smartphone battery from ebay - quality or bad for my phone?

wanting to get a spare Eris battery for my Droid. I can't hold a charge all day, and I know I will need another battery to get me through a day at the parks. It is way cheaper on ebay to get a spare than to go in to Verizon. Are these quality batteries or am I risking damage to my phone?

I have gotten phone batteries from Ebay. It wasn't for a smartphone, but for a Verizon phone from LG. The work perfect, and cost me a whole $6 for 2 batteries.
It was a while ago, so I don't remember the seller that I purchased from.

I was able to get a spare battery from Batteries4less dot com. Good service and fast shipping. And - no phone damage that I know of.

I also got an EnV battery that came in the same color as the phone and was a 'double' battery pack - for my daughter's phone. After a week it uses maybe one bar, and we are talking many teen texts in a day. It makes the phone thicker but she doesn't seem to mind.

Edited to add: Batteries for less sell original batteries as well as after market batteries.

I think there is a bit of risk from buying a cheap third party battery like that. Every once in a while you see a news article about someone who's phone exploded and in each of those articles it mentions that they were not using the original battery, but a third party replacement.

Now, that said, I don't think it's a really significant risk, and I've used a third party battery myself.

I am tempted by the price but also concerned. Major price difference. I don't know if its just the verizon (or other co) marketing that drives the price up. I just don't want to damage my phone. No, I have never heard of a phone exploding
