Right up front I am anti smoking but my DW is a smoker,my gripe is this if you're going to have a smoking policy ie designated areas, then enforce it!!I couldn't believe the nos of people just walking about the parks puffing away!At one point we were in the queue for Peter Pan witha party of 4 stood at the entrance puffing away whilst talking to a CM!Come on WDW one way or the other please!

I couldn't agree more! During my last trip, I was a smoker, and I was very careful to only smoke in the designated areas. This trip, I'll be a non-smoker... or at least, I hope I will! I quit about three months ago and have done a pretty good job (I've slipped once or twice, having a cigrette or two, never more, when drinking... but in three months, I think I've had maybe four cigs).

If I was annoyed at people who didn't abide by the police before - and I was - I can only imagine how I'll feel this time around, as a struggling-to-not-smoke-non-smoker!

At the same time, I guess in some ways I feel a little sorry for the cast members who are suddenly finding that they have to be "smoke police." Some smokers - and I hope I was never one of them - can get downright nasty when told, no matter how politely, that they are in a non-smoking area.

And let's be honest... it's not as if it's hard to find a smoking area. When I was smoking, I always found it relatively easy to walk over to one of the areas and light up. And while I'm sure some people looked at it as a punishment, I actually met several very nice people while "quarantined" in our little areas!

I think it depends on the CM whether they'll tell the offending smoker that it's a non-smoking area.

We have seen CM's politely but firmly tell smokers when they were smoking in the wrong area, and we also noticed some CM's that seemed too shy to speak up about it.

After our last trip, seeing and smelling my grand daughters hair burning because she got too close to a smoker who's red hot ciggy butt was dangling from their hand I will no longer hesitate to politely point out where smoking is allowed. It could have EASILY been her eye or her flesh that got burned and I'm sure it happens often, especially in a crowded place like a theme park.

as a smoker, it really bugs me that it is not enforced, but, I have adopted the attitude of just smoking where I am supposed to.
One of the reasons I like the smoking areas is because the chances of burns are much less this way. Personally, I think the entire MK should be smoke free, to many little ones.

I don't think MK should be smoke free...I just think that all smokers should obey the rules...I am a smoker and I ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS go to the smoking section to smoke. I think it is RUDE, NASTY, AND JUST PLAIN TACKY to smoke somewhere in the non designated areas.

It is just that those RUDE, NASTY AND TACKY smokers who DONT use the designated areas make us "responsible" smokers look bad.

And true, they are not hard to find. They are marked on the maps and me and my hubby have memorized them all. So no smoker should just light up anywhere. Use the AREAS!!

But do not ban smoking all together from the MK just because of little ones. That is what DESIGNATED areas are for. So the little ones don't have to be around it. (unless smoking parents have them there).

Just my 2 cents. :)

If you see someone smoking where they shouldn't be -- just point it out to a CM, they will enforce the rules. Albeit they may roll their eyes, like one CM did to me, but he did enforce it. I only squeal if they are in my personal space, otherwise I don't let it hamper my vacation.

When we were at MK two weeks ago, shortly after the fireworks, my DH asked a CM where is the closest "smoking area". The CM responded "it doesn't really matter, its close to park closing, don't worry about it". I told my husband that he really should just wait to we find a smoking area on the way out. I did not notice alot of people smoking in "non areas" but I did notice a few "non smokers" walking thru the smoking sections making comments and coughing (which I don't feel is right).

WARNING! WAY OFF-TOPIC! (But I'm not quite sure what is on topic here unless it is to complain about another inconsistent Disney policy and/or agree with the designated smoker area concept. Good for you HauntedMansionGeek, I'd say a grandaughter's hair on fire is reason enough to speak out. )

Did any of you know Walt Disney died of lung cancer?

Why does Disney sell tobacco at WDW resorts and Downtown Disney?

Smokers are bad. Well, maybe they aren't bad people, but they do bad things everyday, can we agree on that? They are not "responsible" for making my breathing air clean; they are not responsible for anything except their own death. They love their ciggy butts more than life itself! Should they be punished or imprisoned to teach them a lesson? Or do they already know it deep down inside? Smoking areas? We don't need no stinkin' smoking areas! Just don't smoke around other people who want to live, that's all! What part of that do you not understand?

Have a nice life. I didn't know what I was missing until I stopped. ::yes:: :yo-yo: ::MickeyMo :wave2:

Walt Disney died of lung cancer because he CHOSE to smoke, he was an adult, it is legal, his choice. Why does Disney sell cigs? Because there is a market for them and Disney caters to markets, they are a BUSINESS. No, smokers do no more bad things per day than non smokers. There is NO proof that smoking outside causes cancer nor does it pollute the air like automobiles, which is far worse. Smoking areas are put there to eliminate the outcries of folks who don't like smoke. If you don't like them, you need not go near them. Your choice and simple. What punishment or imprisonment do you think we already know? People who are using the smoking areas are not "smoking around other people who want to live".
Reborn smokers are the most vocal and also the most rabid anti smokers there are.
Smoking is a legal activity for adults, which part of that do you not understand?
FYI, they no longer sell cigs. in any of the parks.
And, anyone hurting someone with a cigarette should be more than a little ashamed of themselves, it is not pleasant to be burned and I hate to see anyone burned, especially a child.
A little more consideration for both sides, by both sides would be a great thing.

So you want play hardball? You may not realize it now, Gail, but you really don't have the first clue about how wrong you are. I just hope for your family's sake you live long enough to find out. Or maybe not. It may be better to die quickly from another cause. I feel sorry for you. You are imprisoned by your guilt and your mind and body are punished every day by your addiction. There is not one good reason to inhale tobacco smoke. Period. End of story.

Bill

I agree Gail, a little consideration by all parties (smokers and non-smokers alike) is the best all 'round solution with a topic like this.

When I put my grand daughters hair out, I was amazed to see so little concern on the part of the smoker....almost as if they thought I had lit her hair on fire or that I had pushed her INTO the glowing ember! LOL

But then, the parks are full of people who are rude in one way or another, whether it's blowing smoke in your face, or cutting in line..... I just ignore them and try to notice the people having fun instead.

I know the risks, I am an adult, I indulge in a legal activity, I follow the rules, I pay the taxes and am acutely aware of how we are scorned by the non smokers of the world. Please, save your pity, I really don't need it. My mind is fine, still scoring very high on IQ tests. You are correct, there is not one good reason for inhaling tobacco smoke. I don't need a reason, I do what I want.
And, I keep it away from non smokers.
I think when you quit smoking you lost a few other things, like compassion, understanding and gained a few others, like self rightous behaviour.
BTW, NOT everyone that smokes dies from it.

Had that been me that singed your gd's hair I would have gone nuts!!!! That is one of the reasons I like the smoking areas, accidents are diminished.

imma have to disagree with you on that. Smokers do not do bad things everyday. i find that to be extremely judgemental. If someone were to smoke then let them be... as long as they are smoking in a designated area...stay out of their way if you don't wanna breathe in that disgustingly poisoned air. No they shouldn't be punished or imprisoned. you really need to chill out perhaps go have a cigarette. haha. anyhoo. just my two cents. lighten up doode

You know I am always amazed how these smoking posts end up... I will not allow personal bashing and I do think it is leading to that.. if not already there.. so I am locking this thread, feel free to open it as a debate on the Debate Board and continue your discussion there.. this is not a planning thread for the Theme Park Board.. :D
