Smoke Free Cruise

We booked our cruise--and NEVER even thought about the possibility of being terrorized by someone's second-hand smoke!!!
We booked a verandah----I will be VERY unhappy if a smoker is on either side of us......I hate it when people smoke walking through the parks---and that's outside!!! How is it on a cruise--sitting by the Micky Mouse Pool???? Maybe if we NON-SMOKERS would speak up--and politely ask the person smoking to kindly put their cigarette out--maybe that would help. I am planning on doing just that. Most of the time they will do it--some give you a dirty look---but do it anyway...with a bad attitude.
I am shocked to learn that Disney allows this....but there is a lot about Disney that goes on that would shock us if we knew!!!!
Well----I think if we ask the person to extinguish---it would help tremendously---ESPECIALLY in areas where there are children.
They should also have a smoke-free club--so people who dance the night away don't have to suffer...
We might just bring an ionic air cleaner from Sharper Image to put out on our verandah---wonder if that would help??? Or we could just spray Lysol towards the smokers---would they get the hint??!!!

I didn't see anyone smoking by the Mickey Pool in two cruises. It is the Goofy Pool you have to worry about. (and the adult pool although kids aren't allowed there and I assume you are talking about you familiy) There is smoking allowed there.

What is the difference between the mickey and goofy pools? Why would one have more smokers than the other? I understand that the adult-only pool would have smokers---but what is the goofy pool? pool clarification needed please!!!

Findingnemofan: Walking around the parks smoking is not allowed. There are designated smoking areas in all of the parks.
There is at least one club on board that is non-smoking. I could be wrong on this, but I think smoking is not allowed near the Mickey pool. On the verandahs, the wind creates somewhat of a vortex, and most of the smoke stays in one place, rather than blowing away, or next door. I'm thinking spraying Lysol could be construed as using a weapon against someone who is completely within their legal rights. As far as asking someone to put their cigarette out, if they are in a designated smoking area, again, they are within their rights, and have no obligation to do so.
Again, no one in my family smokes (in fact, my DH hates it as much as anyone here) but none of us has a right to make someone stop if they are doing it where it is allowed.
What ever happened to The Happiest Place On Earth?
I think the idea of having one side of the ship designated as smoking and the other as non is a great idea.

The Mickey pool has a big slide, and is more for littler kids, the Goofy pool is the "family" pool.

I know that walking the parks smoking is not allowed--but that doesn't stop people from doing it!!!! LOL You are correct about spraying the lysol onto their verandah--that would be wrong---but we would be perfectly within our rights if we didn't want our verandah---and the air immediately outside of it to smell of smoke---to spray it out directly--straight out the verandah.....
BTW ---having never been on a cruise---are you able to see your neighbors sitting on their verandahs? Hear every word they are saying? How do they actually look? Plexiglass? Could someone fall overboard??
I think if someone is smoking in a non-smoking area---you would be in your right to ask them to put it out.....especially if you suffer from asthma--or are sensitive to the smell....people are generally good about that....

Findingnemofan: My DH is really good at telling people to stop when they are not in a smoking area!
On the verandah, you can hear your neighbors....ours shouted alot! You can't see them, nor they see you, unless you lean way out and around the solid dividers. If one did this, they would risk falling overboard. Still, I would not go out there naked!
The railings are wood, and below them, there is plexiglass to the floor. Yes, someone could fall over, if they sat on the rail, or stood on a chair....but not under normal circumstances. I have a fear of heights/falling, but was very comfortable out there.

Can I borrow your Lysol.....only for the out-and-away??

I just have to add my 2 cents into this one as there seems to be a lot of emotion on this subject on these boards.

I agree with Justmestace 100%. Whatever happened to "Tolerance" & "Compromise". I do hope, however, that Disney is listening...and creates a "smoking-area of rooms" (most likely at the aft of the ship) that would, hopefully, please everyone. I don't smoke..but unfortunately DH does. Trust me...he is not a hatchet murder, a pedofile or a drug dealer!! He's a wonderful individual and a very courteous smoker (doing something that is completely legal!) that never intentionally causes others discomfort. We are paying in excess of $600 more for our cruise so he can smoke in the privacy of his own area for 3 days...but there's always going to be one of you to find some way to complain!! And trust me....if you point that Lysol can over my railing....there WILL be problems.

If ya'll are that worried about smoke...go on the Paradise. (They've even had to lower their rates because they can't fill the ship!)
There are plenty of Non-Smoking areas on the ship...bars included....go enjoy them!! And let everyone have a good time! And Good Lord...now I have to worry about talking too loud on the verandah too!!

Whew---I would HOPE that you knew I would not intentionally lean over and spray Lysol!!!! Just a JOKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But if my verandah smells because of cigarette smoke----and because I have asthma----I would definitely be SO within my rights to spray my verandah!!!!!!!!! agreed?
If someone thinks that people with asthma "complain"--because their throat closes off because of heavy nearby cigarette smoke---they have a problem. Period.

I am sure 95% of smokers are courteous---but these boards are NOT the place to make threats of any kind....

I'm sorry if you misconstrued what I said to be a "threat"...it was more of an over-reaction to your reference to "terrorism" and the alledged "lysol-attack". I whole-heartedly understand an asthmatic epidose....however....mine would be caused by you bathing in your perfume!! Burning lungs and nose, tearing eyes & throat swelling. Unfortunately, I can't ask you to take it off or do it in an approved area. I also can't do a thing about the woman in the department store who runs up and sprays perfume samples on you as you walk thru the store! (One landed me in the hospital for 3 days).
One more (non-confrontational) point...and then lets put this thread back on the friendly tone it should be !!!
Smokers are NOT the root of all your evils! You are pumping your family with fermaldihyde(sp?) every morning they brush their teeth...you wash their hair with cancer-causing SLS in your shampoos...your softening their connective tissues by cooking with meat tenderizers...and I won't even get into the toxic chemicals you are breathing (and...yes...the putrid smells) of the perms, hair colors and acrylic nail supplies when you go to the beauty shop....and on...and on...and on...! I work for the local Health Dept and if only half of the public hazards were as publicized as smoking.....you would find many issues to be more "outraged" about !!!

Findingnemofan...I hope your cruise is enjoyable for you and your family and that it is not "ruined" by an inconsiderate smoker. You would be well within your rights to ask one to move to the designated area if they were not doing so....hopefully in a non-confrontational, adult manner. (perhaps they just don't know where that area is). I have been on several cruises with verandahs...and have never been overcome by smoke from a neighbor...you should not have a great problem.
Bottom-line is...Disney (and all cruise lines) need to make some simple changes (as were suggested here) to protect everyone's rights.

Yes. I've smelled smoke of the non-cigarette kind on my verandah before. It was on our first cruise and I was SHOCKED to say the least!

I guess emotions do run high on these issues----ESPECIALLY at 2 in the morning--when I was up making the goodie bags for my son's birthday party....I shouldn't have used the word "terrorized"--that is a little extreme---but "bacrd"---you must feel similarly when a woman sprays you with perfume that triggers that kind of reaction!!! Yikes---my MIL is the same way about perfume--but doesn't get as bad a reaction....
Thank you for your good wishes for our cruise--I wish the same for you ...May smokers and non-smokers live happily ever after--because at Disney--there is ALWAYS a happy ending!!

I voted for 100% smoke-free, but I know that's just a dream. I'm a non-smoker, always have been and always will be. I am the child of two heavy smokers who died too young of smoking-related disease. No one in my family smokes, and I allow no smoking in my home or on any property that I control. As a result of being raised with smokers, I have asthma, and I'm seriously allergic to many things. Cigar smoke triggers intense migraines, which can leave me unable to do anything for two or three days, even with medication.

I don't go to restaurants without acceptable non-smoking areas, I don't go to bars and clubs, I don't even go to many parties or weddings if I will be bothered by the smoke. The consequences just aren't worth it.

I did think that my cruises on Wonder were fairly good with regard to people observing the smoking regulations. I use an inside room because I don't want to pay for a verandah I can't use if the rooms on either side of me are occupied by smokers. I would like to see all of the clubs and interior spaces, as well as all pool and other recreational areas entirely non-smoking. I think that's realistic. If there absolutely has to be an exterior smoking area, it should be all the way aft on Deck 10 (the uppermost deck). There are ways to avoid that area entirely. Edited to add--these rules must be strictly enforced, with severe penalties for those who break them. I'm not certain that fines could be imposed, but it would be possible to ban them from future cruises! If Disney wants to keep its non-smoking and considerate smoking populations happy and returning to their cruise ships, this may be the only alternative.

I'm not sure whether smokers have a legal "right" to smoke, or if it's just one of those things that's legal but not a guaranteed right. However, I also have as much "right" not to have to breathe smoke at all. There can be compromise on this issue. Smokers can smoke in enclosed areas, with their own ventilations systems which vent directly to the outside, away from any other occupied areas. That's fine with me. They can smoke in designated outdoor areas where non-smokers won't be affected in any way. That's also fine with me. However, I don't have a choice whether or not I want to breathe. Someone's "right" to smoke (or to pollute the air we all breathe in any other way) ends where my (and everyone else's) necessity to breathe begins.

Some smokers have continued to not follow the rules and that is why the non smokers get soooo upset over this issue. It wouldn't make any difference if Disney had designated areas for smokers. There would always be those who would break the rules and if you are non smoker allergic to smoke the only rule good enough is NO SMOKING. Maybe if all the other smokers would start getting after all the smokers who break the rules then maybe us non smokers might have a chance.

Agian some smokers thought they would break the rules on our trip to wdw a few years ago and walked around the park smoking. When we complained NOTHING was done. If everyone is suppose to meet in the middle how come soooo many smokers don't.

Do you know what it would take to come remotely close to getting lung cancer from second-hand smoke? There are way too many other carcinogens out there to worry about than second hand smoke.
I cannot get back on any kind of shuttle transportation without feeling sick at the memory of a ride from Disneyland to the airport with a family of about seven people would had apparently not bathed during their entire vacation, but instead kept dousing themselves with more and more perfume and cologne.
There are always going to be alot of things that other people do that irritate us, but we do have to be tolerant.
Again, I think the idea of having the ship having say, starboard side smoking and port side not is a good idea. Sending all the smokers to the back of the bus, oops, I mean ship, is reminiscent of days gone by. Dividing it half and half would give every an opportunity to enjoy every type of stateroom, such as the suites.

I was certainly not implying that they should be "sent to the back of the ship". With the ship moving in a forward direction, smoke from the aft part of the decks will trail behind the ship, therefore not imposing on anyone at all. Dividing the ship in half will mean smoke in the ventilation system. Not at all an acceptable alternative to those of us who have real, diagnosed medical conditions. Those of us who have these conditions must express our approval or disapproval with our dollars. If the smoking situation gets out of hand on DCL ships, then I will cruise elsewhere.

I was so excited about our Verandah on our upcoming cruise and now this thread has me crossing my fingers that there are no smokers near our room. It's too much money to have to put up with a smoker upwind from us. I want to be able to enjoy the fresh air, not someones cig or cigar smoke. I like the idea of a block of rooms for smokers only towards the back of the ship maybe on one side only.

I will cross my fingers for you. The verandah is wonderful and you will enjoy it if you don't have smokers near you.

When we book hotel rooms we always book the non smoking ones. On our last cruise we had an inside room and we could tell that the people who had our stateroom before us were smokers. If Disney does someday have non smoking rooms I hope they have inside rooms as well. I hope they were not smoking in the room but it sure smelled like they did.
