We were talking about kids at work today, and one person was talking about how she has so many problems with her kid in school (academics, not behavior). She looked dead at me and said "Well, my friend told me that having teenagers is like the roller coaster you are on when going through cancer!". I just looked at her, bit my tounge, and went back to my work. How anyone can compare ANYTHING to deal with cancer is beyond me!

Stupid beyond words.

Children (even when you are having problems with them) are an unmitigated good and blessing.

Cancer is an illness; nothing good about it.

I'm confused...how does that corrolate?

And I have now heard her analogy 3 times since the original time that she told me! Thank goodness she is done for the day in about 5 minutes. I don't think I can bite my tongue much longer.

Just chiming in with the posters that say, "Huh?" That is the weirdest thing I have ever heard.

Next time she utters that stupid thought offer to trade ...your cancer for her children. Perhaps then she will realize how stupid she sounds.

Having never had either one, I would imagine that the roller coaster in regards to cancer is terrifying; not knowing if you are going to live.
The roller coaster of having teens is probably one of having a desperate need for an aspirin, but NOT wondering if you'll live to see them grow up.

Maybe she is on something. :smokin: :confused3

I second that.

She evidently thought she was being clever if she kept repeating it, but I'm like the others. It doesn't compute.

That is unbelievable. Some people really need to think before they speak. Of course parenting a teenager has its challenges, but to compare it with an illness is purely ridiculous. You’re a much better person than I am to bite your tongue.

Completely clueless. Here's an idea:

I don't find it offensive...I can't be offended by something that doesn't make sense.

Chalk it up to this woman having no clue what she is talking about.

Maybe she was repeating it because she did not mean for it to offend but by the OP's reaction of just walking away she realized she had and wanted to explain further what she had said.

I don't think it was great to compare raising teenagers to cancer but I can see how the person may have seen paralells.

I guess I would have to know the person. We all say stupid things from time to time that we wished we would not have said.

Has this person been suportive and nice to you otherwise? I would have to take that into consideration before I judged the person on the cancer comment.

I think she is meaning that having to deal with teenagers is like having to deal with cancer.

The next time she says it I would ask her, "how so?". It would be interesting to hear her explain that one. How she can compare those 2 very different experiences is mindboggling.

Maybe tell her that raising teenagers would be more comparable to listening her dribble on day after day. ;) :teeth:
