Smart Phones

The only thing I plan to have on it are photos and I am assuming I can easily download those onto my mac. I have my iPod for music already. I'll check into how much more a 32 GB phone will cost.

I had an iPod too, which has basically been sitting in a drawer since I got an iPhone. This is where you get into the law of unintended consequences. You're probably going to find that you will not want to carry two devices around with you, so I'll bet money that at some point you'll sync the phone with iTunes. You'll also realize how great it is to have everything with you when you're on the go, so you'll download things that you're not even really thinking about right now. You'll realize how many apps there are, some that genuinely make life easier, some for fun, and you'll install a bunch of them.

There are a plethora of online buying guides from sites like cnet, etc., so you can do some due diligence on storage before you decide. Many people underestimate what they'll need.

One thing to keep in mind in addition to picking a carrier and type of plan is the storage capacity of the phone. Will you want to have a lot of music on your phone and/or save videos, movies or photos? Since this will probably be your phone for a while (you don't sound like you'll be one to upgrade often - I'm not either), I would not recommend a 16GB phone. It is surprisingly easy to fill up those 16GB (and iOS takes room, so you don't get the full 16GB for storage). I have individual apps that take up 1GB on their own; an audiobook I downloaded from the library was 2GB. I know it costs more, but go with the 32GB.

ETA, no one's really mentioned data usage in detail, so you need to carefully consider how you think you will realistically use the phone and where you'll be when you do. You'll probably be using it more than you might anticipate. If you're home most of the time and will be on wifi, data usage isn't as big a deal (depending on your ISP). If you'll be out and about, giving it to a child to use when you're running errands, using it on a commute, etc., you'll need to factor that in. Streaming video is the big offender.

Completely agree! I had to purchase my iPhone from Apple because the mobile suppliers offered only 16GB.

I knew that I would be using the camera and video; although, not so much music. I especially wanted to have it in time for my trip to WDW in February. We have the memory maker and I didn't really want to lug around a camera for quick shots around the park. I, also, keep an e-book for those boring hanging around waiting for someone moments.

AS far as data, I do have a plan for 300MB/month; however, I have toggled my cell data and weak signal wifi option off. So far, it has worked well. There are plenty of free wifi locations around. So far it has worked well as my account has shown that I have no used any data on my plan since I have purchased the phone.

My daughter has an iphone on T-Mobile. $30 a month for unlimited data and text, 100 talk minutes. Perfect for teenagers.

I use over 100 minutes a month - didn't grow up in the texting craze so have never been big on it. :)

Yes my daughter has a similar plan from Virgin Mobile. Unlimited text and data. 300 minutes of talk that rarely gets used. $33.83 per month.

Well, my first trip to Wal-Mart in YEARS was a fiasco. Just reinforced why I never go there! Website said they had the phone at the location I drove to, got there, they say they don't carry it. Fun, fun! Think I will just order it online and wait for it to arrive on Feb. 3rd. It's more time without a phone but there is no way I will ever go back to a Wal-Mart store again. A complete mess with a long line of people - took me half an hour just to be told they didn't have it.

Anyway, thanks again for the tips everyone and hopefully I'll be getting my phone in February!

That's reason I recommend tracfone so would not have go Wal-Mart. Basically pick tracfone at Family Dollar or Dollar General store.

I have an 8 GB Iphone4. The storage space is a bit of a pain- but I just delete things when I need more room. I used to have an android phone that let me put in a memory card; it makes so much more sense, I could expand the storage as needed.

The Iphone doesn't do anything my Android didn't, and new iphones don't do anything new Android's don't. I won't get an Iphone again. You are paying for the brand.
