My ds will be leaving for Dominican republic for a weeks vacation on Wednesday. verizon wants to charge me $1.99 per minute Even though he is going with another family I still want to speak with him once a day ( he's 19).

When I spoke to verizon the lady mentioned to me about talking to my son via skype will it work if I'm in Ny and he is in DR? He has the newest iPod touch 4 g and I have the last years iPad ( not the newest one).
Any help- suggestions will be helpful:thumbsup2

He will need to have access to a wifi connection for Skype to work on his iTouch, I think. Beyond that, yes, as far as I know, you should have no problem making it work.

There is a Skype app for the Ipod. My wife doesn't have an Ipod she has an Android but she has used Skype on it to call her daughter in England. Worked like a charm. The only thing that is different is that you need a WiFi or 3G connection to use it. If you have skype on your computer the calls would be free, otherwise you have to get a calling plan. Our plan costs $9/month for unlimited calling to landlines (no pc needed) and some cell phones in 50 countries.

Got it figured it out!

if he doesn't have wi fi then no it really isn't feasable because if he uses his 3g on his iphone over there he will incure heavy costs... make certain he knows that if his cell picks up a data network and he tries to use the net over 3g or edge he will pay ALOT but if it's wi fi then it will be fine!

He haS an iPod touch 4 g would there be fees for this?

An ipod touch using WiFi will not incur any charges. An iPHONE on the 3G network will be expensive overseas. We have used Skype on an Ipod touch (relying on wifi) overseas. Worked like a charm.

Hold on. I forgot that one can have 3G network with Ipod touch 4. Does he have this?

Just to claify: if he has the iPod touch WITH 3g here at home, then he should not try and use that overseas. TURN IT OFF (at least, that's what I've been told). Use only WiFi.

When you are in a country where roaming charges will be a problem put your phone in airplane mode then it will only search for WiFi connections.
