Smoke Free Night Club on the Magic

Forty pages of comments, Wow! Wish I'd been around for that! Even with the changes that are occurring in our culture, I always feel like a bit of a whiner when I start to talk about smoke-free environments. But what I'm finding is that even my smoking friends (and family) don't really mind going someplace smoke-free - they'll just pop out for a bit, take a few puffs, and pop back in. And we can then all enjoy what ever it is we went to see or do!

I vote smoke free too.

I would love to visit the adult venues late in the evening but am drivien out most nights by the smoke.

On our recent cruise my parents, my 18yr old nephew and myself all avoided the clubs because of the smoke smell. Went in 1 time and the smell was in my clothes from just a short stay.
Wish I knew the coffee place was smoke free. I saw it described as a place to smoke cigars so strayed clear!!

The Cove Cafe on the Magic sells cigars, but you can't smoke them inside the cafe. The Cove Cafe has a full bar, including a large menu of specialty coffees with alcohol.

Really, there's no problem getting bar beverages in smoke free lounges. The Cove Cafe and the Promenade Lounge are both very nice.

The big problem, as far as I'm concerned, is that the best entertainment venue on the ship -- Rockin' Bar D -- allows smoking, and that the smoke spreads from the smoking section into the rest of the room. It seems unfair to exclude smoke-sensitive adults from enjoying the nighttime cabaret entertainment in Rockin' Bar D. (And before someone responds that it would be unfair to exclude smokers, allow me to point out that I would only like to see smoking, not smokers, prohibited in Rockin' Bar D.)

As a nurse, I have a question regarding all the sinus "infections" that are caused by smoke. To me, infections are caused by either a virus or a bacteria?? Maybe I need a doctor to explain it to me.

LOL, but of course, smoke would be iritating and the iritation would make it easier for any infection to take hold. Kind of like having an open sore - it isn't likely for a closed scab to get infected, but an open sore -

its also possible the bacteria and viruses choose to "ride" the smoke and that it becomes a carrier for infections that wouldn't travel nearly as far simply airborne.

I'm not a doctor, however.

The Prominade Lounge does have good entertainment. Studio Sea is another non smoking spot (i.e. family nightclub), although the teen crowd often takes it over. If you want to dance after 9:00, you are pretty much stuck in someplace where you will get second hand smoke - although you could try the deck parties, smoking allowed, but its outside.

I too would **love** no smoking all around but know that'll never happen. :(

Sending an email to help with the "comments from the masses".

Thanks for this thread! princess:

The other venue where smoking is unfortunately allowed is where they play bingo. I tried going twice, but by the end of the games I could not breath! It was overwhelming in there with all the smokers!

I think what frustrates me about SOME smokers is that they can't go one hour without a cigarette. [And don't flame me -- I was a former smoker. I can't, however, compare myself to that though because I used to go 2-3 hours between cigarettes -- I wasn't a chain smoker.] I sat near some people last time in the club that as soon as they put out a cigarette, lit up another one!

Anyway, I don't want to start another thread like we had last time, which ended up getting really nasty and they closed it down. But it is frustrating to be constantly "run out" of these clubs because you physically cannot breath (I have ashtma).

My new suggestion to DCL would be -- instead of making the new club nonsmoking -- and one lounge nonsmoking, why don't they make all the clubs nonsmoking and give the smokers a smoking club (like Cove Cafe). That way they would have a nice venue to go to which offers drinks and a view, but we could still go to the after hours clubs and shows in clean air!

So, keep writing those letter -- I think snail mail is a lot more effective than email.

When was this? Which ship?

I thought that bingo on the Magic is played in afternoon in Rockin' Bar D or the Walt Disney Theatre (depending on the day) -- and that Rockin' Bar D is non-smoking until 9:00 p.m. and the Walt Disney Theatre is always non-smoking.

(It was different on our first Disney cruise in 2002, when Rockin' Bar D always allowed smoking by the bar and across the entire back of the room.)

HORACE: Is it true?????

Did they really make the Rockin D a nonsmoking room during the day??? My reference was to our last cruise in November 2002. Have they since put limits in there?

That would be the best news to be able to go in there during the day with no smoking!!!

Thanks for the info.

Yes. We cruised on the Disney Magic in spring 2002 and spring 2004. In 2002, smoking was allowed all day in Rockin' Bar D. In 2004, smoking was allowed only after 9:00 p.m. in Rockin' Bar D.

Hey, they are listening!!! That is GREAT news. Now I can actually enjoy the day activities in there. Thanks for that wonderful piece of news.

I'm glad some people can enjoy daytime activities. Unfortunately, as an allergy sufferer, I can't get in the door of any of the 'smoking lounges' without coughing and wheezing. It doesn't matter that no one is currently smoking in the room. The leftover stench from the night before is enough to start a full blown allergic reaction.

Here's a copy of the email I sent to customer relations this past weekend.......and the reply I received today:

To Whom it May Concern,

While I understand and respect Disney Cruise Line's policy of allowing smoking in the cruise ship nightclubs after 9 PM, I felt that I had to tell you how disappointed I am with this policy. I suffer from severe allergies to cigarette smoke and cannot enter any of the following venues because of the lingering 'stench' left from the night before:

WaveBands
The Cadillac Lounge
Barrel of Laughs

I would love to be able to sit down to a nice game of bingo in WaveBands. Unfortunately I can't even walk in the door without coughing and wheezing. The same goes for Barrels of Laughs.... a nice comedy club visit would be wonderful, but it's totally out of the question; I walk into the door and begin to cough.

Since these venues also have many daytime family activities scheduled, I'm assuming that Disney believes that it is fine to subject children and non-smoking adults to second-hand smoke. Again, as an allergy sufferer, I have to disagree.

Would the Disney Cruise Line possibly consider a compromise that would satisfy both the smokers and non-smokers on the ships? Would it be possible to make ONE of the three clubs into a Non-Smoking venue and rotate the shows through all three clubs. This would afford non-smokers, whether by choice or due to health issues, a chance to enjoy ALL of the adult shows over the course of a 3 or 4 day cruise. While I know the logistics of this suggestion might pose some difficulties, I think this addresses the concerns of both camps, smokers rights and non-smokers rights.

Thank you for taking the time to consider my grievances and I hope you will take my suggestions into consideration.

I don't want to start a flame war between smokers and non-smokers as that wasn't the purpose of my email. I would like to be able to enjoy all that a Disney Cruise has to offer for adults though, especially since I have no children to worry about at night. The fact that Disney has compromised by restricting smoking to evening hours does not help people who have health related issues with cigarette smoke enjoy ALL adult entertainment. Nor does it remove children from the presence of second-hand smoke. The lingering odor of stale cigarette smoke cannot be removed from a room just by limiting the amount of time people are permitted to smoke indoors. The only way to remove the odor is to remove the source of the odor.

I don't think that requesting one of the three clubs be designated as non-smoking is asking too much, especially if they can figure out some way to rotate the shows between all three clubs. Of course since I've never had the opportunity to experience any of these shows, maybe my idea wouldn't be possible. Oh well, it never hurts to ask.

just emaled the guest communication of dcl listed on pg 1 of this thread. reqested a reply and will let you know what they said.

Oh, I didn't realize this! I was thinking of trying Bingo on our upcoming 7 night. I will just skip it then. We have never been to any of the adult night time entertainment because of the smoke. I figure it does save us money (we would buy drinks if we went). We try going to the movies instead (but of course there isn't always a good one playing).

It would be nice to be able to attend those shows sometime. Maybe sometime Disney will make night time adult shows available for non-smokers also.

O/T - just curious about this.

Every time I send an email to DCL its “Tracey from Guest Communications” that responds.

Every time someone posts a reply they got from DCL it is also Tracey that responded.

The responses are often pre-written statements that come close to the topic I've written about, but don't really address my question or comment.

So - is "Tracey" a real person???

Anyone know?

No, read Horace's response to my comment! As of last year, they have stopped allowing smoking in these clubs until 9 p.m.! So bingo and any day activities will be smoke free (the stench may still linger, but at least there will be no active smoke).
