I've been reading about all of the changes on the DM and now I'm starting to get worried. With The Dueling Piano room turned into a Sports Club, are there any smoke-free night clubs for adults? It sounds like the Coffee Cove will be a smoking venue, too. I hate having to ask, but know from experience that I can't just "grin and bear it". I have really bad reactions to cigarette smoke - I've almost had to have tubes put into my ears - my sinuses were so backed up & refused to drain and they were afraid it would damage my hearing. And the headaches!!!!! Its a quick way to ruin a vacation.

So I loved the dueling pianos (and other stuff in that nightclub) because I could feel like a "normal" adult out for a night on the town.

Atthe sport's bar there was only smoking allowed at the bar counter itself...no where else was it allowed...It never bothered me and I'm pretty sensitive to smoke...I also believe there is no smoking at the Coffee Cove...outside, but not inside. Another nice place to hang out without the kids.

I think there may be smoking in the Cove Cafe on the Magic...but not 100% sure.

I'm with you about the whole getting sick thing. I have been on Disney 3 different cruises and 1 Carnival, Carnival was much worse and ended up sick with a sinus infection before I got off the ship. Thank God I had an antibiotic with me that the doctor prescribed because they know how sick I get. Also the Air conditioning has a lot of affect on how sick I get. But the smoke is the worst. Wish it was all non-smoking.

This will sound horrible to say, but its oddly reassuring to know that I'm not alone! Thank you! And I agree, a sinus infection on vacation is the pits! One cruise, I spent the better part of a day in bed with a sinus migraine because I made the mistake of going to Rock'n Bar D to dance the night before. Last cruise I avoided Rock'n Bar D, and hung out in Offbeat instead and had a great time.

Unfortunately, I just contacted DCL and according to them, there will be smoking in all of the Beatstreet clubs after 9pm, and she thinks in the Coffee Cove, too. I do wish they didn't have smoking in the club areas! Guess I'll have to save up for the poolside parties!

I got a raging sinus infection on Sovereign of the Seas from the smoke. It's an older ship, and because RCCL doesn't have many restrictions on smoking, you could see how yellowed all the interior walls had bcome. Ugh!!

Disney is one of the best lines for non-smokers, but I'm sorry to hear that there is smoking in the coffee cafe. I was looking forward to being a frequent visitor, but that's crossed off my list now. The only time I brave the nightclubs is for 70s Night and Match Your Mate because that's about all the smoke I can take (many of the non-smoking areas are directly adjacent to smoking and the ventilation is poor). I wish that Wavebands/Rockin Bar D would be non-smoking during all shows, but no such luck.

DCL does listen to guests and makes changes based on our comments. I would suggest that those of us who object to smoking and who choose not to frequent the clubs for that reason continue to make our concerns known to DCL--fill out the comment card, write letters to Guest Relations, etc. It can't hurt, and maybe eventually we'll get a minuscule smoking section in the clubs or NO SMOKING at any indoor venue on the Magic!!!

Am I dreaming?????

I hate to say this (I am a non smoker), but cruise ships will continue to cater to the smoking crowd. I was just on the Carnival Paradise which has been a non-smoking ship since it was built. It was WONDERFUL to not smell any smoke anywhere! Unfortunately, it will become a smoking ship when it makes it reposition to the West Coast this fall. The official reason given by Carnival is that it is the only one of their ships that gets poor comment cards. I have been on 3 Carnival ships, and I saw very little difference. When I talk to the cruise staff, I was told the true reason is that the Paradise is not bringing in enough revenue. It seems that smokers spend more money on alcohol and on gambling (I know Disney doesn't have a Casino). In fact, their research showed smokers spend more money in general on ships.

When I spoke to the CM on the phone, she was quite helpful and suggested that I write to Guest Relations and suggest a smoke-free night club. Turns out she also has troubles with the smoke.

She gave me the postal and email addresses:

Disney Cruise Vacations
Guest Communitcations
P.O. Box 10238
Lake Buena Vista, FL 32830

dcl.guest.communications@disneycruise.com

(In case anyone wants to add their two cents) :)

Also, a local paper just did a major expose on the smoking ban in California's (and several other state's) night clubs, and how it actually hasn't hurt, but rather improved business in total numbers. I'm going to mail them a copy of the article!

Wouldn't it be nice to have at least one smoke-free nightclub? My dream is for a smoke-free interior, but I'd settle for one nightclub!

I agree. Smoking makes me sick as well. Thanks for the info. I'll send an e-mail right away.

One nice thing you can't smoke in the rooms on DCL, the hallways on Carnival Victory smelled terrible of smoke. I know you can smoke on the verandahs and you can smell them from one to another because we have always had a verandah and have smelled it. At least no smoking in the rooms, dining rooms, but I do enjoy the clubs and steer clear of the smokers, but it is still in the air. Oh well, maybe some day things will change. We love NY no smoking law too.

I e-mailed DCL last night about their smoking policy, and got this stock reply this morning:

Thank you for your e-mail.

For the comfort and enjoyment of our guests, the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder have been primarily designated as non-smoking ships. However, we recognize that some of our guests smoke. Therefore, to provide an onboard atmosphere that also satisfies smokers, we have designated smoking areas in Beat Street/Route 66 lounges, all open-air decks, and on private verandahs. Disney Cruise Line asks all guests to please observe the non-smoking areas and to refrain from smoking pipes and/or cigars in any of the public areas. These requests are made to provide a comfortable shipboard living atmosphere for everyone. We hope these efforts demonstrate that we have addressed our non-smoking guests' needs as while as providing options for our adult guests who want to smoke. Your comments will be shared with the appropriate management teams.

We look forward to the chance to sail with you.

Sincerely,

Tracey, Guest Communications
Disney Cruise Line

I hope the lounges aren't too smokey. We leave tomorrow for our 7/10 Eastern cruise and I was hoping to visit the nightclubs.

DH and I were on the 6/19 Magic. I came down with a sinus infection Saturday morning. Can't argue with the timing, if it had to happen.

As it turned out, we didn't spend time in the clubs, so I can't speak for the smokiness. We were in the Promenade lounge a few times, and I didn't notice smoke. It's largely open to the passageway, so they may not allow it there.

In the evening, we went into the Cove Cafe for our drinks (coffee variations, alcoholic, or coffee with alcohol:) ) and took them outside.

The evening of the first at sea day, with the ship moving through the water, and the wind in our hair, was really wonderful.

The interior of the Cove Cafe on the Disney Magic is 100% nonsmoking all the time. Not ony were there no ashtrays, but I specifically asked.

There are some tables with ashtrays right outside the Cove Cafe.

The Promenade Lounge is non-smoking. All bars are non-smoking before 9:00 p.m.

Cool!

And do they have fun activites in the evenings at either of these by any chance? Hoping! :)

While we were on the Magic in April, we asked at the Coffee Cove about smoking and we were told that smoking is only allowed at the outdoor tables on deck. Inside is non smoking.

As a nurse, I have a question regarding all the sinus "infections" that are caused by smoke. To me, infections are caused by either a virus or a bacteria?? Maybe I need a doctor to explain it to me.

ImNarek Thank you for providing the address. As others can attest, I have been a BIG advocate on previous postings for letter writing. No matter what stock answer you may receive, they still read your comments and if enough are received, serious changes may be made.

There was a BIG thread a couple of months ago about smoking vs. non-smoking. It ended up being over 40 pages. I actually printed out all of the comments, cut and pasted each and every comment (being sure to leave out commentor's names and tags, etc.) and sent it to Disney with a letter asking them to seriously consider all of the negative comments about smoking on the ship. Haven't heard back yet, but hope that it overwhelms them with concern (ha ha).

Anyway, keep those letters going out -- it doesn't hurt and only costs 37 cents!

The smell of smoke really bothers me like many people. On our last DCL cruise, my friend and I were looking for a blender drink. The only place we could get one was from places that were smokey. We grabbed a waiter, placed an order, and asked for it to be delivered out in the hallway. We were even wondering if we picked up a phone if we could have gotten room service to deliver to us in the hall? It was a thought.
