My McAfee subscription ran out at the end of January and I did not renew it because we were still getting virus' with it. Instead we are using the free version of AVG Anti-virus.

But now my computer is moving so slow! It takes forever to load a page. I tried to download adware from lavasoft, but the free version isn't really free anymore.

Does anyone have any recommendations or should I just purchase McAfee again even though I dislike it a lot (don't like Norton either!).

Keep in mind this is posted on the budget board because I am looking for free or really cheap, but need something that works.

Thanks.

Did you fully uninstall McAfee?

I use AVG Free and my computer is pretty fast, so I'm wondering if it is something else.

Try Malewarebytes. That is a good free program similar to Adaware.

Do you do other system maintenance things like clearing tmp files, disk cleanup, defragment, clean out the dust and stuff inside?

I had installed the free AVG a couple of weeks ago and I uninstalled it a couple of days after because it slowed my computer down pretty bad. It's fine now. I set all the maintanence to run automatically. I also use Spybot.

If all you have done is add avg then I would definately make sure Mcafee is uninstalled. Having both installed will slow your pc down to a crawl. I would then download and run Malware bytes. You stated you were getting viruses with Mcafee..are they viruses or malware..what is happening to make you think that you have a virus? As previously mentioned you can look at doing a system clean up.
Other free products you could look at.

combofix is a great product to clean a system as well.

Microsoft Security Essentials Microsoft's free antivirus

+1 on Malwarebytes. I use AVG and Malwarebytes on both my computers and all computers I work on for my family. It doesn't bog down like others. I don't use Spybot anymore, it runs very slow.

Go to www.download.com (a Cnet site) and get AVG and MWB. They have tons of other free stuff that have plenty of reviews.

Go into Administrative tools. Defragment your hard drive. Also run free up disk space program. Then go to the Microsoft Website and download Microsoft Security Essentials, then scan your hard drive.

See if that gets rid of some of the problems bogging down your computer.

I'd also go into the 'options' setting of your browser and set the history to only 1 day. The default (in IE at least) is 20.

Agree with the defrag hard drive. How full is it?
