smoking issues

I was just flipping thru my newly arrived Birnbaum's 2005 guide and noticed it says that smoking is allowed on stateroom verandahs?

If this is true is it possible to request a non-smoking area of the ship -- I'd hate to shell out the extra bucks for a verandah and then be forced to inhale smoke from my neighbors verandah the whole trip. :sad2: :sad2: :sad2:

Does anyone have any info on the smoking policy on the ships?

Thanks!

That is correct, you are allowed to smoke on any verandah, none are designated non-smoking. Won't get into the smoking/non-smoking debate....

Nope, not yet. This is a risk you take. You can only hope that your neighbors don't smoke or are not out there smoking at the same time you want to enjoy your verandah. Truthfully, the only time that this should be a problem is while the ship is stopped. When its moving, the breeze should clear the smoke.

There has been several discussions on this topic in the past - but none reciently.

If you are at sea and aft of the person smoking you will smell the smoke since the breeze will blow it right next door. We were in a stateroom on a sea day having a DIS meet and couldn't keep the glass door open because of the gentleman smoking a cigar on the verandah forward of that room. We could smell it inside the stateroom when the door was open.

you know, the we had been booked in to a forward cabin and I was thinking of changing to one emore aft, but the way I see it now is that the more forward the less chance of someone forward of me smoking and ruining the verandah experience!

to lbgraves: how frustrating the cigar smoker must have been! My condolences.

You'd think disney would make some effort at controlling this...

I won't complain about DCL's smoking permitted verandahs ever again after having recently sailed on Carnival. I was apalled at all the areas that smoking is permitted. A couple of times I thought I was going to pass out.

I think the only time anyone will see complete relief from this is if DCL ever becomes nonsmoking.

I hope there's nobody smoking in the verandahs next to mine, but if I do run across that I think I'll probably just blast my offensive music in their direction.

That's an idea! I was thinking if I encounter this of encouraging my 3 & 7 year old to play loudly, singing some obnoxious children's song on the verandah...hopefully it's not an issue we'll have to deal with.

I was worried about the smoking on the ship as well, I did find a note in the passporter about it, it does say that "smoking is allowed on the verandahs, dance club, part of the adults only lounge, Diversions(Magic) ESPN Skybox(Wonder) and open-air quest areas. Mickey Pool area is all non-smoking and no smoking is allowed in the staterooms." It also says that Disney does enforce is smoking rules.
I am very glad that there is no smoking in the staterooms, I was afraid that we were going to get a stateroom that smelled like smoke.
Sept 10, 2005 will be our first cruise.

That's good advice, Disney Planner Mama. My 7 and 3 year olds can make quite a commotion when they put their minds to it.

Hee hee, I love the noisy kids idea! Smokers have a right to puff away outside, and I have a right to a loud party out there too. ;)

But seriously, reduce your chances of a problem by choosing a room with only one neighbor (like 5622/5122) or one next to a navigators verandah. I am VERY allergic to smoke, so I have become an expert on avoiding it after over 40 Disney cruises.

It's a risk your gonna take. If there isn't a policy agaisnt it, people are gonna smoke. My grandma will be cruising with us in October, and she is a smoker.:sad2: I hate the smell of smoke. She also knows that most people do so she tries to go out of her way to not bother anybody. Really, I wouldn't try to annoy the people because they might try to make it worse for you. So be careful.

Wish I'd thought of that, Ink. But since I didn't might I suggest that Disney hang a platform or a swing off the back of the boat like the window washers use on skyscrapers? What the heck, the smokers are risking their lives anyway. Why not let them dangle over the ocean to do it?

You're Sick

Go as far forward as you can. As others have pointed out, as long as the ship is moving the smoke is going to blow aft.

My husband enjoys a fine cigar from time to time. We had a balcony stateroom located completely aft and it was no problem as far as others being uncomfortable. Perhaps instead of inflicting noisy children on all those around you a better idea would be to politely ask your neighbor to smoke only when you are not on the balcony? Most people are fairly reasonable...

Erin :)

Give me a break, people smoke and if there on their own verandah that they paid for, then so be it. And your going to get back at them with using your kids, GROW UP! It's a free country and smoking is not illegal.

No, not illegal. Just horribly disgusting and dangerous.

I'm terribly sorry to have offended anyone; it's my last day on the Disboard and I'm just trying to put on as many posts as I can. Sayonara, and Bon Voyage to all !

Of course this is what we would do -- most people -- particularly disney fans, I've discovered, are indeed reasonable. I was just kidding about the kids. I would be as horrified by obnoxious loud children on the balcony.

This is one of the easier problems in life to accomodate.

:cloud9: (look, it's me so blissfully happy on my disney cruise that I don't even notice the smoke)

My husband also likes a cigar here and there, I do not care for it much either, However if he goes OUTSIDE on a balcony that we paid for than that is his right. Everyone needs to have a good time.

Just got back. Our neighbors smoked on their verandah. The only reason I knew was that I heard one ask another for a cigarette and a light. I saw the smoke from time to time. The smoke blew out to sea. I did not smell a thing. (I am fairly sensitive to the smell of cigarette smoke.) Don't worry. Be happy. :flower:
