Sleep Study ?

DH has had a few. His first one he stopped breathing 150 times in the first hour, one of those times he didn't breathe for 45 seconds. They told us they were going to do a split study...1/2 the night no CPAP, 1/2 the night with CPAP. After the first hour they put him on CPAP...I think they were afraid he was going to die in their testing center!!!! His pulmonologist, who only does sleep apnea and nothing else, told him it was the worst case she'd ever seen in her whole career.

He had his machine within a few days and uses it every night. We call Darth, for Darth Vader. Darth travels with us too. It would kind of ruin vacation if DH were to die during the night while we were in WDW.

Okay I'm cracking up. I keep telling everyone that the machine sounds just like Darth Vader but everyone that's heard me sleep with it says it's doensn't and if anything it's just like a white noise machine sound. I totally feel vindicated.

I have a friend who calls his Darth too :lmao:

So I did my sleep study on Thursday night, went to the Dr on Friday morning.
Thanks to everyone who gave me advice beforehand, I felt very comfortable going in to the test.
It was Easy Peasey.:thumbsup2

I had to be there at 8:00. The rooms were private rooms, not at all like the labratory with a big picture window where they stand to observe you that I had in mind. :lmao: I had a private bath with a shower and towels also. There was one other patient in the room next door, but I only heard him when the tech was in there talking to him. When i first got there the tech took me into the room and folded back the bed. The bed was comfortable and had nice sheets, pillows, and a big fluffy comforter. He had me lay with a Cpap mask on for a few minutes while he finished up with the other patient, it lets you see how the machine works and regulate your breathing in case they have to wake you up to put one on you. I had no trouble at all breathing with it.
After he finished up with the other patient he came back and had me change into my PJs, while he set up all of the electrobes, and monitors. After I changed he had me sit in a chair to put two straps with electrobes in them on me , one around my upper chest and one around my belly both on the outside of my shirt. Next he attached electrobes, one on my throat, two on my upper chest several all around my hairline and two on my scalp, just above and behind my temple. I had a tube that looks like an oxygen tube
and a heart monitor on my finger. Yes these all have wires on them attached to a little box that hung from the head of the bed, they were plenty long enough that I didn't feel hampered by them at all, could lay on either side or
my back. I didn't have any electrodes on my back, tummy, arms, or legs, and he didn't do any testing. After he got me all hooked up and into bed he left me alone to read, watch tv or sleep. There was nothing interesting on tv so i read a little while then turned off the bedside lamp and went to sleep fairly easily, The room was pretty dark except for the small blue light on the tv and a small red one on the camera. I also had an intercom if I needed anything. The tech had to come in twice during the night to reattach the electrobes on my scalp, I have curly hair and they were not staying well. He came in after two hours and put me on a cpap machine, he said I never went into REM,
said he could have let me sleep all night and I wouldn't have gone into REM.
He woke me up at 5:30 took off all of the electrobes, honestly that was the most uncomfortable part, and that's nothing. I got dressed and was walking out the door before 6:00. Now when i found out they were going to wake me up that early i was thinking "are they crazy?" "I have a sleep disorder, they're gonna wake me up at the crack of dawn and let me drive?" In all honesty, I was WIDE awake when i walked outside. I've never been that awake at 6:00 in the morning, it's amazing what a night of real sleep will do for you. DH commented on my energy level and how it stayed up all day long.
I went home and took a shower to wash the goop put of my hair it was stuck pretty good to my scalp but after I pried it off it washed right away.
I had an early morning appointment with my ENT to get my results. I have severe sleep apnea, my RDI was 55, but my oxygen level was still 90% which means my episodes are short. I got a call today to get my cpap machine on Friday and I can't wait !!
I think it's going to freak out the cats a little bit and it won't be very sexy for my husband but that sure trumps the whole dying in your sleep thing. Most of all I can't wait to feel good when I wake up, I've never been a morning person, now I know why.
Hope this helps anyone about to have a sleep test or thinking about doing one.

This is exactly how I felt the morning of my sleep study. I was walking to my car in a hospital parking lot before sunrise feeling more energized than I had felt in years.

I'd bet big money that Darth Vader had sleep apnea as well.

That's what that attitude was all about !!!!!!
Now we know !

Do you have a CPAP now, and do you feel that way all of the time?

I feel much less apprehensive about scheduling the sleep study now.

Please let us know how you adjust to your CPAP.

I can only imagine what it must feel like to get a good night of sleep.

I bet it won't be as big a deal as you think.:goodvibes You're husband is going to be so glad to not hear you snoring and gasping for breath he will overlook your nose-hose. Not to mention how much happier and energetic you're going to be.:thumbsup2

I had my first sleep study about 3 years ago. My husband bullied me into it. The results were much worse than we thought they'd be. Severe sleep apnea, stopped breathing >70 times a minute. After an hour & a half, they stopped the test and put me on CPAP. I slept like a baby. Best nights' sleep I ever had.:woohoo: Give it time to adjust. It took me a few weeks to stop taking it off,but now if I accidently take it off I wake up enough to know I'm not breathing well and put it back on.

DH has moderate apnea, but due to severe restrictive lung disease the CPAP and BiPAP made his chest hurt so bad he couldn't tolerate it. His oxygen goes down to the low 80s at night, so he uses 2L of oxygen anytime he sleeps or naps. Lucky for us he has two oxygen concentrators, one large one for home use and one small portable one. We take our oxygen and CPAP everywhere we go. We even went on a 6,000 mile cross-country trip in our camper and the CPAP & oxygen went with us. It is so not a big deal.

Yep. I was issued a Resmed CPAP 2 years ago and absolutely swear by it. Since I started using it I've never dozed off during the day like I used to (unless I was partying really hard the night before ;)). Of course, you get accostumed to getting a good night's sleep so the "wow" factor wears off. What's really cool about the CPAP is that your breathing passages always feel clear, even if you have a stuffy nose or a cold. I can't imagine trying to sleep without it.

minkydog and Barboss your comments make me happy.
I can't wait to get that cpap and feel better, and I was worried
about traveling with it, so happy to know that's not an issue.
I hope that when the wow factor wears off I still remember what it used to feel like, plus I wake up with a headache every day hope that goes away.
If DH had been able to strongarm me I'd have been having this test two years ago.

My DW was urging me to get a sleep study for a while (she saw me stop breathing many times while I slept). Being a typical male I keep saying "nah, I don't need it". Then I got a bad cold and was waking up literally suffocating, which convinced me to get help. My sleep measurements were dismal, I was practically a dead man sleeping. SA is nothing to mess with, it can and will kill you.

My CPAP "rig" came with a case which looks like a laptop case. It's easy to travel with. The only accessory I'd recommend is a 15 foot two-prong extension cord to reach any hotel outlet. If you're not issued a humidifier, I'd recommend that as well if you get dry weather.

I sleep on my stomach. Its the only way I can get comfy & fall asleep. All other positions lead to tossing & turning, and I eventually just lay on my stomach & I fall right asleep.

When I do have to sleep on my back, DH tells me I stop breathing.

Can they do a study with all those wires attached if I'm on my stomach? I can tell you right now I won't sleep or stay asleep if I'm on my back. I don't need a study to tell me that. ;)

Yep. I'm a stomach sleeper too. If you stop breathing on your back you really should get a sleep study. Just don't expect to get a great nights sleep--they have you sleep in several different positions, side, back, stomach. So they're waking you up periodically. But it's worth it if you can get the apnea treated.

If you suspect that you have sleep apnea I strongly urge you to get a study done. It truly is an easy test. And sleep apnea is dangerous, I've been reading up on all of the other stuff it can lead to. I'm insisting other menbers of my family have studies done.

I'm sure it depends on where you have it done and who the tech is, once he got me all hooked up he didn't bother me except to reattach electrobes and put the mask on me. Maybe I was just bad enough in my normal side position.
