Smells Pumped into Rides?

I, nor my family have been to WDW before so I'm pretty clueless here, forgive me if this is a silly question. I've read on a couple of different sites that some of the rides have smells pumped into them, like Soarin', Spaceship Earth and Philharmagic. Are these smells super strong, or are they just kind of faint hints of smell? My grandmother has COPD and will have coughing fits if she's trapped in an area with really strong smells, like Bath and Body Works, for example. Do you think these rides will be bothersome to her?

I have asthma and smells are a problem for me but nothing in Disney has ever caused me to have a problem they are faint smells

Awesome, I want her to be able to experience everything, so that's good news! :)

Bugs Life and Imagination have the same smell. It is brief but strong. The dialog tells you when to tuck your nose in a cloth hanky for a few seconds. The others are no problem for me and pleasant in Soarin.

Thank you! Good to know that they warn you. She carries a rescue inhaler, just in case, but I would feel horrible if she got sick because I didn't check into it.

Oh, yeah, I totally forgot about Journey into Imagination! Now, that smell doesn't trigger my asthma or chemical sensitivity, either - it just smells plain HORRIBLE. But you do get warning before it happens.

Yuppers, this is it! From someone who lives in an area where this is a true harbinger of Spring i can tell you it is VERY real !!

Haha, now y'all have ME scared for myself!

Some of the smells can get a little strong if you are really sensitive. I've had a few allergic reactions due to the smells on rides so I know it can be strong sometimes. You might want to bring along an allergy mask for your D.GM just in case

In figment, the scent room has a VERY strong smell.
In bug's life, there is a scene with stick bugs.
It is sort-of announced.

Ok, so sounds like we should be a bit leery of figment and bugs life. I know she has allergy masks because where she lives is extremely dry and dusty, so I will tell her to bring some along.

In those rides it is a skunk smell. It can be strong in figment, but it is very brief and almost as soon as they spray the smell the ride car moves to a different area.
My son has had a reaction in philiharmagic. During the "Be our Guest" song you can smell some of the foods. That one always causes my son to cough ( he has asthma), but it has not caused him to flare into a full attack.

Good to know, I guess we will just have her put on a mask for those rides. Do you know how long these rides typically last? I don't want her to happen to have a reaction and then be stuck for a long time.

Philharmagic and Bug's Life are shows so you can leave anytime if you need to. Stitch's Great Escape, Dinosaur, and Journey Into Imagination have strong scents too. Spaceship Earth, Soarin', Ellen's Energy Adventure, Kali River Rapids, and Pirates of the Caribbean all have very mild scents, almost unnoticeable really. It's possible to leave Stitch but not the other rides.

Has Stitch changed? When we went (years ago) you were pretty much locked in your seat in the dark. I'm not sure how you could leave.

That scent is HORRID. I'd kind of like the ride if not for that. It took hours to get rid of that smell.

It's possible to push the restraint up a little to slide down and get out. When the restraints are coming down, you can put your hands up and keep it from going to far down. There's a cast member in the room with you who will notice if you are trying to get out and will help you exit. I have the MSDS sheet around here somewhere and I'll tell you, there's no chili dog in there.

Ok, that makes me feel better than we can leave if need be. If the smells are mild she should be fine. She gets embarrassed by her coughing fits, so it's good to know so I can warn her in advance. Thank you! :)

Yikes, definitely one we will skip if that's the case!

There is a scene in Spaceship Earth where the smell of burning is pretty strong. It's no big deal as long as you keep moving but the ride occasionally comes to a stop for several minutes and there is always the possibility that you might be at that location.
