Yes same day only and there is plenty of availability. We got one about 30 minutes before we wanted to eat ; )

Do you get the reservation by calling or going to the restaurant??

I really want to try SC but with little kids I need better control of my time. I already have ADR for my MK day. Would WDW let me get away with the last minute cancellation fee once I get a reservation at SC??

No. You can't cancel an existing ADR at the last minute without incurring the $10/PP penalty. But ADRs for Skippers are easy as long as you are moderately flexible with your times. You can go to the podium in person to make them. But you can also make ADRs online, starting first thing in the morning.

For what it's worth, I have shown up for an ADR at the reserved time and told the host that we were here for our reservation but didn't want to keep it.we weren't charged (at beaches and cream) not sure whether that would work somewhere else.

Last week were were able to use the My Disney Experience App for same day reservations and checking at the podium at the restaurant.

What time in the morning can you make a ressie there? Is it worth it?

W ewalked up to skippers one time and then made an almost I stand adr on the app after bog told us that we would have to wait an hour for a table becuase some one in our o arty got sick and we were now able to fit at a 2 top and didnt need a 4 top. They let us cancel with no fee then San angles inn in epcot let us cancel early because party members got sick

You should be able to do it on your phone. I booked it on the bus while we were traveling from HS to mk for about an hour later. They also had walk up availability.
