Slingbox anyone?

I couldn't see using a slingbox to watch games all the time. Do you have an Xbox, if so the mlb.tv package you can get through them is getting great reviews.

We tried it last year and it we were only able to get some of the games. Hoping this is a better alternative.

had my sling for 4 years now and hate to think not having it. during football season all i do is stream games on my pc while watching a second game on my tv. The ipad app works pretty good too

Glad to hear that yours has worked for four years. I'm worried about it breaking down after the first year.

I may have been confused...

My slingbox came in yesterday and we're setting it up today, but is there anyway to watch a program on our TV at home and not on the computer? For some reason I thought everyone was watching their programs on their TV's at home and not on a computer or app.

I didn't realize he would have to use my computer to hook up to our big screen at home, in order to watch the programs/games from my moms house (where the slingbox will be)

Any suggestions?

It will have to go through the computer one way or another - might work w/o if you have an "internet ready" TV, but I'm not positive. Dad just runs a little cable from his laptop to the TV.

We do have a Smart TV with internet capabilities, so we'll give that a shot. Otherwise i'll have to buy a cable for the computer and just have to live without my computer for a few hours. Thanks!

Can anyone explain the comments that were made about if you are watching remotely then the TV itself is also watching that same show? I didn't think it worked that way, but I haven't looked into it much.

So I couldn't use a Slingbox to watch TV on my iPad while my DH was watching something different on the actual TV? Is that correct?

(and if anyone has any specific info regarding Slingbox & DirectTV, I'd love to hear that too)

You are watching what is actually on the box that the slingplayer is hooked up to. So, if your husband is watching C-Span at home, you are watching C-Span. You can always get a 2nd cable box and hook the slingplayer up to that. This is what we did, we have comcast and the digital converters are no extra charge. I don't have on demand etc on that box, but I don't really use that.

To the PP asking about hooking up the laptop... I use my ipod touch to run slingplayer through a TV. Doesn't tie up the pc.

Correct. Now, if you have 2 DirectTV receivers, you can watch something on TV while he watches something ELSE through the slingbox. But, whatever receiver is hooked to the slingbox will only play what's being played through the slingbox.

Basically, the slingbox isn't set up to allow multiple parties to utilize a single cable/dish box and thus pay only 1 bill. The idea is that you use it when you're not at home. But, of course a lot of folks do like us & use it where only 1 person is gone, and 1 at home. So, you need to have 1 receiver not hooked to the slingbox to make that work.

How do you get it to run thru the TV? I know that you need to purchase the Slingplayer app for $30, but what kind of cable do you run from the ipod to the TV? I have the Apple cable and it works fine for videos that I purchased from iTunes but I can't watch Netflix thru it. I would think that it would be the same with Slingbox?

I have a video out cable I got from amazon a couple of years ago. I have no idea what brand it is. It has the apple dock connect, composite connections to the TV and a USB plus that will also allow you to charge the thing while it is playing. It will display anything on the ipod, including my slingplayer and netflix. I think the netflix application determines whether or not you have this capability, and you have to have a 4th generation touch to support video out on netflix.
