I wouldn't go. It's okay, but in a rather bad area of town. It really depends on the ages of your kids, and what you like. We liked it when it was "Marine World" but once Six Flags took over they added quite a few rides which draw the teen crowd. IMO, it's not the best representation of what the No. CA has to offer.

South of the city is Great America in Santa Clara. It is a Paramount Park and is very similar to a Six Flags Park. I don't know the best way - the train might run down there, or there might be a bus.

Also, we went to the Six Flags about 3 years ago. It was Marine World then and we didn't notice it being in a bad area. Granted it didn't seem like a wealthy area, but it didn't seem horrible. I think there might be a ferry from SF to Vallejo.

Our family likes it. I don't consider it a bad area at all. It is right next to I-80 and you don't have to go through any residential areas. Now that six flags has taken over, there are more roller coasters and teen age rides. They still have some shows, such as a whale, dolphin, stunt, and bird shows. They aren't Sea World quality but still fun. The things we really like are: great weather usually...not too cold or hot, more relaxed atmosphere at least compared to Magic Mountain, and overall nicer employees. Not the best theme park, but as I said we like it.

without a car it's going to be a hassle and it's going to take multiple modes of transportation. basicly your options would be-

take the ferry from fisherman's wharf to vallejo-then either a city bus or cab to 6 flags (problem is the last ferry leaving vallejo is early evening on weekdays, later on weekends-but on weekends the first departure time from san francisco is much later in the morning).

take bart from san francisco to plesant hill-then (if it's available) take the bart commuter bus to vallejo transportation hub-and again a city bus or cab to 6 flags.

in all honesty we live localy to it-and we never go, just not a great amusement park-they've added allot of 'thrill' rides to attract the teen crowds but it's still not a huge draw (despite constant promotions for unlimited season passes that run about the same as a single day's admission).

as a heads up-don't do any of the hotel/motel packages in the vallejo area for six flags, the ones that are the closest to the park are next to one of the most crime ridden and dangerous areas in the town, the others are not in very desireable areas either.

depending on when you would be going-you need to check the park website. it's pretty much shut down during the winter months-and with the exception of certain weekend nights during october when the hold 'hallow-scream' the park closes at sunset (and the hallow scream nights you have to pay a second admission price to remain in for the evening).

thanks for all your honest opinions folks, I think we will just give it a miss and try something else.

thanks again

As someone said going without having a car would definitely be a hassle, when I went on my trip to San Fran it took like 40 minutes going up I-80, pretty easy drive.I went because my only free day to hit a park was on a friday and it was open, Paramount's Great America would have been my first choice since it has more coasters but it was closed. The park just changed it's name to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom and based on my visit I suggest you visit it, it's not anything amazing but it's pretty nice, like a mini Sea World combined with a mini Zoo with a couple of decent coasters thrown in.Some say the park is in a bad area, I would say it's not the best area but not anything that would keep you away.Later in my trip I went to Napa valley and got off at the next exit past the park in Vallejo, I would say this next exit looked worse than the one to get off to get to the park.

I think one of the ferry companies has a combo ferry/bus/admission package to Six Flags in Vallejo. I think it around $55 an adult. It leaves from the piers in San Fran, puts you on a bus on the other side of the bay and drops you off at Six Flags.

Good Luck!

Joe

Don't bother without a car. Great America in Santa Clara would be a much easier choice. Or Boardwalk in Santa Cruz. They have commuter train access I believe. Besides there is so much to do in San Francisco that you probably won't miss it.
