FLORIDA TODAY Wires
A sinkhole is delaying traffic today on Interstate 75 in the Gainesville area, according WKMG Local 6 in Orlando and its news partners.
Two southbound lanes on I- 75 in northern Alachua County were closed Wednesday to allow crews to fill a sinkhole under the outside travel lane, Florida Department of Transportation officials said.
About one mile of the interstate north of U.S. 441 was affected by the 12-foot wide, 12-foot long sinkhole. Officials said the sinkhole was 3 feet deep, but loose and soft soil was detected down to about 46 feet.
One lane reopened Wednesday afternoon, but road officials expect the outside lane to remain closed for 3-5 days while it hires a contractor to fill the cavity with a mixture of sand and cement.
