Sitting here waiting for news on the storm

If this Tropical Storm turns into a Hurricane and hits down by where I live, my plans for a few days in Sept and the end of Oct at Universal are going to go down the drain! Our schools have built in Hurricane days, one is Sept 29 & another is Oct 27th, they are both Monday's. On Sept 30th we are also off. I had plans on doing a few days in Orlando meeting family and doing Universal that week. If we have to make up any lost time, it will be on those days.... So not only am I worried about damage to my house, my trip plans are going to be destroyed....
I have all my outside things taken inside, all my batteries and water are ready. I only have my windows to board up. I will leave that to the last minute. So far this storm is taking the path of Charley. Charley's eye came in about 15 miles north of my house! I am a little on edge right now.. glued to the news.......

If anyone else remembers Charley, it came up thru the state and did some damage in Orlando as well.... Let's all hope that this is not the case with Fay! I hope all that are in Orlando this week are there to have a great (and safe) trip!!!! I hope all of us Floridians remain safe as well

I remember Charley. If it helps at all, the last thing I saw on the NOAA showed the path hitting land way farther north closer to the panhandle.

I remember Charley too...that was my first year living here. It looks as though the track is moving a little more westerly which is good for us but it's still a lot of guesswork at this point. We'll all know more tomorrow and hopefully the storm will move further west...into the Gulf.

I've only lived here a couple of months so I am nervous about this whole situation. I feel adequately prepared though. I get nervous in storms anyway, pretty much nervous about wind (had a bad experience with a tornado when I was a small child, effected me permanently), so I might need to take some medication along with my dog during this storm.

It's funny that there's hurricane days here. I had never thought about that. I'm from a place where we had snow days.

We'll see in the Morning once it passes through Cuba - the waters above Cuba are what can strengthen the storm.

That's if going through Cuba doesn't break it apart to begin with.

When they are ACTUAL Hurricanes - that's when I start to worry. Wilma scared the crap out of me when she hit cause she took a ton of stuff down at our house including our pool lanai!!! and they claimed Wilma was only a Level 1!!!

When they are ACTUAL Hurricanes - that's when I start to worry. Wilma scared the crap out of me when she hit cause she took a ton of stuff down at our house including our pool lanai!!! and they claimed Wilma was only a Level 1!!!

When Wilma was coming through...I was at HHN that night and the rain started in buckets. We were soaked within minutes.

The path does look as if it is suppose to come in way north of me now, but I still do not trust the paths. Charley was due to come in at Tampa.. yeah, never made it that far.

If it does go up to the bend of Fl, it will stay over warm waters and become stronger than first thought & that makes it worse for the people up that way. I don't want to see this storm hit anyone

Tizzy_Meliss... I know they vere off.. that is what worries me By the time we knew Charley was coming at us, it was too late to evacuate! NOAA had said it took a "jog to the right" when in fact, it turned completly into Charlotte Harbor & hit head on! Our local weather men kept saying they did not agree with what NOAA was stating and felt it was coming at us.. and they were right


Orlando313...yep, Hurricane Days! I grew up with Snow Days. My kids grew up with Hurricane Days We use to have the Hurricane Days built into the calander for the longest time then they stopped them. The year Charley hit we missed nearly 3 weeks of school. We had no days built into the school year then! We were all worried what was going to happen. The state pardoned our County and we did not have to make them up but from that year on, they have been built back in. What blows my mind is that they are in Hurrican Season Last year they had 2 during Hurricane Season, 3 after the season...this year we only have 3 days built in. I think it is because we have had a "inactive hurricane season" last year. Two of our days are still in active hurricane season which is really dumb! If we have to make up the days. we can still have hurricanes and not have any days left to make them up on. While one is in Sept (very active month) one is in Oct, not so active month, but still active! Do you see what I am saying? Where is the logic? That is like having your Snow Days in Jan & Feb... it can still snow the end of Feb...and March.. Oh well, as long as they do not add on to the end of the school year... That is the districts fault for not planning properly!

A Cat 1 can do some damage depending on how the winds hit. Think about it? The minimum wind speed is 74-75 miles per hour, that can blow down quite a bit of things. People do not realize it until it happens to them Charley was a 4 when it came in by me. It got my roof, my garage door and side door, lots of sofit, my water system, the screens on my pool cage (but not my cage ). I had nearly $50,000 worht of damage! I don't want to go thru that again. It hit Aug 13th and my roof did not get repaired until the end of Feb!!! That was how many roof's were ahead of me. Mine was not an emergency since it did not get the black paper and wood. I was not leaking, it only took all my shingles. Most of the roof's near me were completly gone. Nothing was left, they were sitting inside the homes! I was a lucky one ... I still had a home to live in.

I'm supposed to be flying to MCO tomorrow lunch time...until Thursday, when I have to catch a flight from MCO back to the UK...what do you reckon my chances are of a) getting there and b) having a nice time?!

you are right! I forgot about that. While I do have a garage, I stored all outside items in there. When Charley hit, 2 of my 3 cars had to get repaired That was seperate from the house damage too.. This time around, we now have 4 cars and again, no room in the garage for a car..... What got our cars the last time were the sofits from the surrounding homes that were flying all over. They scratched up the cars and one of the windows pretty bad. Lucky for us, we had no trees fall on the. One of our trees did come down, but it didn't get the car...

Well, if the storm doesn't hit, you will have a geat time. By Thursday, everything should be over with. Depending on where an how hard it hit, everything may very well be fine with you leaving. When you fly in tomorrow, you should be fine unless the storm picks up speed. They are saying there should not be any thing near that part of the state until at least mid Tuesday. If you are going to the theme parks, they may very well be empty.. that happens a lot when a storm hits the coastal areas.. the parks tend to be empty and remain open. If the storm moves inland, they may shut them. They usually wait until the last minute for that. Where I live, many evacuate up to Orlando... I am on the coast of SW FL.

The path has changed once again. Several models have it coming in down by me once again. Our news has stated just to face the fact we will get something. They are calling for a voluntary evacuation in Collier County which is the County below me. Seems down here (us and them) they are worried about the storm surge more than the winds. My house is only 7 ft above sea level Our schools start today and they are open. They will decide about tomorrow. I think Orlando may very well escape much of this if it remains a Tropical Storm. There aren't any storm surges up that way...

We're still going to get heavy rain and high winds...supposedly. We'll have to wait and see what happens.

We're in Pinellas and our schools start tomorrow. I doubt they'll close them, though they might on Wednesday. I'll bet anything they close Collier, Lee, and Charlotte tomorrow.
