Smoking Ban

Who? That's not what I've been reading. Most people have been respectful of smokers in general. A few posts have not but I haven't seen a whole lot of judgement. People have been discussing the policy.

there have seen a few rude comments but overall I think people are just voicing their opinions. I think that if a certain rule doesn't affect you, people just don't care. On other threads people are up in arms because they can't use a specific brand of wagon/stroller. My daughter is an adult so it doesn't affect me so I really don't care. It will be nice to have a few less large strollers but I do feel bad for the people who it affects.

I agree. That post was in reference to an insulting post regarding people who drink.

That's a different thread and a rumor
I know. OP asked what other changes are coming as they mentioned the stroller stuff. FP is coming in one form or another. I realized this when we were at DLR the MaxPass started. DLP has it, I think China too.

My dad smoked at least a pack a day. I only smoke cigars so no issues not doing it in the parks. But when we used to goto Disney back in the day. He never smoked in the parks. He just chose not to. It’s really not an big deal to implement this rule. Cigarettes is not heroin. You can go from 0800 till later that night without one. You just have to choose that.
I’m not an anti smoking guy. But I don’t want to breath others smoke. Thankfully Disney is implementing this.

Going from 8:00 to the evening isn't a big deal to you because you don't smoke!! Is is a big deal to people who do.

I'm absolutely amazed by the amount of people who seem offended by this new rule and are changing their plans. My husband has verbalized his dislike but has also said he will just smoke less then. No big deal and he's a heavy smoker. I agree with the ban. I do think it will increase the number of rule breakers but the outrage and offense blows my mind.
Exactly. Just don’t smoke in the parks save it for later at resort or wherever. Folks like to throw the “that’s offensive” line out there when they don’t agree with something. I don’t care what anyone thinks or says about me. I just do my thing. And live life. I choose not to be offended by anything. It’s a choice to be offended the same as any other choice. Life is too short to get offended or whine about stuff.

I smoke cigars. So that kinda counts. Nicotine is in cigars also. But no inhaling. My dad cigarettes. It wasn’t an issue stopping while on vacation. He even commented it offset vacation cost a little to not do it. Lol
And no patches back then. I know tons of nurses that smoke. But they can’t on hospital property. They just go their 12 hour shift not doing it. Really not a big deal.
On a side note. I do smoke a cigar at the resort. But on a bench away from anyone.

I'll chime on as a smoker. (Although have been trying to quit, have gone a couple stints of 4-6 months in last few years. But enough about that.)

Generally I try to limit my smoking whenever I go to Disney because of the lack of smoking areas. Also my travelling family doesnt smoke so they dont enjoy having to walk half way across the park so I can indulge. I have also used nicotine patches on vacation so that I won't be tempted to grab a smoke).

Some of the smoking areas are so remote that I doubt it would infringe on any non smokers accidently walking through smoke.

(MAGIC KINGDOM) The one by Big Thunder Mountain was on the docks far removed from other non smoking guests. Now the one where they are building TRON could have intruded on people but since that walkway is now gone, I personally think they should have left the one by BTM Railroad. Also remember too Magic Kingdom, until recently, has pretty much been an alcohol free park. And generally people smoke more when they drink (IE Hollywood Studios and EPCOT).

(Hollywood Studios) The one by Tower of Terror was at a dead end that led to a gate that cast members used. No bathrooms or anything in that area and again no guests would just happen to walk there unless they were searching for a smoking area. But again the one by Muppets will now be a QUE for Star Wars Galaxy Edge so it would have been removed anyway.

EPCOT's smoking area is an exception. Both were in high traffic areas (NORWAY), International Gateway, and under monorail by The Land. However with all the festivals and World Showcase and the focus on ADULT BEVERAGES this park IMHO should atleast have 1 smoking area.

Animal Kingdom had one way back in the woods that was pretty remote.

They made the decision and everyone will have to live with it. As I said I was planning to use a patch for my upcoming trip anyway (hopefully this will be it this time).

But as others have said NOONE new will book a vacation now because Disney is smoke free. But some people will stop coming (or smoke in non designated areas). Which will DEFINETELY happen now. Especially at EPCOT.

Ill quote an example of a corporation trying to draw in NON SMOKERS and alienate SMOKERS that blew up in their face. REVEL Casino in Atlantic City NJ originally opened as a NON SMOKING casino. Only one in Atlantic City that did not allow smoking anywhere on the property. It was also the biggest and newest casino on the AC Boardwalk. Well it lasted about 2 years before it went belly up. People just went elsewhere. Its now called OCEAN RESORT AC and they allow smoking.

Now Im not saying people will stop coming to Disney but alienating SMOKERS is not a good business plan especially when you add ALCOHOL to the equation. Im sure they will lose some LOCALS who may opt to go to one of the other theme parks to drink and ride rides that still allow smoking.

It really is a big deal. Nicotine is as addictive as heroin. If it wasn't people would just stop knowing the health effects.

I disagree about being more addictive than heroin. As many people die from overdoses from heroin as they do from withdrawal. You won’t die from nicotine withdrawal. In 25 years as a paramedic and firefighter. I’ve never gone on a nicotine withdrawal issue. Because there isn’t any. The body doesn’t work that way. You may want it. But the lack of nicotine won’t hurt you. You can’t stop heroin cold turkey. Millions do cigarettes.

Just because you don't die when you quit or when you smoke it doesn't quantify how addictive it is.

Why are you minimizing the struggles people go through?
Nope. Just stating facts. We all have struggles.
I have mine as well. It wouldn’t bother me if someone gave their opinion about that.
Getting back to the subject. Good decision by Disney. Now if they just brought Toad back.
Another side note. Without hearing aids. I’m deaf. I chose to not make that an issue. Seeing kids die from disease or trauma is a struggle. But instead of going down a dark path. We deal with it. Just like coming back from the Middle East. Struggles is everywhere. We all have them. Just gotta deal with it. So going a day without smoking in the big scheme of things is small beans.

I'm sure that this will have no measurable negative effect on attendance at WDW.

I agree. I remember when they started banning smoking in restaurants & bars. All the dire predictions that it was going to put restaurants out of business, wait staff would lose money were proved very wrong. Revenues increased as more people preferred the smoke free environment & upkeep costs went down when businesses didn’t have to deal with residue from smoking.

I don’t think Disney is doing this to benefit guest health. I would bet it has more to do with their bottom line. Less to clean up, less repainting if areas aren’t covered in smoke residue, etc.

Personally, I am very happy with this change. Now if the Yacht Club would just move their designated area away from the walkway to Beach Club & the pool chairs........

Agreed Disney could ban fanny packs. Which they should. Lol
And it wouldn’t stop folks from going.

I completely get this...smoking affects those around you... forcing your choice on them in the air (v/s tobacco dip, etc). I’m a smoker, it’s my choice. It’s also my choice to keep my daughter away from being exposed... and others...especially children. That’s why when there, I would always stay in designated areas. Due to the majority, I understand and respect this decision... I’m just not sure it’ll reduce people trying to smoke in non designated areas closer to kids... and the litter of no proper disposal.

With how big the parks are, security, etc...This will work ONLY if ALL CM’s are extremely diligent... bc I actually see this encouraging people to “cheat” when/where possible...I also hope people who do so are kind to the sweet CM’s doing their job when they have to say something...bc I can see this putting an extra uncomfortable burden on a staff largely made of teens/college kids/young adults.
