The other day I read that everyone puts their coat, robe, zip up sweatshirt and etc on with putting their dominant arm (the one with the hand you write and hold a utensil with) in the sleeve first. I read this on Facebook or instagram - I don’t remember with. So, I thought to myself, I definitely put everything on with my right arm first - I never deviate. I then tried to put my robe on with my left arm first and it was very awkward. I could do it, but I had to really think about it, and it wasn’t nearly as quick as when I put my right arm first. So, I’m now curious about all of you. Here’s something about the subject. I narrowed it down to putting on a coat, but the poll is about anything that you would put on like a coat or jacket.

I’m trying to figure out the throw over the shoulder method. How do you hold the coat behind you? Am I over complicating this? I have been known to over complicate things sometimes Anyway…time to tell us which arm first for you. Give us your answer one arm at a time…..


When putting on a coat, robe, zip up sweatshirt and etc., which arm goes in first?

For Me……As I mentioned above, I always do the right arm first, and my right hand is my dominant hand. I use the ONE AT A TIME method for everything I put on.

My husband writes with his left hand but bowls, pitches, golf’s, etc like a righty. He switched back and forth with which arm is first when getting dressed

Right arm first, always, and it gets awkward sometimes because I’ve often got something in that hand - I carry and do practically everything with my right hand. I’m very left-brain dominant and not ambidextrous at all; I have to consciously think about using my left had and I’m pretty clumsy with it.

I vary. I am right dominant but often go left first...especially if I'm putting on (or taking off) something that's a bit more cumbersome (or I'm trying to shield my hair). Easier garments, I seem to favor right first.

I just put on my robe to check.

I started my right arm first, but kind of flipped it to my back and started the left arm when the right was about half way in.

I am right handed.

I am left handed when I write, but kind of ambidextrous when it comes to other things. I think most of the time I do right hand/arm first. A lot of it comes down to whether it is something I learned from a right handed person or a left handed one. My mom was right handed and is the one who taught me to get dressed.

I had to go and try a coat on to check this I do left arm first, one at a time and I'm right handed. Despite being right handed I've realised my left arm is more dominant - only figured this out from how my nail polish chips/wears down!

I do believe I typcially do left arm first, and I am right handed.

I'm ambidextrous, and I put coat/jackets on differently every time. Sometimes jacket in front left hand in sleeve, pull up with right hand, pull across back and insert right arm. Sometimes hold jacket behind back and put both arms in and pull up over shoulders. On occasion, the right arm goes in first, followed by left. Sort depends on which hand I pick up the jacket with, and if arthritis in left arm is acting up.

Later this morning I realized I have a front closure bra, and there I put my left arm in first! I never would have thought that!
