My DH has back issues and we are looking for a new mattress. Family members have a sleep number bed and think it has helped their back issues.

Looking for opinions on the quality, longevity, the good the bad and the ugly

Thanks.

We've had our Sleep Number bed about 10 years. My DH prefers a firmer mattress while I like just the opposite.
We originally bought a Tempurpedic and wound up returning it. It absolutely killed my back. The SN works great for both us. No complaints. When it's time to get a new mattress we'll buy another.

My boyfriend has one and I dislike it. I have L4-L5 disk herniation and IT band syndrome. When I was in the worst of my issues, no matter what I set the bed on, it made symptoms flare even worse; the $300 mattress my parents bought me in college that I had at my apartment was better. The other thing I don't like about it is that if you roll to the middle because the chambers the bed are separate. I wouldn't suggest getting anything other than a king size because of this issue.

I bought one once and returned it. I just could not get comfortable. Yet, two years ago I went on business travel and had one in my hotel room and I liked it. But it could be because it is a step above what you might usually get in a hotel. Anyway, there are definitely different levels of "niceness" with them and I tend to think most people would be comfortable on the top of the line models.

I'm in the mattress business. I personally think they are extremely overpriced and their warranty and service is terrible. They do have really phenomenal showrooms and that's what sells a lot of people on the product. Just my thoughts...
Just for reference, I've been in business for 14 years.

Had one, hated it, returned it. :scared:

I purchased one of their upper level beds, and like PP couldn't get comfortable.

Do you deal with only one brand of mattress in your business or many different ones? Do you have a recommendation?

We've had one for about 10 years, we're happy with it. One extra side benefit is that the bed consists of two individual sections, so if I'm tossing/turning it doesn't disturb DW. :>)

Love it. I have occasional back flare ups and it's great that I can change the setting as needed. My husband would come to bed and I'd never feel it and he's over 350 lbs.

We have never owned a Sleep Number but we did extensive research on the subject because we were seriously considering buying one. The biggest complaint I heard from people (& read in forums like this one) over and over again is that if you start having problems with any of the electronics or mechanics you will regret ever buying it. Trying to get it fixed is a major pain, and it sounds like problems aren't super rare like you would hope. :(

We got rid of our sleep number bed about a year ago after having it for around 10 years. I HATED the thing. We had all sorts of pump issues, leaking issues, and I could never get comfortable on it. We went back to a latex mattress (not memory foam) and now I sleep much better!

I deal was 7 different vendors. I'd be happy to give you my thoughts through PM. I don't want people to think I'm trying to promote through the DIS.

Yep, that's true. They have an incredibly high return rate. Near 20%!

Not sure what the return rate is, but my husband works in the UPS center in the Twin Cities area that handles all their returns. It is at least a semi truck load every single day. :scared1:

Our Sleep Number experience started off great but slowly the issues began. The space between the two mattresses was always annoying, nothing would close the gap. We had some mildew issues between the foam cushion and air baffles due to a finishing process of the foam. Warranty replaced. The pillow topper wore unevenly. It was nothing more than a glorified air mattress. We gave up after 8 years and bought a Simmons Beautyrest Legend Plush. Love it and wish we hadn't suffered so long on the SN. Good luck with your decision. It is one of the hardest decisions to make because it is such A matter of personal preference.

I have only ever slept in one in a hotel and I absolutely hated it. I couldn't seem to get comfortable no matter what setting I put it at. Maybe it would have been better if I had some time to play around with it but for just a couple of nights I was miserable.

We were thinking of buying one, so went to a hotel that had them to try. It was awful! Felt like a cheap air mattress. Since DH likes a hard mattress and I like mine softer, we bought a new copy of the Sears demo mattresses they have, to save space they put two kinds together, one on either side. Worked out great for us!
