Single Rider Lines designated for 2 people?

This is going to sound weird, but we were at Disneyland this past weekend and took advantage of single rider lines. On Smugglers Run and Web Slingers, my son said there was a SRL where people were going as pairs. I think it was just a coincidence, but he said he saw several people in line and being called together. Is this a thing now or do we think it was some anomaly?

I have to think that was an anomaly where it was easier to grab 2 people from the SRL than it was to fish out a duo in the regular line, to fill up a car. I don't think the approach has changed - SRL is for singles, and groups should expect to be split up. Sometimes, you get lucky and ride together!

No this is not a thing, but sometimes they need 2 single riders, and if the next 2 are in the simgle rider line together, they get to ride together. This happens more on rides with an even number in the vehicle. There are lots of parties of 2 and 4 at Disneyland.

This happens to our family on Radiator Springs Racers a lot. We are 4. The CM always wants to split us up 2 in the front, 2 in the back, but we prefer going 3 and 1. They always send 2 single riders to our car, 1 for each row. We have to tell them to get in the back row and they will ride together. It always confuses the single riders.

Then the people that waited in the regular line have a better chance to be pilot.

I've seen several bloggers talk about using buddy passes recently, but it wasn't for those two specific rides you mentioned...it was only for Monsters Inc with Mike and Sulley to the rescue.

Funny enough, if they ever ask for a party of two in the regular line, don't volunteer. You'll be an engineer, speaking from experience! I had only ridden SR a few times in single rider, always an engineer of course, as I usually travel with someone who can't do motion/thrill rides. Well, I FINALLY went on a trip with a friend and was excited at the thought of being pilot/gunner. We were almost at the front and got pulled up as a party of two, and as we were moving up I realized gosh darn it, we're going to be engineers. So I've ridden probably 10 times and never been anything but an engineer to this day

Every other time I've been an engineer, which is really just a distraction. It's not fun. You've got a tedious assignment that detracts from your overall enjoyment of the attraction. They should allow guests to opt out of engineer tasks. That it, they'll ride in the back but they don't have to tend to engineering tasks.

I like this idea. Your role would be passenger, which makes sense in context. I don't know if it's possible to create something called passenger mode, which would disable what the engineer does. There is something called Chewie mode so it's possible to make changes.

There actually is. I've ridden it without engineers. Maybe it's possible to ask to turn off the system.

There actually is. I've ridden it without engineers. Maybe it's possible to ask to turn off the system.

Are there really roles for guests on ROTR or are you folks just getting carried away with the wrong initialism?

I think they meant Smuggler's Run (not ROTR). FYI if you don't hit the button at first to activate your seat, you can become a passenger and not have to do anything if you want to just enjoy the ride. That's what happens if a cabin doesn't have six people - the system knows to not count any seats that were not activated.

If they have 4 people already and the next groups in the regular line are 4 people, 5 people, 3 people. They are just going to grab 2 people from single rider. If you are in the regular line you can ask for the pilot spots just may have to wait a little bit.

Last time I was at SR with a party of 4 and they took 2 people from the SR line together AND assigned them as pilots. Needless to say I was not happy. Every time I have done SR I have been an engineer.

I did single rider on MFSR just to get out of the rain on my last trip to WDW. It went very fast (too fast for that storm!), but the group I got put with let me choose gunner or engineer - not Pilot of course! I do think usually you will get to be engineer. Honestly, I find all of the gmae elements distracting and would rather it didn't have them.

Also, if you sit down and don't press any bttons, the ride will change the position to automatic. I think it precludes getting the best outcome, but you don't have to do the tasks.

I totally understand why in that scenario you would be a little upset/or dissapointed you didn't get the role you wanted. Unfortunately, my March 2020 trip to DL got canceled, so I haven't had a chance to go on RotR yet.

One was a kid but we also had 2 kids in our group of 4. I wasn’t really mad even though I am bringing it up here. Lol. The line wasn’t that long and no one in our group other than me was super excited to be a pilot. It was a little bit of a joke because I am always an engineer if I do SR. Those are the breaks though. You have to let them spread the magic around.
