Does anyone have a remdy that actually works to De-skunk my smelly puppy? She was skunked lastnight and nothing seems to help! Any advice would be wonderful!

I had a skunk issue, it sprayed outside an open window and the smell was awful. I Googled and read about a product called Odo Ban. It really really helped and it says it is safe to use on pets too. I got it at a local hardware store, but Home Depot and I think Walmart carry it too.

I have used white vinegar and water mixture. Worked, dog just smelled of vinegar instead.

Tomato juice. I kid you not - one of the life lesson my paw paw pounded it into my head. Told me it was the only thing that worked. He was pretty handy with that kind of stuff, so it might be worth it to try. Good luck!

also used this the last time. which really took out the smell.

In the plastic container, combine 1 quart hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda and 1 to 2 teaspoons of liquid soap. Add lukewarm water if needed (for larger dogs). Mix ingredients well. The solution will fizz, as a chemical reaction is occurring. Use immediately - do not store.

This is also what I use for my dog who seems to love the smell of skunk. I get her wet, soap her up with the dish detergent (Dawn seems to work best), pour baking soda all over her, rub it in and pour the peroxide on her and rub/scrub her. The peroxide seems to dry out her so I also put conditioner on her. Afterwards she is a good smelling dog who is allowed back in the house. Sadly, she only smells good until she goes outside and rolls in anything smelly she can find.

Sorry for you and your puppy. Been there and done that with my mom's dog.

Tomato juice worked. the other ideas posted already sound pretty good too.

Good luck! :thumbsup2

Thanks for the great tips guys. I greatly appreciate it. I have a question about the peroxide though. I did read about this treatment online but was afraid it would bleach out her hair. Has this happened to you, while cleaning your dogs?

I did try tomato juice but all that did was make my Maggie smell like a skunky Tomato. lol. I do not recomend it, but it has worked for a bunch of people I know. So who knows.lol.

Peroxide won't bleach the hair, so don't worry! This happened to both my dogs at like 2 am when I was big and pregnant and I needed a rememedy fast!! I took them to
PetsMart first thing in the morning, spent well over $100 and they still stunk. Then I spent about $7 at walmart for the ingredients for the above recipes, and it worked like a charm....just use fresh peroxide! Good luck!

We have used this too. It is OK, better than tomato juice. Really nothing but time truly makes the smell go away, but this helps. 6 months later our dog smelled like skunk every time she got wet!

Our dumb dog got skunked two nights in a row during a heatwave that had our power out for 3 days!

If anyone decides to use tomato juice, just be sure not to let your dog drink any. Even though it is good for us, it is not good for dogs.

A friend of mine used to work as a groomer, and swore by Massengill disposable douche. Said it worked better than anything else at removing the skunky smell.

My dog is a yellow lab, so her hair is already bleached. Plus I am told the tomato juice could stain her hair.

Oh it will.........my yellow lab thought the black and white furry thing would be fun to play with until he got a face full of spray. He did not know what had happened. I tried vinegar/water, baking soda for his mouth........those helped a little, then tried something from the pet store the next day. That did not help......last resort of tomato juice. That made him turn orange, but at least I could stand to be around him. It did not make the smell go away 100%, but at least it was good enough for him to be in the house.

This does work. I have three puppies that cornered a skunk under my deck stairs and all three got sprayed. Good Luck.

Agree with adidas97's remedy. My cat decided to become a more diverse lover of backyard creatures this summer. The smell was horrible. The trick is to really shampoo this mixture into the fur before rinsing it out. Elijah was not a happy camper through the bath but she decided I was all right after a few hours of scathing glares!

My dog was skunked back when I was in high school. My parents called the vet for suggestions as my mom thought Tomato juice was a bit messy. The vet suggested to go the the drug store and buy a feminine douche product. It worked like a charm. I kid you not.
