hi, please dont burn me for this question, i just want some advice please.

my son is 17 and smokes. i understand what he is doing is against the law untill he is 18, but anyone who has had to deal with this situation will know how hard it is to stop them.
my son mentioned smoking on holiday and until then i hadnt given it a thought.

i told him he wont be able to take it into the parks as they search the bags and they will know he is under age, (we wont carry it for him as we try to do everything poss to make it as hard for him to smoke as we can) he has excepted that so now hes thinking that he will just smoke whilst at the hotel. (POFQ)

he smokes about 5-10 a day but i also worry that he will get mood swings or want to go back to the hotel early just so he can smoke.

has anyone else had to deal with this situation if so how did u handle it whilst on holiday.

cal :sad1:

I very much doubt they will take his cigarettes off him as they won't know he is under 18. He just won't be able to buy any while he is there.

yes , if he has your permission , he can smoke in the parks. In America there is a very different attitude towards smoking compared to Ireland / UK / Europe. There are designated smoking areas in the parks, and that's the ONLY place smoking is permitted. It might be worth telling him that if he wants to smoke, then its his responsibility to research the parks and find the smoking areas himself. That way he knows exactly how difficult it is in a place like Disney. You might find he chooses not to smoke in the parks as say the designated smoking area is far from your present location and he will miss out on a ride to go have a smoke :)

Even though I have never smoked , many family members and friends and work colleagues over the years have smoked. In a situation like this, I would never force a smoker to stop smoking while in the parks. It would do more harm than good to both your relationship with your son and to the stress levels of your son and the rest of the party.

While we all know the dangers of smoking, it is only when the smoker themselves decides to give up then, that they will successfully stop.

also note that all hotel rooms are non smoking, strictly enforced.

smoking inside a hotel room will lead to a hefty penalty as well as recovery fees. (Disney will charge somewhere between $250 and $500 if you get caught smoking in a room, balcony or patio)

there are designated smoking areas at POFQ which are loacated along the river.
As a courtesy to other guests, try to have him avoid smoking in the covered walkway, in front of the room.

thanks chmurf, will def follow rules, are the smoking areas at the hotel clearly marked?
cal :)

yes, and you'll find them on the resort map you'll receive at check in

Clearly marked is a loose term. They are usually just a small smoking sign on the bin or bench to let you know so they can be a little difficult to spot even if you do check the park/resort map. Also if there is construction going on then they might be marked on the map but not available.

DTD is the only place without designated smoking areas.

Ifs there's an obvious smoking bin then it's a smoking area.

AK- stand in front of Everest and make a 90 degree right turn. Look right. That's a smoking area.

DHS - walk through the tables to the end of the food court area as if to turn left to Rock n Roller Coaster. That's a smoking area. There's another one near Star Tours but I can't describe quite where it's not obvious.

Epcot - in a nothing space in front of and to the right of Mission Space looking right if you are facing away from the ride is a smoking area. There are also two on the walk around World Showcase.

MK - some concrete benches to I think the left of the entrance to the Swiss Family Robinson tree house if you are looking at the attraction. Also in front of the boarding dock to Tom Dawyer Island. MK is rough for smokers.

There is at least one designated smoking area at each water park.

Encourage him to give up. It's a curse. I know.

we do but to no avail, it breaks my heart to see him poison himself and not be able to stop him. when i first found out that he was smoking i had a compleat hissy meltdown, all that did was stress him out and made him smoked more

i'm hoping he will be so busy enjoying himself he will forget to smoke whilst in the parks.

Has he tried e-cigs? I've been on them and not smoked for 18 months now. And while I'm fairly sure I could get flamed to death for saying this :), it's fairly easy to stealth vape a couple of puffs in a quiet corner to keep the cravings down...
