Skipper Canteen vs. LTT

So I had taken Skipper Canteen completely off of my list due to the kid meal situation but now that it looks like they have a couple of options for picky kids ("classic" mac and cheese and crispy chicken) I'm reconsidering. On my first day there I have a 1pm LTT ADR (an old favorite of mine) but was able to just score a 12:45 at SC for the same day.

Which would you pick? We are planning to have lunch and the menu changes at LTT don't bother me - I likely will have two appetizers + dessert at LTT, and the app menu did not change at LTT... I'd probably do corn fritters and chowder at LTT and at SC I'd either do a couple of apps (the arepas look so good!) but more likely to choose an entree as there are so many that sound good. Kiddo would have either turkey or mac and cheese at LTT. At LTT I'd share the ooey gooey cake with the kiddo, at SC I'd have a kungaloosh and let him get a volcano.

Anyway does anyone who has been to both semi recently have any comments? I have not seen a word about the new kid menu items, is the "crispy chicken" something a chicken loving kid would eat? He is pretty flexible on the mac and cheese he likes too - the other dish would have probably been too spicy and weird flavors with the meat but he likes baked mac and cheese, mac and cheese with "stuff" in it, macaroni with cheese sauce on it at restaurants, stouffers frozen mac and cheese and the boxed stuff. he is really not too fussed about that stuff as molten cheese is for sure one of his major food groups. Since they share a kitchen with LTT, is it likely that the mac and cheese on the kids' meal is exactly the same across both restaurants? If he's happy, I'm happy and I'd love to try this restaurant.

the other thing that gets me is how backed up LTT seems to get... does anyone know of SC has the same problem?

We have been to both- I have to say that my DS (6 & 3) preferred SC over LTT. My picky eater loved the mac n cheese (its similar to Panera in that it is a white cheddar- not yellow/orange). They both shared dumplings for an app and LOVED the volcano!! SC moves fast (but not QS fast), there is a lot to look at, the interactive servers were fun for my sons. LTT is always just meh for me- but the backups can be insane (we have waited there for over an hour before). For food quality and planning purposes- SC would win, hands down.

Oh thanks! Exactly the kind of info I needed. White and creamy is right up his alley! (he will eat orange as well... but the day he discovered alfredo sauce his eyes rolled into the back of his head, lol). LTT is a nostalgic favorite of mine but they still seem to be struggling to get their flow with the AYCTE option now... I think tables are taking longer to turn over and it is causing backups. I'm a bit of a foodie so SC menu looks so good to me, not to mention the theming of it. Everything on the menu looks like something I'd try under the right circumstances (would not do the whole fish with my kid, it would make him gag lol but adults only I would!) the volcano dessert looks amaaaazing, maybe the best kids dessert on property, and I can't believe it is included with the kid meal and I think we get 20% off there for the AP? kiddo has one. so $8 for him (we are paying oop that day of our trip before switching to DDP) is a killer bargain.

My biggest problem will be what to order as everything looks good!

I am a big time foodie- I think you will both enjoy it... fwiw, Easywdw did a nice review about what has changed menu wise at SC. I had the duck noodle soup and my hubby had the char siu pork (both great). I enjoyed both- its really surprising that its so easy to get a reservation there- because its the best food at MK, imo. The volcano will be a hit- and I still get excited about those steamed dumplings. Enjoy!!!!

Oh thanks, I found it! it looks like it was done before classic mac and cheese was added to the kids menu. I showed kiddo the volcano and he is psyched. what's not to love? I am looking forward to giving this place a try.

I will do a dining report :) kiddo is excited for the volcano and mac and cheese now!

Glad you went SC. I've heard both are good, but I'm really interested in SC for the menu (LLT is kind of boring menu wise to me). Please let us know (am curious myself about bringing our small one there).

my son has gotten very into chopped and is always reviewing his food now, lol. I am going to do a dining report including his PoV. Look for it middle of december on the reviews board! there are almost NO comments about the kid options at this place.

Yeah chowder used to be a much more interesting option before I lived in new england. LTT is for nostalgia for me, but those arepas look so good. Nowhere you can touch a meal like that for $9.50 at a QS location either, it would be at least $15-20.

I love that your DS reviews his food. That's awesome!

I've always found LTT to be incredibly bland eating- I've only done the dinner- expect school cafeteria quality sliced turkey, beef, stouffers mac and cheese, easy mash, etc. Plain food, but I also recognize this is just what the doctor ordered for picky types who might be horrified by the flourishes made on a lot of menus.

Skipper Canteen is way more my style- but it will be the picky eaters worst nightmare. They put spicy beef in the mac and cheese, the shrimp has their heads still on it, the fish is served whole with head and eyes staring at you, even the dinner bread is 'spiced', and the steak meal is covered in chimchurri sauce and comes with yucca planks instead of French fries. There is a straight forward Asian pork dish and a steak salad though, which shouldn't be too "out there".

There are some fairly straightforward kids options though- "plain" mac and cheese, but still not like kraft, a steak, crispy chicken, chicken noodle soup. Just read some reviews on yelp and decide if anything might be up your alley- tons of pics and impressions there.

Have they removed the spiced ground beef from skip's mac and cheese? Our son loved it back in June. Too bad.

they did from the kid menu, it is still available from the adult menu but in slightly different form.

I am also excited to read your DR and specifically hear about Skippers! Hoping to try and find a way to add in some new restaurants this trip. Your DS sounds amazing - will be excited to "hear" his opinion as well.

I am not a picky eater but my son is, which is why it was off the table until the addition of the classic mac and cheese. The only reason I'd consider the pork is that I think he'd eat some pork even though it is less adventurous. I'd totally try the lion fish but it would make him gag to see that... ($1 raw oyster night at the local brew pub is tough with him). I'm actually leaning toward the arepas honestly because it seems plenty for lunch with dessert and I love food like that but admittedly it is not very adventurous.

He is a funny little dude. He is very picky but less so than 2 years ago!

I am really happy with the changes to the kids menu at SC too. We had planned both a dinner and lunch at LTT during out trip, but with menu changes once will definitely be enough. We may cancel altogether, as I am not a fan of the overall changes to the platter.

I think the kids menu changes at SC make it an option for us. My DS5 would not have liked anything on the original menu, now I just need to make sure DS11 is okay with it. He is fairly adventurous, so I think we will try it.
