Hugo - 1989. We have a generator but will not stay for anything Cat 3 or higher.

Where I live we get tons of the rain bands and got hit quite hard by both Katrina and Rita but NOTHING compared to real Hurricane stength.

I've lived in two places vulnerable to them. Houston and Destin.

Galveston is only around 60 miles from where I live and we're so past due for a hurricane that it's getting scary waiting for the other shoe to drop. Rita was a BIG wake up call for our area! What a mess!

I was around during Hurricane Alicia, which by the time it arrived in Houston, was only a Cat.2, but I remember it well! That was over 20 years ago and we haven't had one since!

I've made it through whatever hurricanes have skirted over LI.

I was visiting my grandparents in FL when one hit maybe 10 years ago. Nothing too bad, they lost a tree or two.

I happened to visit them again only a few days after Andrew hit. I remember seeing the damage on the west coast. It was disheartening.

And lucky me went on a cruise in 2004 and came back the evening before Charley hit. We had no idea a hurricane was coming. We were staying in the Downtown Disney area but there was nothing to eat at the hotel. Even the vending machines were sold out. So the afternoon of the day Charley hit we tried to get food from any local place. Everything was closed other than a Quiznos (which had a long line), and a steak house. The steak house served us stranded out of towners. We really appreciated what they did. I hope they all got out in time.

Yes...quite a few over the last 10 years or so. Floyd and Isabel were the worst so far.

Good Afternoon, Sandy! 54 responces on the poll- That's great! :)

We live in Florida. Can you say hurricanes galore?!

We moved into our house during Frances. Had just gotten the truck unloaded and the rain began.

Like Froglady we're prepared.

I was in VA for Hugo, NJ for Floyd.

Been through a couple of earthquakes and Nor'easters, and even had a tornado touch down within half a mile a few times.

:confused3

When it's your time it's your time.

But I agree with arminnie, as long as it's not a "Big One" (ie San Francisco, September, 1989) I'll take the seven second earthquake.

No hurricanes here. Years ago (like when I was maybe 12 or so) we had to run from a hurricane in Texas, while on vacation.

I'm about the same. Maybe a Cat 4, mostly because I don't need to worry about storm surge or flooding where I live.

Yes. I went to college 15 or 20 minutes from the beach. One hurricane (one of the big ones, but I can't recall the name) went right on us. We had a hurricane party off campus. Came back to flooded dorms (but not mine) with no power.

I'm a teacher & about 2 or 3 years ago we missed a week of school in September due to a hurricane (oh, what was the name of that one?)

m first was Andrew they have all seemed pretty easy since then. As long as you are prepared (have enough food and water for at least 3-5days) its not so bad. Most of them are smaller categories (1 and 2) of course DH ad I still being in our 20's and have yet to win the lotto rent and so we dont worry about insurance hikes and roofing probelms ;)

Been through hurricanes, typhoons, earthquakes and tornados. Since I've lived in Florida I've been through many hurricanes and tropical storms. Too many to count. Been here 31 years plus another 4 1/2 in college all in the Miami area.

I've lived in Florida my whole life (about 25 years) so I've been through numerous hurricanes. Since we live inland they haven't gotten us as bad as if we lived on the coast. Thankfully our house is on high ground also so no danger of flooding.

Run from many storms - been very fortunate with the 3 biggest Fredrick, Ivan & Katrina - no major damage.

We WILL not stay for 3's or higher - even if not made to leave = don't want the kids to go thru the horrible noise. If we have to we'll start walking days in advance if we have no money (like now we would be up the creek if we needed to get on the road - no cash - or cc)

We live in Louisiana. We got hit by Rita last year. They just did demolition on our house yesterday. We had 2 trees that fell in the house.

I live in what's called HURRICANE CENTRAL! I lived through 5 hurricanes. 4 here in FL and one in Columbia SC...Hurricane Hugo. Also been through Erin, Opal, Ivan, and Dennis....in that order. I'm not moving either. As someone else said, of all the natural disasters...earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tornados, hurricanes...I'll take a hurricane anyday! I've been through ALL of those by the way. The tornado went bye-bye before "hitting" my home, but that was only about 100 yards away! :faint:

Anne - it was the October 18, 1989 (Loma Prieta) 7.1 earthquake I was referring to. I was at the office a little after 5 pm standing in the doorway talking to a co-worker. The walls shook, the lights blinked, and then it was over. Our building had just been retrofitted for earthquakes plus we had incredible backup (Visa) power. I didn't even have a pencil roll off my desk.

I drove home (about six miles) and had two lamps in the floor and no electricity for about 4 hours - they turn it off as a precaution to check for gas leaks. And my home was on landfill in Foster City - but it was engineered landfill not just toss it in stuff like in SF and my building was 1 year old and built to code.

The next day on TV they kept telling everyone to stay at home. It was an incredibly beautiful day and everything was totally normal so I decided that I'd better go to work. I spend the day on the phone all day calling out of state people to tell them I was okay. I'd only lived there 6 months at that time.

Having structures build to withstand an earthquake is key. I'm getting ready to replace all of my windows and doors in New Orleans (on a waiting list) with hurricane resistant ones. I didn't have a problem during Katrina, but why push it. tricia
