We are re-doing our guest room/office into a office/craft room since WE live here & could use the space, & guests only visit a couple of times a year. In doing so, my mom is taking the current bed which has an AWESOME mattress.

The space will have room for a sofa which needs to function as a sleeper for guests -- probably my elderly mom more than anyone else really. Having a family of people with bad backs, the sleeper mattress needs to be REALLY GOOD (support / comfort / somewhat firm). We have an air mattress that DH & I use when we visit my parents house, but that is out since I awake with an aching back.

Years ago, we had a sleep sofa & all I remember is feeling a bar in my back while I slept.

Futons (the GOOD thicker mattresses) ---- do you feel that "crack" in the mattress when it's laid flat?

Daybeds ---- are those twin size only?

Any REALLY good sofa beds?

Seems impossible to find any reviews online.

Any help appreciated.

We bought my oldest son a futon for his room when he "outgrew" his bed. He loves it! Says it is more comfortable that his regular bed was. However, if I were buying with my mother in mind, I think I would go with the daybed. My niece has one in her room and it feels like a regular bed. You can buy a mattress with the firmness/softness you want, but still have the sofa-type space when not being used for sleeping.

Don't do a sleep sofa! I've owned three and no matter how much I spent, how good the mattress was or who was sleeping on them, the complaints that it was uncomfortable inevitiably came. Plus, over time, you will find that you 'sink in' when you sit on the sofa. Our last one was dubbed the man eating couch.

Have a futon and have slept on various futons. Very firm, but good choice. I can't sleep on one nightly, but for a week it's okay. If you go this route, spend extra to get the thicker mattress.

We had daybeds (trundle) when I was a kid. I don't think I've ever seen them bigger than twin.

Have you thought of a Murphy Bed? A lot more money, but it hides away when you're not using it. We are putting one in our office, as we will have visitors who need it, but not enough to make the office seem like it's a bedroom.

We did find a great Sofa bed for my grandma. However it did cost $$$$. I never slept on it but it seemed fine for her. She did not have back issues though. Although if it was a temp. stay I would say it might be fine.

My younger dd has a futon. I would not recommend that for an elderly person to sleep on. It would be very low to the ground and it is very, very firm. This is more of a kid/teen bed. Although, maybe you could buy stuff to make it more comfortable? I don't know.

I was on bedrest for many months so we got a Daybed. It is just like a regular twin bed. You can buy a high end mattress for it. We gave it to my MIL and she has it in her guest bedroom now.

I vote for a futon also. As someone mentioned earlier the sofa beds do sink after some time.

I would say a day bed.

As others have mentioned, you can get a really good mattress and they will be better than any sofa bed or futon for someone with back problems (like me).

My day bed also has a "pop-up" trundle thing that can essentially turn my twin size day bed into a king size bed, or two twin size beds. When you don't need the extra "pop-up" part, you just slide it under the day bed. I've had this thing for about 20 years and I still love it! Although, I don't sleep on it much anymore! ;)

say no to the sofa bed, too uncomfortable. go with the daybed with trundle

I second the Day-bed idea with the trundle. You can get very good matresses and I love the idea that it can make a larger bed or 2 single...We use these for when our 2 nieces come over. :thumbsup2

Sleep Comfort makes a great sleeper sofa but it is VERY EXPENSIVE.

Thanks. I think I'll look into daybeds with trundles. The extra bed would be helpful when other people stay over (occasionally) & not be limited to a twin. I really was hoping for full or queen for that reason, but wasn't sure I would have room. Daybed sounds good so far.

I have to go with daybed with a trundle too...we got one for DD's room. The trundle is great for sleep overs and very easily slides under the bed when not in use.

Get an AERO Bed!

Thanks, but we already have one. Had it for close to 7 years maybe. We use it each time we visit my parents house. And it's been borrowed by lots of people. I have a metal rod in my back....and after sleeping on it, I awake with backache. Don't want my elderly mom sleeping on it.

I spent a fortune on my last sleeper sofa and it does not sleep well. I am about to replace it with a futon. I bought a futon for my sunroom and went to a mattress place to buy an upgraded mattress. It feels wonderful.

One way to get around the sleeper sofa problem, is to have a piece of thick plywood cut to the size of the mattress, and put it on the frame. You wouldn't feel the bars and have more support.

We have a futon and realy like it. I have thought about getting some egg-crate foam to put on top. I think my mom thinks the mattress is a little hard.

A daybed with a pop-up trundle can be a great option. Just make sure you have enough room for a king size bed in the room.

We did that to the last one, but we still had the man eating couch problem!

We have three La-Z-Boy sleep sofas and guests claim that they are very comfortable. My cousin was here last week and said she couldn't feel any bar in the back and slept terrific. They have innerspring mattresses about four inches thick. I was skeptical but good reports so far!
