. I didn't even thing about a watermelon. I might make a watermelon basket. To the poster that suggested the flip flop cookies. Those are so cool, I made those a couple of years ago with Nutter Butter's and licorice, the kid's loved them. I forgot completely about those. Those are definetly going on my list.
