I know this issue has been beaten to death on the boards, but I have to vent about it.........again!

We just returned from a 10 day stay at both the Contemporary and OKW. (we are OKW owners).

Question #1 - Why can't people pick up their towels & garbage when they leave the pool area for the day? Do they leave their backyard patios like that at the end of the day?

Question #2 - Why do people leave dirty, wet towels in the bathroom stalls or shower/changing areas of the bathrooms? Do they leave their bathrooms looking that way at home?

I refused to pick up the gross wet towels in the bathrooms, but when someone would leave & not return for more than 30 minutes, you can bet your butt I took those towels & put them in the towel return bin, along with throwing their garbage away. Wasn't hard!!! There were so many people looking for places to sit, it is only common courtesy to clean up after youself & free up the space for someone else.

The most annoying/unbelievable thing though was the family that brought their things to the OKW main pool at about 10 a.m. one morning (I had gotten there at 9:30 a.m.) They put their pool bag on a table & towels on 4 chairs & left. Thought maybe they were going for a snack or in the pool, as it was already hot that day.

An hour went by, then 2 hours & by that time (noon) the pool was getting extremely crowded. Enough already. When I saw a mom with a tray of food walking around & her youngs kids in tow, I told her that this family had obviously gone elsewhere for the day & they should use that table. I put the pool bag on the ground right behind/next to the table.

The family finally came back to the pool at 3:15 & were both shocked & annoyed to see someone else sitting at "their table that they had reserved for the day". They stormed off.

It may have been rude of me to move their things, but it was extremely rude of them to think that they could hold a table for an ENTIRE day while they were off doing something else. Not once did anyone return to that table until 3:15!!!

Just annoys me. People should have the common courtesy & decency to pick up after themselves & be courteous to other guests.

OK - vent over!!!

I would have done the same thing. But I don't think I would have waited as long as you did. I've seen this done at resorts we've been at--the CR and the CSR. And I, too, have removed the items from the table at the CSR when it is obvious the people aren't coming back for hours.

haha.
well in answer to your questions- do they do that at home???
Either NO- but think "hey we're on vaca! I'm PAYING someone else to do my dirty work"
OR- the answer is YES- and it's more of a "I'm not gonna waste my time cleaning up"

It's funny cuz I actually am SUCH a slob (more messy than dirty) at home- but when i'm out- I pick up EVERYTHING- especially at hotels. I ALWAYS feel embarassed that housekeeping will think poorly of me! :-)
In my house- no one sees my mess but me!

It's sad that the golden rule dosen't apply for some people at some places. I think that what you did was alright, it had been a few hours and moving their stuff was not an option.

Now turning it into the lost and found after a few hours might have been a good idea as well.

And honestly, a bag or a cooler left anywhere for a long period of time is a serious security issue. You would have been well within your rights to have contacted the front desk and explained what was going on to them.

I can't believe how often people trash a public area. Simply pick up after yourself. Throw your trash away and pick up the wet towels. My DH laughs because the one thing I love about vacation is NOT having to make the bed and having someone do it for me. But I still put all wet or dirty towels and washcloths in the tub and straighten up in the morning before we leave the room. Just because someone else is cleaning up after you doesn't mean you have to be a slob...and in a public area there's no excuse.

I don't have a problem with putting your stuff down on a chair while you swim, or even leaving it if you leave the pool areas....briefly. If you're going to be gone more than 15 minutes, you should take your stuff with you. I don't balme you for moving the stuff but I can't imagine the scene if they came back while you were in the process of moving it. :headache: I know some will say it's not your stuff, don't touch it but the same people would also be upset to arrive at the pool to find no empty chairs and only a few people in the pool.

Common courtesy seems to be a quality that is sadly beginning to decline.

I have been saying this for years. We have become very selfish. A good majority of people have an "it's all about me" attitude.

Good for you for moving the stuff left at the table. I would have too! I too have a pet peeve when people trash the area and just leave it. Sheesh, I stack my dishes neatly unless there is stuff on them, then I just organize as best as I can, when we leave a resturant. I don't leave them all scattered everywhere.

I agree 100% with everything you said and you were also right to take that families pool bag off that table so that mom and her young kids could sit there and eat.

I normally try to stay out of touchy threads but just a few comments on this one.......I would never ever touch any one else's belongings at a pool area. I understand what they did was try to reserve a spot for themselves for when their park break was on and they were ready to cool off at the pool. I agree 100% this is wrong. That being said, if I knew this to be the situation, I would have let a CM handle it if it bothered me that much, but I wouldn't myself do it. I guess I don't much pay attention to what other people are doing........I just sometimes am oblivious because most times I don't care what others are doing.

lol its funny because I am the ultimate rule follower (always wait in line-never cut anyone, always clean up after myself, never throw my garbage on the ground, and just generally take care of my things so other people dont have to look at them or deal with them). But thats how my family is.. thats how I was raised and I get so irritated when I see people cutting me in line or leaving their garbage around - but I always remind myself, thats probably not how they were brought up so they dont know any better.. kinda calms me down - but still annoying! trust me, I feel your pain :rotfl2:

I'm the same way! I feel that if people cut in front of me at the food court, then they must REAlllyyyy need that sandwhich 60 seconds sooner than if they had waited...or the ride line, if they just can't contain their composure due to the sheer excitement of having to be "next", then I have no right to stop them! lol But seriously, being a rule follower, I don't understand the rudeness of when others do these things, nor will I say anything to them while I am enjoying my vacation.....as long as it is not one of my kids doing it, I prefer to let line jumpers go ahead of me,,,it's just not that important. It reminds me of people who never signal before turning ( in the car) or people who cut me off ( purposely) to get ahead because where they are going is so much more important than where I have to go, then they better rush! I do just LOVE it though when I get to the next red light and wow--guess who is right in front of me waiting to get thru the same light? So instead of driving safely, they potentially can cause an accident to wind up in the same place as if they followed the traffic rules in the first place....

I totally agree! It even says in the paperwork when you check in that you aren't supposed to save chairs at the pools with personal items (I have received that info at the last three Disney resorts I've stayed in, so I assume it must be property wide now). They have probably been getting a lot of complaints about it.

I would have probably done as a previous poster suggested and told a CM about it as a security issue. After all, in this day and age, one never really knows for sure . . . . .

Did you take pictures of them while storming off :rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

Kudo's for you I would have done exactly the same.:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

I agree Melsmice. Along the same lines....stayed at VB last Aug. Their laundry room contains 3 washers and 6-8 dryers. People would throw wash in around 8 am....then go to the beach or pool ALL DAY and leave their things in the washers/dryers. One day, I waited for hours.....cased the laundry room trying to secure one of the three washers. I timed them. One was left unattended for hours (the entire wash cycle is under 45 min). So I removed their clothes leaving a note of apology on top of the pile and placed it on the large folding table in the room. When I came back to remove my wash, the man got very irate with me. I was upset enough by the encounter that I reported it to the CM's. He was done playing at the beach/pool all day and had finally come to put them in the dryer. People can be unbelievably rude..............

I'm still saying it would have been funnier if you would have told a cast member and had them turn it into lost and found. The stuff would have been gone, but at least it would have been safe.

At Gasparilla Grill & Games (SELF service, mind you) at the GF, guests routinely leave their trays of food at the outside tables. As if there are servers and bus boys available to clear their mess?! So, more often than not, another guest has to clear it for them in order to use the tables (which are in limited number there). Rude, inconsiderate behavoir is never acceptable, even if someone is on vacation and feels they are entitled to have others clean up after them. Makes me respect Disney Cast Members that much more. Lord knows what they have to deal with day in and day out.

I, too, would have removed the family's things and used the table.

As for the rest of it, there is more than one way to look at it. If people leave their wet towels around, Disney has to have someone on staff to pick them up. Same with garbage. The more we pick up after ourselves, the fewer people Disney has to hire -- and the more free labor Disney benefits from.

Personally, I don't leave my towels around, etc., but I do see the other side of the issue! Forcing Disney to hire more people isn't necessarily a bad thing, especially in this economy. And, let's not start with the Disney can't afford it silliness. They just laid off a number of excellent and highly-respected executives. But, I certainly don't see the CEO's pay suffering!! Frankly, I'm rather disgusted with the whole thing on the lay-offs. So much so, I'll probably leave my wet towels as well from now on.

And no, I don't work for Disney and don't have any friends or relatives who do.

You are bringing up an entirely different issue.

Someone leaving personal belonging to reserve space, along with leaving dirty towels & garbage when they depart for the day is rude & inconsiderate, even if you think you are doing it to save someone's job, which, IMO, is very short sighted.

I don't understand your post. Why is it short-sighted to leave wet towels and garbage around and thereby save someone's job? Will Disney close down because they have to hire one more minimum-wage worker at each resort to pick up towels? I don't think so. And, that minimum-wage job may mean everything to the employee!
