I found the coolest metal chairs out by our dumpster today. So I dragged them in and relized that they smelled. Kinda a smokey, stale smell. There out on my deck right now, but the problem is they still stink. I am smell sensitive and fabreeze is not an option. Any ideas?

Is there fabric on them somewhere? I'm not sure how metal could smell... You're doing the right thing keeping them out in the sun. Maybe powerwash them?

Dish soap, vinegar, and baking soda. Mix it up, scrub the chairs with a brush and the solution. Give them a good rinse and let them dry in the sun.

You may need to repeat, but usually that mixture works for just about anything.

Yes, you need to clean the metal also. My very first car was owned by a smoker. You would not believe the stuff that came off of every hard surface in the interior. Went through many rags and paper towels. Just keep cleaning it until your water or rag is clean.

Gross stuff that cigarette smoke & tar.

Fabric I would replace. Same for any cushion materials. And if its really bad, any wood under the seat portion may also smell & would need to be replaced if you are that sensitive to smells.

At this rate, you might decide to just bring them back to the dumpster. ;)

Im planning on replacing the fabric and stuffing. I have the suplies already. Im hoping the wood isnt too gross (havent looked yet). Didnt think of cleaning the metal (dumb of me). Theres no way there going back to the dumpster, there very cute chairs and a million times better than what I have already.

Well with the replacement of the padding and material, I think it would be safe to save. And if you are handy with power tools, replacing the wood might not be that expensive. Plus you can save some hassle by buying the 2ftx2ft pieces rather than the large 8x4 sheet.

I've seen advertisements for a paint that is supposed to help get rid of smells? It's an interior paint. I'm not sure WHY the paint is so special. It always seemed to me that the new paint smell pretty much replaced all others...

Just curious...take some before and after pictures for us?:flower3:

Use KILZ paint on the wood and that will get rid of any smell. We had a house fire and they even used Kilz on the trusses of the roof.

My mom swears by Odoban for smoke smells and nicotine stains. I think it has a scent but you could rinse it off after.
