such as business cards, cards, flyers etc...
the one i used to use pre windows xp was printshop but that won't work with xp(it was pretty old) so i need a new one...i have downloaded avery design pro( free) but as far as i can tell i can't crop photos etc with it so it is pretty limited. PSE5 does cards but not business cards and i really need it for the business cards etc since it costs more to get them printed with full color photos on them( plus husband always seems to spill coffee on his entire supply of them so i only make a few at a time:rotfl2:  )

I am totally old school but I created a template for Photoshop where I can add backgrounds, text, etc. I have it set so that I can get 10 business cards per page and I just print them out on the micro-perf business card sheets. It works pretty well. I think there are templates for several different programs such as Word or graphics programs that should be able to do what you need.

Jeff

PAint SHop Pro Photo XI has templates for business cards etc.

one more reason I love that program...

I just used it yesterday to make really cool mailing and return address lables, for wedding pics I was sending to a bride in Canada..

You should get commission on sales of Paint Shop Pro. ;)

I should. I've sold several people on it in person, they had trouble doing something with photo shop I showed them in person how quickly and easily I could do it in paint shop pro, they went home and ordered PSP within 24 hours..

I use Photoshop to make business cards, it's not very difficult. The really easy way is to make a jpg image in a 3-1/2" x 2" format, then pull it into Word or Avery software business card templates.

i'm sure you regret ever posting on my threads since i always ask a million follow up ????s:lmao: but are you saying just make it like a card then basically shrink it to 3.5x2? that would be easy...i think:rotfl:

it's easier to start with the 3-1/2" x 2" that way your proportions will be correct...

with psp I simply choose ...file...new..then a I get a box asking for the dimensions that I want...

I have a newer version of print shop becuase my old one didn't work with my newer computer.
I have Paintshop pro9 and I bought a book about it for photography, but I am about half way through and stuck. I got to the layers sectio nand have no clue what half of it means. I can do basic editing, but anything special is over my head. Do you suggest any books that are better? Mine is by Diane Koers.

first I highly recommend getting PAint shop pro photo XI

it has some major additions over 9,

Starting with 3-1/2" x 2" (300 dpi) is probably best although it could be designed in any multiple like 7 x 4 and then shrunk. Sometimes shrinking an image too far can result in text getting weird, as I recall.

I've been told NOT to get that one ,and that 9 is the best one. I have read that anything over 9 isn't much improvement for the money. Plus until I learn how to use it, it's pretty useless to get any other one. If I get something else, I am going with photoshop, becuase it is used much more widely and I can get help with it more easily. Everytime I ask for help with Paint shop Pro, I get no answer, or not much of an answer. I can do the basics with it, but at this point I would like to learn about layers, but not really sure what I even need to do or what they are for, for the most part.

I'm not sure where you read that,or who told you 9 is the best, but every review I found online before I bought PSP Photo pro XI, stated clearly that it was well worth the money...and better than previous versions..I've had them all from 7 on up, and after using the free trial of XI for one day I bought it..

the blemish remover, teeth whitener, and color changer tools alone make it better than version 9, the new object remover is also great...

the tutorials that come with XI are also very good.

and from everything I've read the learning curve is much easier than photoshop

actually it would make perfect sense to get the new one to learn, rather than learning the old, then having to relearn the new..

the nice thing about it is so many of the actions are fully automated, but you can do things manually once you have more experience

I read alot of reviews on amazon and a few others, but I usualy trust amazon. So far they haven't steered me wrong. Also a couple of photography boards led me in that direction to. Most said that any version uigher than 9 was hard to learn and not worth the money. I ended up now getting photoshop anyways. I will be taking a class that is using that this fall, so it will be easier to undeerstand hopefully.
Alot of the functions you mentioned really aren't ones I use or need to use at this point anyways. I also didn't want to spend a large sum of money having no clue what I was doing. I have learned some and have alot more to learn, but I just had a hard time getting basic questions answered since so many don't use it.
I will be starting from scratch again with photoshop, but hopefully this class will help me tons!

that's interesting, because I also read the reviews on amazom before buying, and they were all positive..???

good luck

I am happy you like the version you have, but you seem to be tryiong to make me look like I am lying or something. I will post some fo the reviews jsut so you can see...Not sure why you are arguing this point? I just said I don't get much help when I ask a question and your reply was to get a newer version. I see you like yours, but I don't want that version....

Do not upgrade if you have an older version, November 21, 2006
By S. Chen "developer/designer" (nyc) - See all my reviews

I've been a loyal PSP (paint shop pro) customer since the 4.x era. I really loved PSP and have used it up to my current version which is 9, or was, until I upgraded to XI. My opinion in a nutshell is: PSP XI is not only a step down, but a whole flight of stairs down from PSP 9. Why? First let me explain what I use PSP for:

- Managing a large image library (over 70,000 images on a NAS)
- Web design artwork / digital imaging for my business
- Vectors, layers, lossless formats
- Tablet work, filters
- Personal photos on the side, with anal attention to contrast, saturation, color balance, etc.

Given why I use PSP, PSP XI is worse than PSP 9 because:

- It takes forever to start the program compared to PSP 9.
- The browser window, which I use extensively, is very slow, unintuitive (at least for a PSP 9 user), and is impossible to use for large folders (> 1000 images) because it takes hours to load all the images.
- The GUI in general is prettier, but a lot of the menus are in different places so it's basically like having to learn a whole new (okay, half new) program all over gain. Plus, the GUI seems to respond slower than with PSP 9. Personally, I'd rather have a fast, simple GUI than a slow, pretty GUI.

Personally, the speed and browser issues killed the program for me, and are the main reasons I've gone back to PSP 9. I admit, I haven't used PSP XI for more than a few weeks, and I suppose if you had the patience, you could get used to the performance of PSP XI as well as learn the new menu placements and such. But I simply don't have the time or patience, given my schedule.

My conclusion is that going from PSP 9 (or 8, which I still use) to PSP XI is like going from a lean, mean, imaging machine to a bells-and-whistles, dressed up package for people with a lot of free time. I'm not saying that it's bad for everyone; I'm just saying it's bad for me, as well as people who share similar concerns and preferences in their software.

Did not pass QA. Buggy and Slow., November 29, 2006
By J. Puckett (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews

I have been a fan of PSP since version 5. For a fraction of the price it does 99% of what Photoshop can do, and the user interface is easier and more intuitive. HOWEVER, this new version is a huge step backwards, and it's a real shame. Whatever enhancements may have been added to the program are irrelevant, as its bugs and _insanely_ slow performance make it essentially un-usable. Basic operations, like opening the browser view, take forever. I've tried it out on two different systems, a Pentium 4 with 1G RAM and an Athlon X2-64 with 2G of RAM, and several times I've seen it completely hang after only a few minutes of use. Stick with PSP 9 or 10 and you will be much happier.

Worst product and support out there !, September 24, 2006
By Michael Silverman "Mike" (United States) - See all my reviews

I have been using Paint Shop Pro products for well over ten years. I started with version 3 and have upgraded through every version up to the current version XI. Jasc software, the original manaufacturer sold out to Corel after version 9. Version 9 was wonderful as every version before it was nearly perfect and sold at a very competative price. At version X, Corel took over from Jasc. I upgraded and was very disapointed in almost every aspect of their new program. Well it's been almost a year now and once version XI was released I purchased it hoping the problems with version X were corrected. Not only were the original flaws and bugs still in the latest version but major new bugs were there as well. The loading and transitioning through various folders to view and work on images have become extremely slow. While you await the program to load and then transition from one folder to another (you can wait up to 2 minutes for this to occur every time) if you click on anything at all, the system can lock up where restarting the program is the only fix. Calling Corel support is useless, they tell you this only happens the first time you start the program and will not happen afterward. THIS IS NOT TRUE. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program at least three times with no improvement at all. I have a new PC that is used mostly for photography and it fast enough to handle any other program out there including video media and other photo software. My PC is not at fault as Corel likes to say each time I call.

Corel, you have lost a long term user of this program and I am quite sure many more will follow suit. You have had almost two years at working with Paint Shop Pro and it is obvious that you can't resolve the bugs you have added to this once very fine program. The current version of Paint Shop Pro is absolute GARBAGE......DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY on this product.

Paint Shop Pro XI Organizer is a major disappointment, May 6, 2007
By Phillip M. Feldman (Santa Barbara, CA) - See all my reviews

The organizer functions in Paint Shop Pro XI are less flexible and less configurable than the earlier Photo Album software, and some of these functions appear to be broken. Here are some of the problems that I encountered:

1. I have a folder with photos named "1.jpg", "2.jpg", ..., "10.jpg". Sort by name causes the organizer to display "10.jpg" before "2.jpg". The old Photo Album software displayed numbered photos in the correct order.

2. It is no longer possible to control thumbnail size.

3. It is no longer possible to generate a slide show in which each photo is displayed for a specified number of seconds before automatically advancing to the next photo in the sequence.

4. When I click on the "Slide Show" button, only the first photo in the current folder is displayed. The "Forward One Slide" button does not work, and one cannot advance to the next photo by pressing the space bar or arrow keys.

5. When one is in the Organizer, one can't open a file for editing by clicking (either single or double click) on the icon.

In short, the organizer aspect of Paint Shop Pro XI looks like a step back, and I therefore see no reason to upgrade.

Very disappointed, October 6, 2006

As a long time Paint Shop Pro user I was excited to see that a new version had appeared. However I consistantly get messages that the program is not responding. Save your money and continue to use your older version. That's what I'm doing except that I already wasted my money on Verison XI.

Terrible Software and support, October 2, 2006
By M. Silverman "Aviation Photographer" (USA) - See all my reviews

Corel has taken a once great photo program and completely trashed it. Since version 9 when Corel bought out Jasc, this program has gone downhill in usability of the program but mostly in total lack of support from their Customer Support. If you encounter any type of problem at all (and there are many), Corel will offer to help you for a per issue fee. If you correspond with anyone at their online support service you are better off talking to a block of wood. Their standard answer is always "it's your PC that is the problem". Funny but I never encounter problems or issues with any of my other photo software packages, or any other software for that matter on my new PC. When I told Corel that my upgraded PSP-XI has slowed down considerably after loading several folders of photos there answer was "well what do you want us to do?" If you have an older version of PSP (9 or before) continue to use it as it was a fabulous and robust program prior to being bought out by Corel. They have lost many good customers and will continue to do so as long as they keep putting out this type of garbage software.

I certainly am not trying to say that you are lying...

you initially quite emphatically stated that you were told NOT to get the new version that 9 was better, last time I checked all caps is yelling....

I simply disagreed with the advice you were given, I read all of the reviews, so no need to take up space here posting them for me...

upon disecting the negative reviews it seems that most negative reviews stem from the menu having changed and people not wanting to take the time to relearn, I myself didn't like some of the changes at first, but after investing the time to play a little, have discovered that the new menu system is indeed better.. not arguin at all, just voicing another opinion for those considering buying the program,

it would be a disservice, to sit idly as people are told it's a bad program, when I feel quite the opposite...

the reviews on amazon are only a small part of the reviews I read, there are a lot of reviews out there by photography magazines etc, that have taken the time to thoroughly check it out, and all the ones I found basically said it's evrey bit as good as photo shop at a fraction of the cost, nd that the learnign curve is easier..

again not arguing at all, just posting a counterpoint, based on my experience I use the programs for hours a day, and again, I have literally convinced several diehard photoshop users to switch after showing them how eay it is to do somethings they were having trouble with...

I have never heard of Caps being yelling. Just emphaszing a point.
Like I said you have your opinion and I have mine, but I really don't think you should try to convert everyone to your way. Some people don't mind, but others do.

Ok, I think everyone has made their points as to why they like certain software and specific versions. I don't think that the version number of software or the amount of positive/negative reviews are pertinent to the original question in the post.

The point is that there are several different software packages that can be used to create business cards. Each has their merits and all of them have their proponents. I think by reading the posts on the Photography Board that it is clear who has experience with which applications and which versions. I would therefore suggest that everyone take a step back before posting any more. And please remember the first rule of scuba diving, "Don't Forget to Breathe".
