The current generation of 'cars' are really more spec racing vehicles with the chassis (carbon-fiber tub) & engines made by only a few companies. While the theory is to keep down the cost of racing to allow more low budget teams to participate, it still takes a LOT of sponsorship $$$ to field a car. NASCAR used to be modified passenger cars but not anymore. Now they are all tubular steel frames covered in fiberglass panels to at least resemble the passenger car they are designed after. I doubt there are any parts on the typical NASCAR that can actually be found on a production vehicle.
We say “now” they look like this but honestly it’s been since the mid to late 80s. Probably been since the 70s that any of the car at all is what looks like the showroom model.

No, I get bored watching anything that repetitive. That’s why I don’t watch most sports. If I have insomnia, all I need to do is put something sporty on tv and I’m out like a light.

I used to think it was sooooo boring, but my husband always watched and grew up watching. As a result, I sorta got into it. Once you start paying attention it does get exciting. Haven't paid much attention after having kids and being busy with other stuff, but we will catch it on TV.

Second half of this year's race was much more interesting then the first half. Early on there were accidents/caution flags before the leaders had a chance to lap the slower cars. Watching the cars trying to pass makes for much better racing then when they mostly drive around in single file.

I’m at a convention in Atlanta right now… will definitely be looking in from time to time. Glad it’s not blacked out in Indy proper.

Is Kevin all set for the race this year, Sandy? :car:
Definitely, thanks for asking 🙂
He’s been at the speedway multiple times this month and left yesterday morning for the race. Him and his best friend stay the night so they don’t have to leave at 3am on race day. I haven’t checked in on the race to see how it’s going since he likes to watch the TV coverage when he gets home. I’m good with watching it once, but not twice - LOL!

A little more than half complete now. Lots of strange things so far.

Heck no for me. But my husband has been a few times with his buddies. More power to them. They have fun and I don’t have to deal with all of that stuff. Hahaha! 🏎️

Thread started a few years ago, but the cool weather today was likely a factor in many of the crashes. The driver who crashed before the start of the race might also have found some moisture on the track affecting grip on the tires. I can recall being at the race a number of years ago when it was quite cold and similar things happened. Tires perform better when up to temperature. Carbon fiber brakes also need to be warmed up prior the entering the pits so they work effectively.

(Formula 1 to me is boring as the races are all on road type courses where there are limited opportunities to pass. The mostly race around in single file and the teams with most $$$ tend to win all of the races. Their advertising makes it sounds like huge numbers of people are becoming interested, but still seems like a sport mostly popular in Europe. A few years ago they held F1 at Indy on the road course and some issues with excessive tire wear made the race a huge flop and I don't believe they have ever returned, but believe they are a few other F1 races held in the US.)

I have never really thought about auto racing but interesting almost 83% of us have no interest. I would imagine we represent the gen population fairly well. Not a good sign for auto racing.

My parents and I watched some live on tv, listened some on the xmradio to our late lunch, and caught the end on xm after we were doing our nice lunch. We are watching the Coca=Cola 600 tonight using the laptop I am borrowing from Dad to stream and we will stream on another tv that has apps.

Today we watched the pre race patriotic events, and they were very good. The national anthem was sung excellently!
