Smoking Areas?

My DH has pretty bad asthma and I'm kinda concerned about cigarette smoke on the ship. Can anyone answer any of these questions?

I know that smoking is technically not allowed in the staterooms, does that seem to be enforced? Specifically, do the staterooms ever smell like smoke?

I know the verandahs and the ESPN club are smoking areas, is smoking allowed on the pool deck? Also, are the nightclubs or theaters smoking or not?

We have a navigator's verandah, hoping that the partial enclosure will minimize any problems with smoke drifting over from a neighbor's verandah - anyone who has had a navigator's verandah, do you ever smell smoke?

TIA!!!

No, I think that guests who smoke are pretty considerate about complying with the "no smoking in the staterooms" rule.

At the Adult and Family pools, yes. At the Mickey pool, no.

The theatres are non-smoking. The Promenade Lounge, Studio Sea, and Off Beat/Barrel of Laughs are non-smoking. Smoking is only allowed at the bar at Sessions/Cadillac Lounge. There is a smoking area at Rockin' Bar "D"/Wavebands, but the poor ventilation there makes the entire club, effectively, a smoking club.

Dave's description of DCL's smoking rules is completely accurate.

One of the major reasons that we've booked another DCL cruise is because DCL doesn't allow smoking in staterooms. In comparison, all the other major cruise lines, such as RCCL, Princess, Celebrity, Norwegian, Holland America and Carnival (except for the Carnival Paradise), allow smoking in any stateroom. There aren't even designated smoking and non-smoking rooms as one would find at hotels.

All indications are that these other cruise lines do a good job cleaning between passengers. If nobody has smoked in the stateroom for a few weeks, you should be fine. But if you're unlucky, you'll wind up in a stateroom previously occupied by chain smokers who disembarked a few hours before you embarked. That happened two my sister-in-law on the Radiance of the Seas. In her case, the cleaning crew tried so hard to clean the previous occupants' smoke odor that the room had a overpowering smell of cleaning products. They complained that this was unacceptable, so the cleaning crew spent the afternoon cleaning up the cleaning odor. After that, my sister-in-law was satisfied. I've also heard reports of smoke from a smoker's stateroom entering an adjacent stateroom through the ventilation system on some ships; that won't happen on DCL because all staterooms are non-smoking.

I wish that the Disney Magic's Rockin' Bar D were non-smoking and that one side of the exterior decks were non-smoking. Perhaps this will happen before our next cruise.

Actually there is one minor inaccuracy. Smoking is allowed in half of the seating area in the Cadillac Lounge, as well as at the bar.
As another person who is very sensitive to smoke, I must say that Disney is much better than Royal Caribbean. I was miserable for half of our cruise on Sovereign due to the inescapable smoke...ugh!! That ship absolutely reeked of it, and the walls were yellowed from years of exposure. In contrast, in 23 Disney cruises we've never smelled it in our stateroom. We've had chainsmoking verandah neighbors a couple of times, but that seems to be the exception rather than the rule. With a navigators verandah, you should have no trouble at all (that's another reason I like stateroo, 5650...you only have a neighbor on one side, and with the way the verandah is curved, you wouldn't have as much problem even if your neighbor did smoke. I used to hate walking across Deck 3 when smoking was allowed in the Promenade Lounge, which is not enclosed, but now Disney has made that a non-smoking area, so it's great! Even by the pools it's not very bad. The only area where I ever have a problem is Wavebands, as much of the non-smoking area has a smoking area behind it, and the ventilation is not very good in there. Mainly I just go there for the 70s party and avoid it at other times. When they hold the adult programming in its Magic counterpart, Rockin' Bar D, I wish they would declare it non-smoking during the presentation...the shows and movies are non-smoking so that wouldn't be much of a stretch.

I to like the non smoking on the DCL. I have asthma and am bothered by to much smoke. On both my cruises, I have not had any problems with the smoke. Most of the smokers hang around the rail on Deck 4 and 9, 10 and do seem to be pretty considerate of other people. I do chuckle in the morning when taking my 2 mile walk around Deck 4 you have all the walkers and joggers who are trying to maintain a healthy life style and then there are all the smokers hanging along the rail on the same deck.

We had a smoker beside us and sometimes when we went on our verandah their smoke blew over to us. I also noticed it at the adult pool. It bothers me more than my husband. I wouldn't say the smoke was a serious problem though.

Thanks! That's exactly why we choose Disney, it looked like our only non-smoking options were Disney or Carnival's Paradise & with Carnival's party reputation I wasn't too keen on that. Kind of a shame as my DH would really like to take an Alaska cruise someday, but with no non-smoking ships that go there.....oh well, maybe if DCL expands out to the west coast, they'll add an Alaska trip :)

All the staterooms are equipped with smokedetectors, so if anyone dares to smoke an alert is generated and safety crews storm to the cabin, because it may also be a real fire. It happened once during our last cruise, the Ship's Officer, whom we had the pleasure to dine with, told us that the stormed with fire extinguisher into the stateroom, but there wasn't any fire - just an embarassed smoker :)
My wife and me are the worst and most sensitive kind of nonsmokers: We are ex-smokers - And we never felt molested by any smokers aboard the ship.

Oh, that is GREAT, I can just imagine the look on that guy's face, too funny!! I am very glad to hear that Disney takes the no smoking so very seriously & I sincerely hope that anyone who might be thinking about lighting up in their stateroom reads that story and realizes how seriously that is taken!
