Need everyone's help. We have a smell in the freezer when it is turned on. When its off, it is fine, but once it gets cold, there is a mildew smell. We have tried everything to remove it, but it keeps coming back. Any suggestions?? Thanks!

If you have any "Odor Eaters" in any old shoes you aren't currently using , you might try them, :lmao:

or try a large open box of Arm & Hammer Baking Soda in the freezer for a while.

Since it's in the fridge/freezer, I would try the baking soda. We have a sort of foul smell in one of our cabinets (no clue what it's from). I have tried just about everything to get rid of it. I've got a tupperware container of cat litter in there now. If that doesn't work, I'll try charcoal, then the odor genie by Damp Rid. Very frustrating. :headache:

From a little drywall experience I can take a guess for you on that foul smell. But I'd be willing to bet that a little mouse may have climbed into the wall behind that cabinet and died. I have seen this happen a lot.

Definately open the exterior service panel to the refrigerator compartment & make sure nothing has died in there, or mold, mildew from a leaking refrigerator roof vent.

If you are sure it is coming from inside the fridge, first, if it is an ammonia smell, then the coolant is leaking and is an immediate hazzard and has to be fixed. If not, try putting crumpled up newspaper in the compartments. I had never heard of this before until I loaned a previous motorhome I had to one of my brothers. The MH broke down (under warranty) and was towed to the Ford truck center for repair. They left food, meat, ice cream, etc. in the fridge & freezer where it stayed for two weeks during the summer in Atlanta. Of course it reeked when I went to pick it back up. After cleaning it thoroughly, it still smelled and someone told me about the newspaper trick. I left it in there 2 weeks, changing it once, and no more problem.

FYI, my brother though it would be OK just to let it run on propane (Duh!!) while it was fixed & stored for pickup. I don't let anyone borrow my camper anymore.

Another odor eater is ground coffee beans according to many RVers on RV.net.

You might also wash down the inside of the fridge and freezer with some diluted bleach.

Ammonia smell is much different than mildew. There can also be a yellow stain from leaking ammonia. I know from experience.

Good luck.

either that or the otters put the dead peacocks and dead yellow flies gussie and grandma killed there:rotfl2:
