We used to have canned peaches a lot when I was a kid. In heavy syrup. I used to like to drink the syrup. Can't imagine that now. And can't imagine a parent allowing kids to drink that heavy syrup, like a drink.

@Dan Murphy, Any time I get canned fruit now, if I can't find it packed in fruit juice, but instead in heavy syrup, I rinse off the heavy syrup before eating. Tastes much better. :thumbsup2

I never, ever, ever eat canned fruit. I had too much fruit cocktail and sliced peaches and pears as a kid to ever touch them again.

If I can't have fresh, I actually move to no-sugar dried fruits 1st, then frozen fruits, and then freeze-dried.

The only "fruit-like" thing I eat canned is pie filling (like apple/cherry), which really doesn't have much, if any, fruit, so I use tons of fresh fruit with one can of "filling" (vs the normal 2 you need in a recipe) to make easy pies when I have no time...this is rare, but does happen...

As for pineapple in cakes/pies, once you go fresh, you'll never go back. Same for cherries. A pineapple upside down cake with fresh pineapple and cherries is glorious...

The folks here eat pretty much everything. Fresh fruit is preferred, but they'll eat canned if it's what's served. We eat canned pineapple, pears, peaches, fruit cocktail, and mandarins. I also use the pineapple in cooking/baking, as well as buying dark/sour canned cherries for pie.

I don’t buy canned fruit. I sometimes buy cut refrigerated fruit either pre-packed in jars or snack packs, or store cut and packed. Watermelon chunks, mixed fruit, etc.

We like canned fruit particularly pears and oranges but it has become so pricey that I just get fresh fruit now. The one exception is apple sauce which is actually in a jar but I categorize it the same way.

Seems like many of us were raised with canned fruit. Me also. Not much now though. We used to have canned peaches a lot when I was a kid. In heavy syrup. I used to like to drink the syrup. Can't imagine that now. And can't imagine a parent allowing kids to drink that heavy syrup, like a drink. These days I like those little plastic cups of diced peaches, sugar free, no sugar syrup. And I finally am able to open those little peach cups without having the liquid spill out. Marie uses some canned fruit once in a while in recipes.

Never heard of lychees.
Please tell me how you make this happen. :)

I still make a mess whenever I try to open these types.

LOL. My dad worked for a cannery, So of course I grew up with canned fruit and vegetables. I am type 2 diabetic so other than fresh apples, fruit, whether it be fresh, canned or frozen is off limits according to my Doctor. So don't eat canned fruit anymore. We still eat canned peas. They are the only kind of peas my wife will eat.
Wouldn't peas (starch) have much more carbs then berries like blueberries? I'm Type 2 and eat lots of fruits besides bananas. I avoid starchy veggies like peas.

I used to also. Most of the time I set the cup on a hard surface, put my left hand fingers sort of over the entire rim of the cup, gently holding it in place, and with my right hand, slowly, very slowing, break the seal by pulling the tab back (not up). And then slowly pull back the rest of the way. You can also tilt the cup so that the little air bubble inside is by the tab. Slowly open, or even poke a hole with a knife or fork into the top by the bubble area. Drink some of the juice,. Open all the way then.

Enjoy.

We had canned pineapple slices today to go along with Bacon Spam sandwiches.

Doctors instruction sheet on foods for Type 2 Diabetes say you can eat all the veggies you want.
Both peas and blueberries have 21 grams of carbs. However, peas have only 8 grams sugar while blueberries have 15 grams and peas have 8 grams of fiber, to blueberries 3 (and fiber offsets sugar and carbs)
so peas win.
