Smok'em if ya Got'em

would you still come to WDW if they banned smoking altogether and allowed smoking only outside the parks and in special designated areas of the resorts.

this is not intended to raise the blood pressure levels of the smokers i am just curious too see how many would stay away that is if anyone would stay away.

it seems that more and more places in public are becoming smoke-free zones.

I am a fairly light smoker, and am trying to cut back with the goal of quitting outright, but my DH has no intention of giving it up. We would absolutely not take any more family vacations to WDW if they entirely banned smoking. He'd be so cranky that I'd probably be trying to drown him in a fountain halfway through the first day. It would be justifiable homicide, trust me.

I'm not against non-smoking areas, I think it's fine, and I actually don't mind the smoking ban in NYC at all, it's rarely a problem to step outside anyway and is more courteous to the nonsmokers in restaurants and bars. Airports, I get a little kvetchy these days because very few major terminals have a smoking area that you don't have to re-clear security to use, but, that's just a hassle involved in travel if you need to get somewhere, I figure.

But a place like WDW is too huge to reasonably allow people to "go outside" to take a smoke break, and if they actually did something like that, they would not get any more of our vacation dollars. I don't mind finding a DSA if DH or I want to kick back and have a cig, but there's no way I could cost justify commuting a mile or so (think about how *big* the parks are!) four or five times a day to keep dearly beloved from having a nic fit on the teacup ride. If they did a full smoking ban, we'd be done with Disney completely.

You know, I honestly don't know what I would do if WDW banned smoking altogether.

I smoke...obviously, but not that much and always in the DSA's. I don't really like taking time out of enjoying Disney to smoke, so usually in a full day at the parks, I only stop for 2, maybe 3 cigarettes...so you might be wondering, why do I have any at all, why couldn't I go the whole day? -- Well, maybe I could, but I know if it was banned and I couldn't have any, I'd probably want one more...I know from experience that it's much easier for me not to smoke when I know I can and much harder not to smoke when I know I can't.

Anyway, I love Disney and honestly don't know what I would do or if I would go back if smoking was completely banned. I'd really have to think about it. I know for sure my dad and uncle would not go, no thinking about involved.

If Florida banned it, as they do in restaurants, I think I MIGHT feel differently, but I don't see that happening. Florida values it's tourist dollars waaaayyyyyy too much to pass such a law. Forget us Americans too, they know they would lose too much in international vistors. For all the hype about smoking....when it comes to money/loss of revenue, that will always win out.

I feel the exact same way...I love Disney World and all, but if they banned smoking in the parks completely, I dont know what I do. It's seems like when I'm in a place where there are designated areas to smoke in, I don't have the urge to smoke as much as I do when when there aren't any...It's like when they passed the law here in North Carolina about not being able to smoke on school property anymore.
I also have to say, I've seen a lot of people smoking in non-smoking areas also...but it's like that at all the theme parks I've been to. Especially at Busch Gardens, Williamsburg. It seems like people don't even know about the policies :confused3 Not meaning to start something here, but my family and I think it gives ALL smokers a bad image because of the fact that those few people who do it don't listen...

Disney doesn't ban smoking completely for one reason: a vacation can be stressful enough and someone who's forced to completely stop smoking for 10+ hours on top of the regular stress and heat can be a ticking bomb.

The smoking areas are definately out of the way and if the smokers abide by them, they don't hurt anyone.

I would be in favor of making much more of the resorts non-smoking. Many of the best rooms in the Poly are smoking. If a building is mixed, then all the smoking rooms will be on the top floor (so the smell doesn't rise to a non-smoking room).

:scared1: Sounds like they need something other than a vacation. :rotfl2:

Seriously...Let's not fool ourselves. Disney doesn't ban smoking because of the bottom line.

As a non smoker I would like to see the hotels on property become nonsmoking. It sure would make for a nicer stay then when you walk into a room and it smells of smoke and it sure would cost WDW less in upkeep. No more burnt holes in sheets and blankets.

I honestly believe this may be the way of the future anyway.
In my town there is no smoking inside any building (unless it is your own) and I believe that there is legislation coming to ban smoking in cars if there are children inside.....they need to save all those little lungs.

I don't see Disney banning smoking outdoors besides DSA because of their international following.

I was just making a comment to my husband how I never see anyone outside of DSA smoking at Disney and then here is this thread. Sorry to hear that it is a problem for some.

Sort of OT but how is it legally permissable to pass a law against smoking in your own car? Aren't automobiles considered private property? The only way I can image that being legally feasible to ban smoking while driving under a distracted driving law, but the above law mentioned to ban smoking when children in cars just seems sketchy.

(Not that I am AT ALL for smoking around children, but private property is private property, no?-- Not sure how those laws apply in Canada however)

This hasn't been a problem for a long time. The only request that Disney will promise they'll honor is a request for a non-smoking room.

:) I mentioned this on a thread a while back, and got slammed for it. I don't think that people who have limited experience with smoking/ smokers realize the addiction part of smoking and the way that it affects moods. I agree that it is a choice to smoke, but the withdrawals are crazy. Can you imagine roughly 1/4 of the adults at WDW all having a nic fit at the same time? :earseek:

If you are having a nicotine fit there is nicotine gum for that. Sorry no excuse.

I have noticed stinky people in the parks as well - who hasn't.....the difference is you cannot get burned or have an allergic/asthmatic reaction from a person with BO. If they go into the pool...yes it's very gorss, but there is a barrier of thousands of gallons of water and chlorine. Smoking is a gross wasteful, deadly EXPENSIVE habit. If you added up all the money you spend on cigs per year, you would be able to afford another vacation....but that is just a point to think about, not a lecture.

I realize that smoking is not an easy habit to break, but it's not like smokers (that don't abide by the DSA rules) don't affect others....they do in many different ways.

Being dirty and smelly and non smoking is very different than clean and smoking. What makes you think a smoker does not "smell" (regardless of where they smoke)- UGHHH...that's just as gross.

I think that statement was just grasping at straws.

So is NJ. They're talking right now about banning smoking in your own car!

I would love that for one, I hate having to roll up windows in traffic in order to not be subjected to the smoke!

Im way far back in this thread, so this might have already been mentioned...
I think the law for not smoking in your car is because of the "keep two hands on the wheel" rule, just like they are banning cell phone usage (unless you have a hands free device)

I don't know what they will do about eating in your car, drinking a soda, putting on makeup.,....LOL

Ok, thanks for the opinion! :flower:

Nice attitude, but incorrect. Nicotine gum is not good for people with dental problems, which is why I don't use it. Obviously you've never tried it, and that's fine, but it's not really like a stick of gum that you pop in your mouth- the texture is quite different from normal chewing gum and it can be tough to chomp on and can cause some pretty harsh jaw pain for people with TMJ, etc. And since we're all playing "let's get out the rulebook" anyway, did you forget that the Disney parks don't allow gum?

Actually in the suburb that I live in you can get a ticket for that for "distracted driving". A few years ago a woman pulled out of McDonalds, and while driving, began passing food to her children in the backseat. She got pulled over and ticketed for being a distracted driver and not fully paying attention to the road.

And if you have dentures, forget it..

Of course if you DO use the nicotine gum and it somehow ends up on someones shoe, then you're going to have to listen to all of the whining about that.. LOL

Wow, that is interesting...Im always interested in laws that different states have, some are funny (this one isn't but some are)

Also, I wanted to tell you, I LOVE Your pic in your siggy, which resort was that, and was there a special occasion?

Guess they better get rid of all the radios, cd players, switches for a/c and heat, etc.. Terribly distracting and requires the use of one hand..

Do you mean to say that as a smoker and a nicotine gum chewer, you also have a hard time finding a trash can to throw it away in?? I can see why you smoke and rationalize it, you can come up with a million excuses.

There are nicotine lozenges espically made for people who cannot tolerate gum and nicotine patches....the gum was an example.

Who said they were a smoking, nicotine gum-chewer having a hard time finding a trash can? Assumptions are equally as bad as rationalizations.. I merely pointed out that "some" gum-chewing smokers might not care one way or the other - you know, the same ones that don't use the DSA's.. But you pretty much proved my point with your assumption - all smokers are clumped together as one, whether they follow the rules or not..
